Lincoln MKS: Flagship sedan gains in power, size and technology
As the reputation of the Lincoln MKS grows in stat-ure, so has the MKS grown architecturally, technologi-cally and muscularly.
Following a mid-gen-eration refreshening, Lin-coln’s flagship sedan, the 2013 MKS, has gained bet-ter handling dynamics, in-creased horsepower, a larg-er and sexier architectural design, improved fuel effi-ciency, additional standard equipment, more refine-ment and new technologies that help drivers reduce ac-cident risks.
Sleeker with more techThe full-size Lincoln MKS
sports an updated, sleeker style for 2013 that still ad-heres to the look of luxury the Ford division began when it acquired Henry M. Leland’s Lincoln company in 1922. Leland had earned a reputation for building quality cars, and with its di-amond logo emblazoned on the grille, Lincoln contin-ues that luxury demeanor today.
The MKS may have been thought of as a re-imag-ined Taurus (with whom it shared a platform), but the new MKS has its own personality and style with luxury-level comfort, qui-etness, performance and technological enhance-ments.
The 2013 model gains a power rear sunshade, THX II certified audio system, 12-way power heated/cooled front bucket seats, and a more powerful and efficient 3.7-liter V-6 engine that
now includes twin inde-pendent variable camshaft timing.
Assembled in Chicago with a unitized steel body, the new MKS is an inch-and-a-half longer than the previous model, at 205.6 inches in length; width is a roomy 3.5 inches wider at 79.4 inches; height remains 61.6 inches and the wheel-base is the same as before at 112.9 inches. Curb weight is 4391 lbs. for the AWD ver-sion, a gain of about 150 pounds.
With a contemporary yet refined new look, ev-ery exterior surface from the A-pillar forward is new, including the grille, HID headlamps, front fas-cia, hood and front fenders. Continuing the new look are fresh 19- and 20-inch aluminum wheels. At the rear, MKS gets a new fascia, LED tail lamps, exhaust tips and a new decklid design that improves access to the trunk.
Power increaseMKS power has been in-
creased by 9 percent as its standard 3.7-liter V-6 en-gine is rated at 304 hp, up from last year’s 274 hors-es. Torque improves to 279 lbs.-ft. from 270 lbs.-ft. At the same time, projected fuel economy increases by 2 mpg on the highway. The 3.7-liter delivers an esti-mated 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway for the front-wheel drive model and 18/26 mpg with the all-wheel-drive model. Its other available
engine, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 AWD develops 365 hp and 350 lbs.-ft. of torque and has received EPA esti-mates of 17/25.
My week of tests in the 3.7-liter model yielded a mixed-use average of 22.8 mpg, and from a perfor-mance perspective my track times of 7.6 seconds for a zero-to-60 mph sprint and 15.9 seconds for a quarter-mile, were just about the same as my times in the model I tested in 2009.
Four years ago, I found MKS to handle a bit too softly. While the ride was smooth and pampering to passengers, the driving ex-perience was unrefined with SUV-like handling. The 2013 MKS offers greater body roll control, responsive steering and solid accelera-tion with less hesitance than with the earlier model. In comfort mode, the suspen-sion levels out road irregu-larities well and stability was the norm, even in many auto-cross maneuvers.
Infotainment and comfort
Inside, the new MKS is elegant with Bridge of Weir leather seating surfaces, high levels of finish and the integration of MyLincoln Touch infotainment.
The main instruments feature a central speedom-eter flanked by two full-color reconfigurable LCD screens. An 8-inch multi-function LCD touch screen dominates the center stack and provides the visual and control interface for the en-tertainment system, phone, navigation and climate con-trol.
Additionally, you get a plethora of technological advancements including SYNC’s voice recognition, My Key, heated and cooled 12-way adjustable front seats, a retractable rear sun shade, multi-contour ad-justable front seats and a heated steering wheel.
With seating for five, MKS was spacious before and the 2013 model follows suit.
Cabin headroom, legroom and shoulder room all re-main the same as before at a comfortable 39.7 inches of front headroom with 38.5 in row two; 41.9 inches of first row leg room with 38.6 for second-seat occupants and 58.6 inches of shoulder room in row one with 57.4 inches in the rear seats.
Cutting-edge safety systems
Safetywise, MKS delivers with Collision warning, new Lane Keeping Alert and new Lane Keeping Aid technolo-gies that help warn drivers of potentially dangerous sit-uations and can help them avoid common accidents, stability and traction con-trol, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain air-bags and antilock brakes. Adaptive cruise control, ac-tive park assist, blind-spot information system and a rearview camera are avail-able as options.
