The Hyundai Elantra was redesigned last year, and in its fifth generation, it con-tinues to build on its theme for 2012 with an increase in fuel economy, better han-dling capabilities and en-hanced comfort.
An award-winning ve-hicle, the 2012 Hyundai El-antra was recognized as a “Best Family Car of 2012” by Parents magazine and Ed-munds.com in their annual list of family vehicles. The recognition stems from El-antra’s styling, fuel-efficient engine, long list of standard safety features and upscale options, for small families on tight budgets. Elantra was judged on performance, interior, exterior and family-friendly features. Addition-ally, Elantra earned a “Top Safety Pick” designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Vehicles.
The new ActiveECO Sys-tem replaces conventional cable and mechanical link-age with fast-responding electronics. The system ac-curately controls air intake and engine torque, improv-ing drivability, response and fuel economy.
Also new for 2012 are standard heated rear seats, a dual-shell horn for im-proved sound, new steering calibration for better on-center feel, optional road-side assistance kit and new color choices: Shimmering White, Midnight Black and Indigo Night.
Revolutionary fluidic sculpture
Elantra’s architecture
e m ploys what Hyundai terms “Fluidic sculpture.” According to the manufac-turer, the term considers the interplay of wind with rigid surfaces to create the illusion of constant motion. Bringing the concept further, Elantra is an evolution of the fluidic design qualities found in So-nata, including flowing lines along the sides. Elantra’s uniqueness is found in its strong undercut feature line starting at the front door, its muscular wheel arches, and a sleek roofline to create an aerodynamic body.
Additionally, Hyundai’s signature hexagonal black chrome front grille and de-tailed swept-back head-lights, along with 17-inch al-loy wheels, bodycolor door handles and mirrors, rear defroster, remote keyless entry system with alarm, daytime running lights, fog lights, dual heated power outside mirrors and power tilt-and-slide sunroof give Elantra a forward-moving and athletic demeanor.
My test Elantra, in Limited trim, had a 2750-lb. curb-weight and measured 178.3 inches in length, 69.9 inch-es in width and 56.5 inches in height, with a minimum ground clearance of 5.5 inch-es on a 106.3-inch wheel-base.
40 mpg on the highwayElantra is powered by its
1.8-liter Nu MPI four-cyl-inder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque. The power plant has an aluminum block with a cast iron cylinder liner, cyl-inder head and crank that result in a block 30 percent lighter than an iron block, shedding more than 74 pounds off the entire engine weight, while still providing comparable strength.
The system, coupled with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts, is rated at 29 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the
highway. My examination in mixed-use driving situa-tions showed an average of 34.1 mpg.
Elantra often handles vaguely, and its quiet ride exhibits some understeer during quick maneuvers, but at its best, there is good on-center feel, which helps for going straight down the road. Good acceleration at speed makes for a wor-thy performer on the in-terstates, but Elantra is not an off-the-line tire smoker and managed only a 9.1-second sprint from zero to 60 mph and a tedious 16.9-second trek over a quarter-mile.
Elantra does successful-ly dispense of road irregu-larities with a MacPherson strut independent front suspension, coil springs, hydraulic twin-tube gas-filled shock absorbers, and 23 mm stabilizer bar, in conjunction with its tor-sion-axle rear suspension with gas-filled, hydraulic
monotube shock absorbers and coil springs.
Sophisticated, and spacious cabin
Inside, Elantra is roomy for front seaters and the cabin is sophisticated with such amenities as a leath-er-wrapped steering wheel, leather gearshift and seating surfaces, heated front and rear seats, six-way adjustable driver’s seat, one-touch up driver’s window, AM/FM/XM Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with six speak-ers and iPod/USB auxiliary input jacks, air conditioning prep package, trip computer, power windows, tilt steering wheel, front two-speed in-termittent wipers, map lights with sunglass holder, dome lamp and cargo area light.
