Ford Super Duty truck has awesome ‘pull’By ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS

Get ready to retrieve your jaw from the floor. The 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks generate a jaw-dropping 735 foot-pounds of torque — enough to tow more than 20,000 pounds of trail-ers, heavy-duty equipment and the biggest, most impressive fifth-wheel campers around.

This is 85 more foot-pounds than the previous Power Stroke diesel in Ford’s brawniest F-Series trucks.

The revamped-for-2011 heavy-duty Ford pickups also are more refined and have more electron-ics to tailor them to personal tastes than does any competitor. Even Internet connectivity and com-puter workstation capability, com-plete with printer, are available in the Super Duty trucks.

Starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including des-tination charge, for a base, 2011 F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab model is $28,995 with 385-horse-power, gasoline V-8, 8-foot-long bed and two-wheel drive.

An F-250 Super Cab model starts at $31,120 with same engine, two-wheel drive and short bed.

And the biggest F-250 Super Duty, a Crew Cab model with four full-size doors and a spacious back seat, starts at $32,480 with 385-horsepower, gasoline V-8, automatic transmission, short bed and two-wheel drive. But the star of the Super Duty — the 390-horsepower, 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 with the awesome torque — adds another $7,835 to the price.

Major competitors include the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado heavy-duty pickups that have a retail starting price of $28,960 for a 2500 HD with 380-horse-power, gasoline V-8, two-wheel drive and 8-foot-long bed. A 397-horsepower, diesel V-8 adds $7,730 to the base price of a Sil-verado 2500 HD.

Meanwhile, the 2011 Chrysler Ram starts at $31,980 for a 2500 Crew Cab model with 383-horse-power, gasoline V-8, two-wheel drive and short bed. Add a 350-

horsepower diesel powerplant, and the price is $7,615 more.

The test Super Duty, an F-250 Crew Cab with diesel and a long list of options, topped out at more than $55,000 and was ready to haul people and stuff anywhere in high style.

I use “high” because this 6.75-foot-tall truck was so high up from the pavement, the door handles were at chest level. I could barely see the top of the Power Dome hood when I stood next to this truck. Thank good-ness the test truck had running boards at the side doors to help everyone get inside. Otherwise, I would have had to bring a ladder along.

The Power Stroke diesel bur-bled and rumbled at startup with typical diesel sounds. But they didn’t prepare me for how force-fully the truck moved forward when I pressed the accelera-tor. Knowing this truck weighed more than 6,000 pounds, I ex-pected a leisurely pace.

But bristling with more than

700 foot-pounds of torque for the first time, and with all that power available at a low 1,600 rpm, the test truck showed it eas-ily could get up and running, and it wouldn’t be sluggish and slow with a heavy load in tow.

The six-speed, heavy-duty, au-tomatic transmission is new and worked smoothly to manage the power in all conditions — uphill, downhill and on straight roads. There’s no manual transmis-sion, but the automatic includes a manumatic mode where a driv-er can shift through the forward gears.

The Super Duty’s newfound torque comes in the first Power Stroke engine engineered and built completely by Ford. Previ-ous diesels came from Navistar International, but disputes with the company ended the relation-ship.

As I drove the Super Duty, the clatter from the diesel didn’t in-trude as much as expected. Ford revised the packaging and com-ponents of this hard-working,

overhead valve diesel and, in the process, reduced some noise.

For example, the engine now has one sequential turbocharger, not two, and it’s fitted atop the engine. This is an industry first, and with new roller bearings moving the turbo shaft, plus new resonators in the intake and the extra sturdi-ness of the new compacted graph-ite iron block, noise and vibration emanating from the Super Duty diesel is markedly reduced. But it’s still not as quiet as the diesel in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Fuel mileage was a pleasant sur-prise, averaging 18 mpg (I drove two-thirds of the time on city and country roads, the rest on high-ways). The fuel tank holds more than twice what a small car does — 35 gallons, for a potential driv-ing range, at my average mpg, of 630 miles. The federal govern-ment doesn’t provide fuel econo-my numbers for large trucks in this category, so there’s no comparison with government figures.

Passengers riding in the test Su-per Duty truck jiggled on their

seats at times and felt lots of vibra-tion. But everyone had great views out and sat high above traffic.

Seats are redesigned and com-fortable, and there’s nearly 41 inches of headroom in both front and back seats. There’s even more legroom — 42.1 inches in the spa-cious back seat — than up front. But the high walls of the pickup bed can make it difficult to see what’s inside until the tailgate is put down.

Consumer Reports says predict-ed reliability is worse than average.