Base priced at $42,870 for the FWD with a 3.7-liter
engine and $44,865 for my test ride with AWD, Lincoln has increased base prices about $5,000 in five years. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost model bases at $49,860. My test MKS was upgraded with the $2800 Equipment Group 101A option for the Blind Spot Information sys-tem, Cross-Taffic Alert, HD Radio, Navigations System, Rear View camera and heat-ed steering wheel; Adaptive Cruise Control and Colli-sion warning added $1295; dual-panel moonroof add-ed $1695 and destination charges added $895. My sticker took off $3000 in in-centives for a price as tested of $48,550.

Behind the Wheel
Pampering Lexus LS is fuss-free sedan by ANN M. JObASSociATed PreSS
After decades of top reli-ability ratings, the Lexus LS 460 remains the quintessen-tial serene, no-fuss, pamper-ing, large, luxury sedan.
In fact, the most recent J.D. Power and Associates De-pendability Study noted the LS had the fewest owner-re-ported problems in the auto industry and ranked above vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW.
Now, for 2013, the LS 460 is available in new F Sport trim with a bolder face, crisper steering and a sus-pension that allows a more dynamic ride.
Among the F Sport-only features: Bolstered, yet lux-urious, leather front seats, Brembo performance brakes, paddle shifters for manually changing gears, aluminum trim inside in place of some wood trim and standard black Alcantara ceiling ma-terial.
Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, is $72,840 for a base, rear-wheel drive, 2013 LS 460 with 386-horsepower V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission.
The lowest-priced 2013 LS with all-wheel drive is $75,785, and the F-Sport has a starting retail price of $82,840 with rear-wheel drive and $85,735 with all-wheel drive.
Note that even F-Sport models have the same 386-horsepower, naturally as-pirated, gasoline V-8 as the base model, and long-wheel-base LS sedans and a hybrid also are available at higher price points.
Competitors include the well-known, large luxury se-dans from Europe.
For example, the rear-wheel drive 2013 Mercedes S550 with 429-horsepower bi-turbo V-8 and seven-speed automatic transmis-sion starts at $95,905, while a 2013 Audi A8 with all-
wheel drive, 420-horse-power, twin-turbocharged V-8 and eight-speed auto-matic transmissions starts at $81,795.
Both the S-Class and A8 are available with more fuel-efficient V-6s, too.
The LS is Lexus’ flagship sedan, but U.S. sales fell 13 percent last year to 8,345.
The reason, obviously, isn’t the car’s quality, which is well known — from its pre-cise, small gaps between out-er sheet metal to the 38-day, 67-step process just to make perfect Shimamoku layers of striped wood as an optional steering wheel design.
Indeed, the details and craftsmanship of the LS can impress many a passenger.
As an example, the ana-log clock on the dashboard has two types of contrasting aluminum and uses GPS to maintain accurate time, no matter the time zone.
Fog lamps aren’t the typical round shape. They’re sub-tle and vertical so as to bet-ter harmonize with the new Lexus spindle grille shape. And, these fog lights are en-ergy-efficient and high-tech light-emitting diode lamps.
There’s even a hand rest on the far right of the cen-ter console, right where the driver needs it, for operating the cursor-mouse control for the sizable, 12.3-inch center display screen.
On first glance, this hand
rest might come across as the stub at the top of a retro car phone. But it’s actually a smart and helpful resting spot to help ensure accurate movement of the cursor-mouse for commands.
This is just one illustration of how the complexity and new technology in the LS are handled thoughtfully in this big sedan, and there’s no stressing to find controls or change settings.
In fact, the LS appears to be one of the best luxury cars to allow the driver to operate the car and gradu-ally learn the features, in contrast to other cars that immediately and frustrat-ingly demand attention and driver tutorials.
It’s true the 4.6-liter, dou-ble overhead cam V-8 in the LS has fewer horses than do the competing V-8s.
But the LS doesn’t feel underpowered, even dur-ing hard acceleration, where strong engine sounds ac-company the smooth rush of 347 or 367 foot-pounds of peak torque coming on.
The different torque rat-ings depend on whether the car is all-wheel drive (lower torque) or rear-wheel drive. Either way, peak torque is reached by a decent 4,100 rpm. Yes, the LS isn’t snort-ing and slamming bodies roughly back in the seats, but the performance feels ample, just the same.
