10
To improve the rifle durability and corrosion-resistance the barrel bore and chamber are chrome-plated.
The rifle is reloaded automatically due to the energy of the powder gases, escaping from the barrel bore to the gas cylinder during firing and the energy of the recoil spring.
The barrel bore is locked by three locking lugs while the bolt turning around its axis by means of the sliding bolt support.
The trigger and firing mechanism of a hammer type makes it possible to fire a single shot and set the rifle at a safe.
The iron sighting device and an optical sight make it possible to deliver an aimed fire at the ranges of up to 300 m.
The operating principle of the rifle is described below: when the bolt carrier together with the bolt moves forward under the action of recoil spring, the cartridge from the magazine is being sent to the chamber. When the bolt is being turned the barrel bore is locked, the extractor
11
snaps behind the rim of the cartridge-case, the hammer is on the sear hook, the trigger bar is in front of the sear.
When the trigger is pulled, the trigger bar turns the sear, the hammer released by the sear and pushed by its spring, rotates and hits the firing pin, which strikes the cartridge primer causing the fire.
During recoil of the bolt carrier together with the bolt due to the energy of powder gases, the barrel bore gets open, the case leaves the chamber and interacting with the reflector lug ejects from the receiver, the hammer turns about, compresses the trigger bar and gets engaged with sear. When releasing the trigger, the trigger bar moves to the initial position. When the trigger is pressed once again the cycle is repeated.
The rifle has a gas regulator which serves to adjust a portion of the powder gases operating the piston of the bolt carrier. The gas regulator (figure 3) is mounted on the cylindrical side of the gas chamber branch pipe. The lockpin prevents the gas regulator from turning and the gas tube from axial travel.
12
The gas regulator is provided with five fixed positions, four of which correspond to the appropriate openings of the different diameter to expell the gases from the gas chamber. Besides it has an opening which serves to close the exhaust valve port in the gas chamber and to reach the point of maximum recoil speed.

6 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS The rifle design provides functioning safety when using the hunting
cartridges .30-06 Spr. (7,62x63) and its proper operation. IT IS PROHIBITED TO USE HOME-MADE AND SELF-EQUIPPED
CARTRIDGES. To ensure the rifle safety, it is necessary to follow such safety
precautions: - always regard the rifle as if it is loaded; - never level the rifle at human targets or domestic animals; - do not lean upon the rifle; - remember that the firing range is about 3 km long; - having taken the rifle into the hands, make sure that there are no
cartridges in the magazine and in the chamber, for this purpose, detach the magazine, retract the bolt carrier backwards and inspect the magazine and the cartridge-chamber;
14
- prior to loading the rifle, check to see that the barrel bore and the cartridge-chamber are free from strange objects.
- do not open the bolt after misfire till expiration of 5 seconds in the view of the danger of the slow shot.
- to avoid an accidental shot, always keep the rifle with engaged safety device;
- unload the rifle when coming up to a settlement, a halt place, before boarding travel facilities;
- keep the rifle and the cartridges separately from each other in the places which are not accessible for children and other unauthorized persons.
To eliminate any fault arising during firing, proceed as follows: - detach the magazine; - remove faulty cartridge (or) cartridge case from the receiver and
barrel;
15
- retract the bolt carrier to the rear position and visually inspect the barrel bore;
- remove foreign matter from the barrel bore; - perform partial disassembly of the rifle and inspect the parts and
assembly units; - assemble the rifle and check all the parts and assembly units for
proper operation without using live cartridges (is allowed to use dummy cartridges);
- perform check of the rifle functioning during firing, observing the operating rules.
7 PREPARATION AND OPERATION ORDER 7.1 Preparation of the rifle for operation To prepare the rifle for operation, proceed as follows:
16
- wipe dry the bore and the cartridge-chamber, if oiling and scale are available there;
- inspect the optical sight. If soiling would be discovered on the surface of ocular lens and the objective, remove it with a flannel cloth;
- attach the sight to the rifle. For this purpose, turn the mount handle through 180º, so that the handle end is positioned in the direction of ocular. Then fit the optical sight mount on the base lug of the receiver as far as it will go and turn the handle backwards;
- check the tightening of the optical sight mount, rocking the sight with hand in the side direction. If rocking is available, remove the handle latch and replace the handle in one tooth clockwise until the rocking of the sight is removed, after that set the latch;
- check the tightness of the optical sight upright screws; - check the tightness of the forearm and swivel screws and tighten
them up in case of need; - check the tightness of the trigger and firing mechanism screw;
17
-perform lubrication of the magazine friction surfaces. The rifle is prepared for fire. 7.2 The operation order 7.2.1 Engagement and disengagement of the safety lock. 7.2.1.1 Engage the safety lock - move the safety lock to the right into
"Safe" position. The trigger is blocked. 7.2.1.2 Disengage the safety lock – move the safety lock to the left
into "Fire" position. 7.2.2 Loading the rifle and firing: - engage the safety lock; - press the magazine latch, moving downwards and forward detach
the magazine from the rifle; - fill the magazine with cartridges: guide the cartridges by turns under
the magazine rims moving each until it rests upon the rear wall of the magazine;
- attach the loaded magazine to the rifle;
18
- disengage the safety device; - retract the moving parts all the way back and sharply release them; When firing with use of the open sighting device, set it into the
position which corresponds to the firing distance (the position “1” of the sight leaf slide conforms to the distance in 100 m, the position “2” and “3” correspondingly to 200 and 300 m). Take aim, press the trigger.