The cabin affords front headroom of 40 inches and 37.1 inches in row two. Front legroom is spacious at 43.6 inches, but cramped at 33.1 inches in the second row, and shoulder room is comfort-able in front and back at 55.9
and 54.8 inches, respectively.Safety matters are attend-
ed to with strong unibody construction, front and rear crumple zones and inter-nal dual beams in rear doors, advanced dual front airbags with occupant classifica-tion system, dual front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-cur-tain airbags, vehicle stabil-ity management, electronic stability control and traction control system, anti-lock braking system with brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, four-wheel disc brakes and tire pressure monitoring system.
The 2012 Hyundai Elan-tra in Base GLS trim starts at $14,918. My test Elantra Limited started at $19,727 and the Technology Package added $1,911 for a navigation system with 7-inch screen,
rearview camera, 360-watt premium audio with ex-ternal amplifier, automatic headlamps, proximity key entry with electronic push-button start and engine im-mobilizer. Destination fees added $775 for a final invoice of $22,413. Dealer add-ons brought the sticker price to $23,470 plus tax and license, but current dealer incentives could lower that down to the invoice price.

Volkswagen’s upscale CC compact sedan is nicely put together with a coupe sil-houette, pretty lines, a taut, refined ride, well-crafted interior and for 2013, seats for five.
In response to dealer and customer feedback, VW re-moved the two rear bucket seats, with console between, and replaced them with a padded and sculpted bench seat that has a resting spot and seat belt for a middle passenger.
It’s the first time since the CC debuted in the in the 2009 model year that the car has the traditional five-seat configuration of other sedans.
Further changes for 2013 include restyled front and rear with standard bi-Xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps that swivel up to 15 degrees as the car goes through corners. The 2013
CC also gets light-emitting diodes for its taillamps and license plate illumination.
The interior is upgrad-ed, too, with new head re-straints that can adjust fore and aft and automatic cli-mate control with humidity sensor that helps keep win-dow glass free of condensa-tion.
Best of all, the CC comes with free scheduled main-tenance for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. This Carefree Maintenance Program is on all new VWs.
CC pricing rises slightly from the 2012 model year. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, for a base 2013 CC Sport is $31,435 with manual trans-mission and $32,535 with dual-clutch automatic. The base CC comes with a 200-horsepower, turbocharged, direct-injection, gasoline four cylinder.
A 280-horsepower gaso-
line V-6 is available on the upper level Executive mod-el that starts at $42,245. It comes with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Note: All-wheel drive is only offered on the V-6-powered CC.
Competitors to the CC include other upscale, front-wheel drive, com-pact sedans with four-cyl-inder engines, such as the 2013 Acura TSX, which has a starting MSRP plus des-tination charge of $31,405 and base, 201-horsepower powerplant.
Meantime, the 2013 Buick Verano sedan has a starting retail price of $23,965 with 180-horsepower, four-cyl-inder engine and automatic transmission. The base four cylinders of the ILX and Ve-rano are not turbocharged. But later in the 2013 model year, the Verano will add a 250-horsepower, turbo four cylinder.
Neither Acura nor Buick includes free scheduled maintenance.
The CC started life as a VW with standout aesthet-
ics, and the distinctive styl-ing continues with the new hood, grille, lights and bum-pers. The sides now have more prominently sculpt-ed lower sills, and the CC looks somewhat low to the ground.
In fact, it is shorter in overall height than the TSX and Verano, and passen-gers set down a bit onto the seats, which means there’s no good way to look over or around taller vehicles.
From the start, VW tout-ed the CC as an affordable “four-door coupe,” and cer-tainly, it’s less pricey than the Mercedes-Benz CLS “four-door coupe” that
starts at more than $70,000 for 2013.
The CC also has a coupe’s kind of doors — frameless.
But Americans bought just 29,502 CCs last calen-dar year.
The test CC, a base mod-el with six-speed manu-al transmission, handled emergency maneuvers as well as day-to-day driving with confidence and com-posure. Highway travel was pleasant, too.
The test car rode with its 15.75-foot-long body well-controlled and tamped down over road bumps.
There was never any wal-lowy or loose feel in the CC motions. And, most road bumps were well-managed below the car, leaving pas-sengers to feel mostly mild vibrations. Only over sus-tained broken pavement did the ride feel busy.
Electric, power-assisted, rack-and-pinion steering has variable speed assist, so steering had a consistent feel. The driver always had a palpable sense that the test CC was well connected to the road.