2010 Range Rover Sport

Luxury SUV has come a long wayLand Rover may have begun as

a safari vehicle 40 years ago, but it has evolved into a trendy, luxury off-road vehicle that seldom sees the off-road; one of those vehicles is the 2010 Range Rover Sport.

The original Range Rover began its conception in the early 1950s, but the project (the Road Rover) hit delays and was mothballed un-til 1966, when designers Spencer King and Gordon Bashford start-ed building a prototype that was completed and tweaked and com-pleted and tweaked again. This was to be a larger, utility version of the Rover. In 1970, the first Range Rover was sent to market with a no-frills interior, vinyl seats and plastic dashboards.

Through the years, Land Rover has become a battle-tested ex-treme vehicle that has added crea-ture comforts, exotic electronics and an aura of affluence.

Now owned by Tata Motors of India as part of the Ford dispersal that included Jaguar, Land Rover is still built in England and it remains a luxurious, upscale SUV with se-rious off-road capabilities, though more than half the machines sold never leave the highway.

The 2010 Range Rover Sport ranks among the top handful in most lists of large luxury sports-utes; this vehicle is equally at home showing off its status, tool-ing around town, quietly covering the miles on the highway, or rug-gedly taking on off-road trails.

Exterior face liftSport’s brawny exterior gets a

facelift this year for a more refined and sculpted look. Its new two-bar cross-hatched grille, contoured lower front, new headlamp and taillamp configurations, modern bumper design help create a more aggressive, less boxy stance.

Inside, a premium environment has been created with up-qual-ity materials, high-tech electron-ics, lavish fit and finish, increased dampening for a quiet ride, more user-friendly controls and a feel-ing of internal craftsmanship.

Also new this year are an all-new V-8 engine mated to an updated six-speed automatic transmis-sion, paddle shifters for the super-charged model and a 360-degree parking assist camera.

Back outside, Sport may carry luxury traits but is hasn’t forsak-en its ruggedness. Its integrated body-frame construction with hydroformed members and ad-vanced high-strength steels, in-cluding boron steel in the A- and B- pillars, make for a safe and sol-id foundation and its outer-body

panels are double-sided zinc-coated steel and aluminum alloy but toughness and lower weight … and as the vehicle tips the scales at 5816 lbs. weight saving is a plus.

With an overall length of 188.3 inches, width of 76.1 inches and height of 71.5 inches on a 108-inch wheelbase, Range Rover Sport provides off-road ground clear-ance of 8.9 inches.

Supercharged giantMy test Sport was supercharged,

creating a power giant from a 5.0-liter V-8 with aluminum-al-loy cylinder heads and block. The sequential direct fuel injection set-up thunders out 510 hp and 461 lbs-ft of torque, allowing for a towing capacity of 7716 lbs. and enough thrust to propel the 3-ton beast from zero to 60mph in 5.9 seconds en route to a 14.5-second quarter-mile.

EPA rated at 13/18 (city/high-way) on premium fuel, a week of mixed-use tests achieved an aver-age of 15.7mpg.

On the highway and on road courses, the bulk is felt. Corner-ing ability is better than average for a vehicle this size, and the ride is quiet and smooth. Off-road, the Range Rover Sport is ready to tackle all obstacles and look good doing it. Enhanced Electronic Air Suspension with automatic load-leveling and multiple modes soften road irregularities and Off-Road and Extended Terrain-sens-ing software and cross-link valv-ing provide confident off-road performance.

Premium interiorInside the Sport seats five with

front headroom of a cramped 38.5 up front and 38.4 in row two; leg room is a comfortable 42.4 inch-es in the first row and 37.6 behind and shoulder room measures 58.7 and 57.6.

It was once a huge red flag: When a car’s odometer would hit 100,000 miles, “it was almost a magic threshold that meant the car was probably worn out,” says Kay Wynter, who runs an auto service center in Fort Myers, Fla., with her husband, Terry.

But thanks to improvements in car design and maintenance, the milestone of 100,000 miles now means something very different.

Although some cars are ready for trade-in at that threshold, many others can travel twice as far without major repairs.

What allows one car to pass the 100,000-mile barrier with few repair bills, while an-other is ready for the junkyard? It’s all about preventive medicine.

“It’s just like when you get to be 70 and ev-eryone tells you the same thing: Exercise, eat right, take care of yourself,” says Lauren Fix, author of “Lauren Fix’s Guide to Loving Your Car” (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2008).

Feeding your car the right things and taking it for regular checkups will make all the dif-ference.

smoothly is probably tucked at the bottom of your glove compartment, under the spare napkins and ketchup packets. It’s the owner’s manual, which most people ignore at their peril.