To fire the next shot, release the trigger and then press it again. When there are no cartridges in the magazine, the moving parts will
remain in the front position. Change the magazine, retract the moving parts all the way back and
release. The rifle is loaded and prepared for firing. During incomplete recoil of the bolt carrier backwards or unstable
reflection of the cartridge case, the gas regulator is mounted in accordance with the increasing positions To set the regulator in the required position, it is necessary to accomplish partial stripping of the rifle. After detachment of
19
the gas tube, it is necessary to shift the regulator by 2-3 mm backwards, turn relative to the axis, having matched the number which determines the position of the regulator with notch on the upper part of the gas chamber, push forward, make sure that the regulator is prevented from turning, set the gas tube having limited the regulator from axial shifting. Assemble the rifle in the reverse order.
7.2.3 Unloading the rifle: - engage the safety lock; - detach the magazine; - disengage the safety lock; - retract the moving parts backwards and extract the cartridge from
the cartridge-chamber; - send on the moving parts into the front position; - press the trigger; - engage the safety lock; - release the magazine from the cartridges;
20
- attach the magazine to the rifle.
8 MAINTENANCE 8.1 Maintenance in Service. 8.1.1 Incomplete disassembling Incomplete disassembling is performed for inspection, cleaning and
lubrication of the rifle after firing. To disassemble the rifle, proceed as follows: 1) make sure the rifle is not loaded. For this purpose, detach the
magazine, disengage the safety lock, retract the moving parts by the carrier handle backwards, inspect the cartridge-chamber. Make sure that there is no cartridge in the cartridge-chamber, send on the moving parts to the front position;
2) detach the mount with optical sight (if it is set on the rifle), for this purpose turn the mount handle of the optical sight through 180˚ counter
21
clockwise, by backward movement (in the direction of the butt) remove the mount from the receiver base;
3) detach the receiver cover and recoil mechanism, for that take the rear part of the cover with the right hand and having depressed the recoil mechanism lug, draw off the cover upwards and by backward movement detach the cover from the rifle then detach the recoil mechanism.
4) detach the bolt carrier together with the bolt. For that, it is necessary to retract the bolt carrier all the way back and by upward movement remove it together with the bolt from the receiver guides;
5) detach the bolt from the bolt carrier. Holding the bolt with bolt carrier in the left hand, with the right hand turn the bolt by the head counter-clockwise until the bolt rhomb disengages from the figured bolt carrier slot. Extract the bolt from the bolt carrier slot;
6) detach the gas tube. For this purpose, it is necessary to press (in the direction from the butt) the pin pen of gas tube by means of the case or without it and turn the pin upwards;
22
7) the rifle stock is removed only in case of extreme need for cleaning and repairs. For this purpose, use a screwdriver to unscrew the sling swivel screw, forearm screw and the screw for fastening the trigger and firing mechanism. Then remove the trigger and firing mechanism lifting it up and drawing it back. Detach the rifle stock;
8) To strip the bolt, proceed as follows (figure 4): a) push out the firing pin lockpin by the drift and extract the firing pin,
bushing and firing pin spring from the bolt channel; b) push out the extractor pin by the drift; c) pressing the extractor hook with the thumb of the right hand and
holding it back with the index finger, evoke the extractor with the spring from the bolt slot.
9) to assemble the bolt, proceed as follows: a) insert the extractor with spring into the bolt slot; b) keeping the bolt in the left hand, put the extractor head part to
some support;
23
1-firing pin; 2-bushing; 3- firing pin spring; 4-bolt; 5- firing pin lockpin; 6-ejector with spring; 7- extractor pin
Figure 4 - Component parts of the bolt
24
c) having pressed the extractor, insert the extractor pin into the hole under the leading lug of the bolt so that the pin recess is faced to the cylindrical part of the bolt;
d) holding back the bolt by the leading lug upwards and with cylindrical part to yourself, insert the firing pin by the large recess to the left, having assembled it beforehand together with the bushing and firing pin spring;
e) insert the firing pin lockpin from the side of the leading lug and move it as far as it will go. Remark - In case of the tight inserting the extractor pin into the hole, it is necessary with the finger of the hand holding the bolt and pressing simultaneously the extractor, press the rear part of the extractor.
