  • AUTOMOBILE TRACKING SYSTEM

    By

    NAVIN H. YADAV

  • Introduction: GPS The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.GPS was created and realized by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and was originally run with 24 satellites.

  • Introduction: GPS TrackingAnything can be tracked by the 'GPS Tracker' including vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the asset at regular intervals. The recorded location data can be stored within the tracking unit(Within the GPS device memory), or it may be transmitted to a central location data base using GPRS or GSM.This allows the asset's location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real time or when analyzing the track later, using GPS tracking software.

  • History & ReviewAutomobile Tracking Systems started first for shipping industry.Need for Automobile tracking system arose for following reasonsFinding the position of a stolen vehicle. Receiving alert message if the vehicle deviates from its route. Keeping clients informed about the position of their goods. Efficient inventory management. Driver can easily find the nearest emergency center or device station. Company knows exact position of goods, vehicles, drivers and passengers.Efficient management of fuel and time.

  • History & Review: London BusesLondon Buses Countdown sign

  • History & ReviewLondon was one of the first cities in the world to deploy LED signs at bus stops that indicate the arrival times of the next buses at each equipped stop.

This system, called Countdown, was piloted in 1992 by London Buses on bus Route 18.

In 1993, London Transport conducted a trial of Passenger Information at Bus Stops on Route 18.Ran between central and west London.

  • *ClassificationTypically classified as "passive" and "active/real time".

In "passive" once the vehicle returns to a predetermined point, the device is removed and the data downloaded to a computer for evaluation.

"Active" devices also collect the same information but usually transmit the data in near-real-time via cellular or satellite networks to a computer or data center.

  • *Passive Tracking

  • *Active Tracking

  • Classification (continued..)Initially, Passive Systems were used to track the route of personnel.

Real time tracking systems emerged later with more facilities and less effort required to install and uninstall system periodically.

Active systems were developed that transmit automobiles data dynamically to a server or a data center, generally using auto-update/ auto-upload facility.

  • Scope Exploring GPS Automobile tracking system.

Developing Automatic Automobile Location system using GPS for positioning information and GSM/GPRS for information transmission with following features: Acquisition data from device from time to time Transmission of location data to remote server. Developing a web based software to display all transmitted information to end user along with displaying location of automobile on the map.

  • Architecture of AutomobileTracking System

  • ComponentsMajor constituents of the GPS based tracking are: 1.GPS tracking device(Data terminal)2. GPS tracking server(Network)3. Web Interface (Command centre)

  • 1.GPS tracking deviceThe device fits into the automobile and captures the GPS location information apart from other automobile information at regular intervals to a central server.

This device is capable of working in any GSM network around the world.

In our project to reduse the cost of GPS device we are using an android application, called as GPS Logger which has almost the same featues as the GPS device.

  • GPS Device- Android app

  • Flow graph of GPS hardware

  • Working of GPS DeviceSwitch on the application.Initialize the network.Get GPS data.Try to connect to GPRS.If fails log data in non-volatile memory and waits for fixed time period.Again try to connect to the GPRS.Try to connect to the service providers server using the FTP protocol.Send the GPS data in .txt format to the server as a string.Repeat again after every 5 seconds.

  • 2. GPS tracking serverBase of communication (hardware & software)Related directly to the management phase Responsible for making connection with the GSM modems.

    Fetching the received GPRS packets.

Performing some processing and data management.

  • GPS tracking server (continued..)Collecting the .txt string of data.Storing it into home/GPSLogger Directory.

  • 3. Web InterfaceThe UI determines how one will be able to access information, view automobile data, and elicit important details from it. Security issues.Mechanism needed to authenticate the user The client are needed to be visualized with respect to their positions on the globe at accurate distance.

  • Web Interface (continued..)Allows user to set which user are authorized to monitor their real-time and presence history. Users can manage their own list.Google Maps are used for visualization of position on map.Any number of user at the same time .

  • GUI Interface for GPS Location

  • GUI Interface for Location History

  • GUI Interface for Arrival Time

  • Functionality ProvidedZooming, full extent: This tool is essentially to browse a map and is required in any map browsing.

Marker: Specifying the exact location of the bus on the map.

Measuring distance: This feature measures the distance between two specific points on a map and gives the distance in kilometres.

Refresh: The map auto refreshes after ever 5 seconds with the marker to the new location of the bus.

  • Software Requirements

Operating SystemWindows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8BrowserFirefoxWeb designing softwareHTML/JavaScriptServer side Scripting languagePHP/ MySQLMapping SoftwareGoogle Maps API

  • Issues that were involvedSelecting an appropriate GPS device suitable for our project.

Encoding the GPS device for transmitting the data to our server.

Hosting the server to receive the data.

Hosting the front end for displaying the data.

  • Risks that are involvedAvailability of minimum 3 satellite to plot the automobile.

GPRS connectivity at the transmition and receiving end for continuous flow of data.

    Continuous connectivily of the internet.

Availability of GPS Logger in future too.

Convincing bus autorities about the project.