“There is a schedule in the manual that runs well over 100,000 miles,” says Fix, and it lists when to replace parts likely to be wearing out. The list will vary for different cars, so check yours and follow it.

Newer cars may have the maintenance schedule built into an internal computer. A blinking light or a beep will announce that it’s time to replace certain parts, says autoeduca-tion.com founder Kevin Schappell.

“Things like the water pump and timing belt should be changed before you notice a prob-lem,” Schappell says. Replacing them won’t be hugely expensive, but “if that belt breaks, it can cause internal damage to the engine, or if the water pump fails, you can overheat the engine and warp the cylinder head.”

That’s when things get expensive.“Typically, around 100,000 or 120,000

miles there are some major preventative maintenance things that need to be done,” Schappell says, so it’s a great time to catch up if you’ve been lax until now.

Get fluent about fluidsThe liquids that go into your car (gas, oil,

brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc.) are cru-cial to its survival. To extend the life of your car beyond 100,000 miles, these experts suggest frequent oil changes and fluid checks done at dealerships or full-service auto centers.

The staff at a quick-change lube shop, Fix says, isn’t likely to have extensive training. Of-ten, “they don’t have experience,” she says, “so they’ll top off long-life fluid with non-long-life or they’ll put power-steering fluid where the brake fluid ought to be.”

These mistakes cause damage, but the car owner doesn’t realize it until well after the dis-count oil-change was done.

In choosing oil, Fix advises buying full syn-

thetics. They “actually will lube the engine better. It’s designed for longer life. There are less emissions, so it’s greener. There’s slightly better fuel economy and better performance,” she says. “There are no negatives except it costs a little more.”

Whichever oil you choose, Schappell says, be consistent over time. That way you won’t mix synthetics and blends, which can cause problems.

Gas also matters: Different cars benefit from different types, so check your manual. “For a Honda which runs really hot because of the compression, if it says run premium, then run premium,” Fix says. “But if it says there’s no benefit from premium gas,” you don’t need it.

Find the right shop“Do your research,” says Terry Wynter,

and choose the best people to extend the life of your car. Ask friends and neighbors, and search online for reviews of repair shops.

Once you’ve chosen one, get to know the staff and ask questions. “Consumers are

smarter now than ever before” about their cars, Wynter says, but many still are uncom-fortable asking for details about work that needs to be done.

Sticking with your car’s dealer can be a safe choice, because the staff will be trained to work on your car. But over the life of a high-mileage car, regular maintenance at a dealer-ship can get pricey.

“Rates at an independent shop may be about $40 to $50 an hour,” Schappell says, “but you’re paying probably $60 to $90 an hour at a dealer.”

The cost of repairs can vary widely depend-ing on the brand of car. Parts for some vehi-cles, including exotic cars and some German models, can be hard to get, driving up their cost. That can be a reason to trade in a car just before the 100,000-mile threshold.

At 100,000 miles, Fix says, “it is out of war-ranty and you’ve got to consider that.”

When you do replace parts, there are ways to save money: “A quick oil-change place will charge you $50 for an $18 air filter,” she says, because you’re mainly paying for labor.

But an auto-parts store will charge you only the $18 price tag, she says, and “you can buy it and say, I don’t know how to put this on. They’ll do it as a courtesy.”

The type of miles matterIt may seem surprising, but highway driving

puts less stress on a car that tooling around locally. It requires less quick braking and ac-celeration, and moisture under the hood has a chance to evaporate.

“Cars that do a lot of short trips will require exhaust work a lot sooner than car that travels on the highway a lot,” Schappell says.

Fix agrees: With local driving, “if you sit in rush hour traffic, tow a trailer, idle outside a school, drive on dusty roads, that’s considered severe duty.”

Local driving in colder climates can also cause buildup of ice and snow under the car, which may contain corrosive chemicals. Fix suggests hosing it off on slightly warmer days. She also suggests waxing your car regularly.

Sound like a lot of work to keep a car zoom-ing along past 100,000 miles?

“It’s your second most expensive invest-ment. You want to take care of it,” says Fix.

Sniffers help minimize ‘new car smell’DEE-ANN DURBIN,AP Auto WritEr

DETROIT — When en-gineers were getting Ford’s Transit Connect ready to go on sale in the United States last year, some of them no-ticed an oily, fishy smell in the van.

Ford staff in Turkey, where the Transit Connect is made, were stumped. They hadn’t noticed the smell. But a team of U.S. engineers could smell it, and they went to work stripping down the van’s in-terior until they found the culprit: a sealant used in the doors. Ford has now switched to a new sealant that won’t offend American noses.