The CC seemed to slice through air without wind noise. There was a bit of road noise from the 17-inch, all-season tires.
Shoppers may not ex-pect a six-speed manual in a sedan, but it’s in the CC for those who want it. The shifting had a bit of a loose, rubbery feel, and the clutch pedal didn’t take a lot of ef-fort and engaged the clutch quickly.
The test car had some lag at startup, evidently from the turbo, but once the turbo got going, the forceful grunt
pulled the car strongly. Peak torque of 207 foot-pounds in this 3,300-pound car comes on at a low 1,700 rpm.
VW recommends pre-mium gasoline for top per-formance, and the test car’s fuel economy of nearly 24 miles per gallon in 70 per-cent city driving and 30 per-cent highway driving did not impress. Still, with a sizable gas tank capable of holding 18.5 gallons, the test CC had a range of 440 miles.
The CC tank is 18.6 per-cent larger than that of the Verano, which has the same federal government fuel economy rating as the CC with manual — 21/32 mpg.
The CC’s rear-seat leg-room of 37.3 inches is more than what’s measured in the TSX and Verano.
B u t t h e C C ’s s l o p -ing roofline requires some “ducking” to get inside and restricts back-seat head-room. It’s measured at 36.6 inches without a sunroof, which is less than the Vera-no and TSX with sunroof.
By the way, a sunroof is available only on the top CC models that start at $36,180. In comparison, the TSX has a standard moonroof.
The TSX also has stan-dard leather-trimmed seats, while the CC has standard leatherette seat trim in all but the $42,245 Executive model. Other restrictions in CC amenities seem off-put-ting, too. The pricey Execu-tive model is the only one with rearview camera.
Consumer Reports lists CC reliability as below av-erage.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. announced Fri-day it will add a third shift at a vehicle assembly plant in Tennessee, adding more than 800 jobs.
Gov. Bill Haslam made the jobs announcement at an economic development conference. Haslam said it’s the first time the plant will operate on three shifts.
“N issan and Tennes-see have enjoyed a long and successful partnership, and this announcement shows the strength of the company and the market demand for its products,” Haslam said in a statement.
The staffing for the ex-panded work hours bring the total new Nissan jobs in the state to more than 2,000 since the middle of last year. About 5,600 people cur-rently work at the Smyrna plant that first began pro-duction in 1983.
The Smyrna plant makes Nissan’s most popular car, the midsize Altima sedan, among other models. Pro-duction of the all-electric Leaf is set to begin at the plant in December, while as-sembly of the Rogue is set to come to Smyrna next year. That will mark the first time the small SUV is made in the United States.
Nissan Americas Vice Chairman Bill Krueger said the new shift will begin work on Sunday, building the Al-tima, Pathfinder, Maxima and Infiniti JX.
“The third shift plays an important role in Nissan’s plan to make cars where we sell them,” he said. “By 2015, 85 percent of Nissan vehicles
sold in the U.S. will be built here in North America.”
Nissan’s American head-quarters are located in Franklin, just outside Nash-ville. The company also re-cently announced an ex-pansion of its engine plant in Decherd, Tenn., that also makes motors for the Al-tima. Nissan also has a U.S. plant in Canton, Miss.
The Nissan announce-ment is the latest positive news for the automotive sector in Tennessee. General Motors announced in Au-gust that it will add 500 jobs to make its new Ecotek at its Spring Hill plant, which is also slated to begin assem-bling the Chevrolet Equi-nox crossover and two other midsize models that have not yet been named.
Meanwhile, German au-tomaker Volkswagen AG announced in July it would boost production at its C h a t ta n o o ga p l a n t by 30,000 cars next year with the help of about 1,000 new workers added this year.
Nissan introduced an all-new version of the Altima earlier this year, and the midsize car is now the fifth-best selling vehicle in the U.S.
Through September, the company sold 234,040 Al-timas, up almost 17 percent from last year. It also ranks No. 3 on the list of top-sell-ing cars in the U.S., beaten only by the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
Sales of the Leaf electric car haven’t fared as well. Nissan sold 5,212 through September, down almost 28 percent from a year earlier. But sales of the Rogue small SUV are up 20 percent so far this year at nearly 110,000.

