Automated Border Control Gates for Europe PROJECT NEWSLETTER 18 (09/2017) ABC4EU was a part of the EAB RESEARCH PROJECTS CONFERENCE (EAB-RPC) 2017 On Monday, 18th of September, our project was presented at the Research projects Conference organized by Eu- ropean Associaon for Biometrics (in cooperaon with Joint Research Center (DG-JRC) of the European Commis- sion, and Fraunhofer IGD). The con- ference is currently the largest event on research funded by the European Union in the area of Biometrics and Identy Management and this year, it was held in Darmstadt, Germany. We would like to thank Daniel Cuesta Cantarero (Indra Sistemas), Laura Betan- zos (PricewaterhouseCoopers), Enrique Cabello (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos), Andre Queimado (Vision-Box) and Mari- ano Marn Zamorano (Ecas) for pre- senng the results, examples and impact of biometrics research of the project. From the presentaon of Laura Betanzos from PricewaterhouseCoopers Spain, we got an insight in the way results were obtained and how the first AB- C4EU proof of concept biometrics were collected at the port of Algeciras (Puer- to de la Bahia de Algeciras) in February 2017, and airports of Madrid (Adolfo Suárez Madrid – Barajas) in December 2017 and Lisbon (Humberto Delgado) in December 2016 and January 2017. The results are presented in the chart below: Figure 1: Demographic results ob- tained in the pilots between De- cember 2016 and January 2017. (Content taken from the presenta- on of Laura Betanzos at EAB 2017) Fingerprint captures and facial image captures were collected through enrol- ment staon analysis, enrolment kiosk analysis, kiosk and two steps ABC anal- ysis, single step ABC analysis and mo- bile device for fingerprint capture. In the terms of success, biometric scores proved that fingerprint score on the single step ABC had a 46% success rate all together and facial image scores var- ied from 72% success rate (doc- chip; single-step ABC) to 100% success rate (doc-chip; kiosk). Obtained results will feed the final version of validaon plans and the final pilot will be arranged, where a wider sample of travellers and wider variety of visas and origins will be included in order to provide more possible scenarios and results. From the area of data protecon and privacy in biometric smart borders, Mariano Marn Zamorano from Ecas highlighted the importance of the legal framework, where regulaons of free movement as well as community and member state data protecon regula- on have to be considered previous to any pilots and evaluaons. In terms of architecture, ABC4EU enables proacvi- ty not reacvity, privacy as a default set - ng which is already embedded into de- sign, end-to-end security (full lifecycle protecon), full funconality, visibility and transparency and at the same me, respect for user privacy. At the same me when previously menoned pilots were performed, the parcipants were also surveyed about their experience and a vast majority responded that they liked the experience and almost every- body thinks it is very easy and conven- ient to use. The final conclusion was that automaon would lead to convenience, accessibility and ease of use, but there is sll place for some improvements – the integraon level of legal principles and social values must be assessed com- pletely in order to successfully complete the evaluaon. The final pilots will be performed in Algeciras (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), and Calafat (Romania) be- tween October 2017 and January 2018.