In the highly competitive auto industry, no detail can be overlooked. That includes odors.

Ford, Toyota, General Mo-tors and others have trained teams of sniffers who evalu-ate smells, and reject or refor-mulate any unpleasant mate-rials. It’s a daunting task: Car interiors are made of dozens of different odorous materi-als — plastics, foams, rub-bers, carpet, fabric, leather.

“The goal is for you to not smell anything, because dif-ferent people are going to like different things,” said Sandra Edwards, a Ford laboratory engineer who leads a smell-test team at the automaker. “If there’s no scent whatso-ever, everyone’s going to be happy.”

Edwards knows this first-hand. While many people like “new car smell” and even try to replicate it in air freshen-ers, she dislikes it and drives with her windows rolled down until it dissipates.

Smell tests have taken on added importance with the globalization of the car mar-ket: Different cultures have different sensitivities. Ford’s smell panel has international participants to ensure it gets a variety of opinions.

“America has such a sani-tized atmosphere to it, it doesn’t take much for us to pick up on those odors,” Ed-wards said.

Andrea Sterling, an engi-neer and smell panel lead-er for Toyota in the United States, said Americans are more sensitive to “fishy” smells than Japanese, so Jap-anese engineers have been trained to meet American standards for “fishiness.” On the other hand, Japanese testers found the smell from some natural fibers much more offensive than Ameri-cans did.

There’s no smell that Ed-wards can think of that ev-eryone likes. U.S. and Eu-ropean drivers think leather smells luxurious, for exam-ple, but Indian drivers don’t like it.

Smell tests are run when-

ever engineers need to make sure a certain part can be used. At Ford, five testers are picked from a pool in Ed-wards’ department, and they smell samples that have been placed in Mason jars with water or heat, which intensify smells. Testers as-sign numbers to the smells, from one (no smell) to six (strong and disturbing).

Negative tests can force engineers to scrap a part and start over. When Toyota was designing the new Sienna minivan, engineers planned to use a certain foam block as a dampening cushion in the cup holder. But the foam didn’t pass the smell test, so materials engineers worked with design engineers and the supplier to find an alter-native.

Sometimes, automakers or suppliers will try to re-formulate the part to change the odor. In one recent in-stance, Ford’s team deter-mined that some rubber floor mats smelled unpleas-ant. The supplier tried add-ing cinnamon oil to mask the scent. Unfortunately, that was rejected, too.

“It smelled like cinnamon and rubber. It was pretty comical,” Edwards said.

Sterling said many people believe that automakers add something to the car to cre-ate “new car smell.” But it

just comes from chemicals in the materials. Plasticiz-ers, for example, are chemi-cals added to plastic to make it more durable and easier to mold into the dashboard and other shapes. Eventual-ly, the chemicals evaporate and the smell goes away.

“Even the smell of roses comes from the chemicals that the plant releases into the air,” Sterling said. “Just like roses, plastics, adhe-sives and other materi-als have some chemicals in them that are released into the air and are recognized by our noses.”

The Ecology Center, an en-vironmental group in Ann Arbor, Mich., has warned that exposure to the many chemicals in car interi-ors — through touching the seats or steering wheel, for example — may cause health problems. In tests, the center has found bromine, a flame retardant that it says has been linked to thyroid prob-lems and decreased fertility; phlalates, which also have been linked to reproductive problems; and lead.

Toyota has some concern that the chemicals in cars may cause nose and throat irritation, Sterling said.

Currently, there are no U.S. regulations on the chemi-cals that can be in a car’s in-terior air, but the Japanese

Automotive Manufactur-ers Association has set some voluntary guidelines that Toyota follows. Sterling said those guidelines caused the company to switch to some lower-emission products in some cases, such as a resin with 80 percent lower form-aldehyde emissions.

ten Kinley said Ford tests all its materials rigorously and hasn’t found any harmful chemicals.

Mechanicsburg, PA -- (Sept 5) - Sun Motor Cars has announced it will donate $100 to Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg for every auto sold in September. In this “Month of Caring” fundraiser, the Sun dealerships hope to raise $25,000 for the charity.

“We want to do everything we can to help Bethesda Mission’s rescue, redemption and restoration of Harrisburg’s homeless community,” said Dan Sunderland, owner and Vice President of Sun Motor Cars Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and Audi. “Sun Motor Cars has already donated over $11,000 to this cause, and we hope to more than double that figure by the end of September.”

“Nearly 98% of our funding comes from donations,” said Bethesda Mission Executive Director Chuck Wingate. “We are grateful for Sun Motor Cars’ past donations, and for this month-long fundraising effort.”