AMARILLO, Texas— For an astronaut it’s the moon. For a jockey it’s the Ken-tucky Derby.
For Pampa’s Lonnie Shel-ton — and baseball fans across the nation — the ride of a lifetime is a regal blue 1948 Lincoln Continental two-door hardtop coupe.
“The first time I saw the car,” Shelton said, “I fell in love with it. I bet I stayed there two hours looking at it, sitting in it, asking ques-tions about it. There are several 1948 Lincoln Conti-nentals out there, but none like this one.”
“This one” is the last known car George Her-man Ruth owned before his death Aug. 16, 1948.
Yes, the Babe Ruth.Ruth is the man baseball
fans adored not only for making the home run fa-mous, but for his fun-loving nature. Ruth also reportedly gobbled down numerous hot dogs in the dugout be-fore batting.
Ruth’s home runs trav-eled distances never seen before, and the 60 homers he swatted for the New York Yankees in 1927 stood as the Major League single-season record until Roger Maris topped the mark in 1961 with 61 homers.
When Ruth was asked about holding out for more money than then-President Herbert Hoover, Ruth re-plied: “Well, I had a better year than the president.”
Of course, old Yankee Stadium was called “The House That Ruth Built.”
Ruth retired from baseball in 1935, and to this day the Hall of Famer is considered one of the greatest baseball players ever to put on a uni-form.
Ford Motor Co. presented Ruth a new Lincoln Conti-nental in 1948 as a measure of its appreciation for his tireless devotion to Little Leaguers and baseball.
Before he died of cancer, Ruth spent many of his fi-nal days traveling across the country in his Lincoln, giving speeches and hitting lessons to little leaguers.
“The car has 81,000 miles on it,” Shelton said. “That’s not so many miles now, but back then that was a lot of miles for a car. So The Babe did some traveling. And then after he passed away the car was driven all over to county fairs and all kinds of places.”
Shelton, 61, is semire-tired, and his passions in life include grandchildren, wife, baseball and car-collect-ing. His love of cars mainly reaches out to mint-condi-tion muscle cars from the 1960s and 1970s.
But when Shelton found out The Babe’s last-known owned car was parked in the Texas Museum of Automo-tive History near the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, he had to see the beautifully maintained machine in person.
Shelton first saw Babe’s car three years ago. Recent-ly, he was looking for parts for some of his older cars on the Internet and found a Dallas-area man who had parts in stock.
“We got to talking and he was also the curator for the car museum,” Shelton said.
Once in Dallas to pick up the car parts, Shelton learned the car’s owner was serious about selling.
Shelton jumped at the chance to own a piece of baseball lore. Shelton said he signed a nondisclosure agreement with the man who previously owned the car and is not allowed to di-
vulge his name. Shelton did say the man is a Texan.
Shelton said he has signed information from Ford Mo-tor Co. confirming the car was a gift to Babe Ruth in 1948. Shelton said he also has documentation from Claire Ruth, Babe’s wife, writing about the car. Claire Ruth died in October 1976.
“Buying it had nothing to do with the car,” Shelton said. “It had all to do with the love of baseball. And the history of baseball and that gentleman who was involved with it. There was nobody that rivaled Babe Ruth back then.”
The car is in pristine shape with original interior and car color — “I call it Yankee blue,” Shelton said.
The speedometer reaches 110 miles per hour. The ra-dio works and takes about
15 minutes to warm up glass tubes used in that era. The doors and windows work by hydraulics. The steer-ing wheel is huge by to-day’s standards. The license plates are black and fea-ture the orange words: THE BABE.
Shelton drives the car on special occasions. He trans-ports the Lincoln he calls “The Babe” in a gorgeous trailer with windows.
Shelton didn’t disclose the price he paid for the car about two months ago.
The demand for recent Ruth memorabilia is eye-opening. Last May 20, SCP Auctions in Los Angeles sold a 1920 Ruth Yankees jersey for $4,415,658. A Yankees cap from the 1930s worn by Ruth fetched $537,278 at the same auction, according to the Los Angeles Times.