When disassembling and assembling the article NEVER APPLY extra forces to avoid the deformation of the parts and assemblies.
25
8.1.2 Cleaning and lubrication Cleaning of the rifle is performed with the help of accessories,
attached to the rifle, after firing immediately not later than six hours after the fire is ceased. If cleaning is not possible, it is necessary to lubricate the barrel bore with cartridge-chamber, the inner part of gas chamber and rod with rifle grease «РЖ» and as far as possible perform cleaning, but not later than 24 hours. In winter, cleaning is performed in the room where the temperature of an ambient air is 20±5°C. Prior to cleaning the rifle indoors, it is necessary the rifle to be get warm to the room temperature. For cleaning the barrel bore and the chamber use the clean soft cloth (rags, tow) free of sand and other hard parts. Cleaning is performed in the following order:
1 Lubricate the barrel bore and the cartridge-chamber by the slush brush moistened in the rifle lubricant “РЖ”, “ВО”, “KPM”.
2 Wipe dry the barrel bore by the scourer with the wiping material wound tight round it.

Lubricate the barrel bore by the slush brush from the side of the muzzle part having moistened the slush brush beforehand in the rifle lubricant (2-3 double cleaning rod strokes at full length of the barrel). Wipe the parts with wiping material beforehand moistened in the rifle lubricant and wrung.
27
3 Repeat the process of lubrication and wiping for 8-10 times up to the total removal of the scale (is tested by inspection of the bore).
4 Cleaning over, lubricate the barrel bore and the cartridge-chamber by clean lubricant “РЖ”, “BO”, “KPM” (see the table 1).
To provide normal operation of the rifle, it is necessary: - to remove in time the scale from the gas chamber, gas tube and
gas piston of the bolt carrier; - to check periodically the tightening of the swivel screws, forearm
and the trigger and firing mechanism body and when releasing tighten them up in proper time.
Perform lubrication depending on the temperature conditions according to the table №1. It is inadmissible getting thick of the lubricant in the bolt hole under the firing pin, in the socket under the extractor and on the mainspring.
8.2 Zeroing the rifle with use of the open sighting device. When it is necessary, the adjustment of firing precision is performed
28
by travel of the foresight bracket or windage slide (if shifting of the windage slide is stipulated by the design) to the right-and-left and by rotation of the foresight up-and-down.
For “Vepr-Hunter”: when the foresight bracket travels by 1 mm or windage slide at division “1”, the mean point of impact shifts by 300 mm. One full turn of the foresight moves the mean point of impact by 250 mm.
For “Vepr-Hunter M”: when the foresight bracket travels by 1 mm or windage slide at division “1”, the mean point of impact shifts by 200 mm. One full turn of the foresight moves the mean point of impact by 150 mm.
Fire for adjustment is performed at the ranges of up to 100 m. 8.3 Zeroing the rifle with use of the optical sight. The optical sight is zeroed by firing at a range of 100m, the drum
scales are set at division “0”. In case of unsatisfactory results, it is necessary to zero the optical sight again with use of the open sighting device, for which purpose:
29
1) set the slide of the open sighting device at division “1” of the sight leaf;
2) put the rifle on the rest and lay it with use of the open sighting device at the target, which is at the distance of 100 m;
3) check the position of the optical sight sighting sign relative to the aiming point, if they do not coincide it is necessary to match them by rotation of knobs not shifting, in doing so the rifle;
4) check the laying of sights by firing. If the deviation of hits from the aiming point is unsatisfactory, bring the corrections by rotation of knobs (one large division of knob scales should correspond 1 mil), then set the drum scales at division “0”. For this purpose, release carefully the screws for fastening scales, coincide the division “0” of the deflection correction drum scales and the division “0” of the range drum scales with the stationary indicators on the sight body, tighten the screws for fastening the scales. In that case the rotation of knobs is not allowed.
30
If it is necessary to zero the optical sight at the other ranges, zeroing should be performed by rotation of the range drum. Mark notches corresponding to the ranges on the range scale against the indicator, then the scale point meanings enter the table 2.
Table 2 Range, m 100 200 300

8.4 Maintenance in Storage. To keep the rifle in a ready-to-fire condition it should be always
cleaned and lubricated with a thin layer of rifle oil. The rifle should be stored in a dry room without sharp fluctuations of
temperature, far from heating devices and without aggressive admixtures in the air.
To avoid the appearance of the residual deformation of the mainspring the trigger should be pulled.
