He received his B.S. Degree from A & I stte University (today known as Tennessee State University) Nashville, T N and his M.S. Degree from Columbia University, NY. -mmmmma^ wmmaam • Coach Sims began his teaching career at Haynes School in Nashville, TN ^ i ^^^MaJ teaching Social Studies, History and Physical Education. He holds the distinction of being the first Physical Education Teacher hired by the Davidson County School System (today known at Metropolitan Public School System). His illustrious coaching career began at Haynes High School with twenty outstanding years as football, baseball and basketball coach. His football charges posted a respectable 6-4 record in 1947, and improved dramatically to 8-2 in 1948. In 1949, Coach Sims' system emerged triumphant as Haynes High School's basketball team vanquished many stalwart opponents enroute to an astonishing 30-0 record with three losses coming at the hands of arch- rival Pearl High School. In 1959 under his inspired guidance, the Haynes football squad lost one game and in 1960 enjoyed an impressive undefeated season; the team was honored to play in the Blue Bowl in both these landmark years. With the brilliant coaching and firm but fair discipline Coach Sims catapulted Haynes High School to three championship, for four years, led both the boys and girls basketball teams to the finals. Coach Sims a gentleman of great courage and conviction, has never allowed adversity to stand in the way of reaching his goal; before Haynes had a gymnasium he would take his players to other facilities to practice at night, using his own automobile for transportation. During the course of his remarkable twenty-year tenure, he has molded an indelible legacy which encompasses the virtues of hard work, per- severance, self-discipline and numerous other qualities this decent man has exemplified in his daily life. Because of his outgoing commitment to leading the examined life with liberality and courage. He earned the love and respect and admiration of his students, fellow faculty members, parents and the community as a whole. August 5, 1995—Jimmy Naifeh, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the ninety-ninth General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, at the request of and in conjunction with Representative Mary Pruitt of Nashville, proclaimed that Coach Harvey Sims be specially honored and recognized for his twenty years of distinguished service to the students and faculty of Haynes High School. He was saluted for his outstanding record as a football and basketball coach, and his even more outstanding record as an inspi- rational leader and compassionate counselor to young men and women. Coach Sims was formerly married to Margaret M . Aims, from that union one daughter, Attorney Joy M . Sims. Since retirement, Coach Sims has scouted for the Houston Oilers, served as a Metro Councilman, worked at Nashville Electric Service and serving as landlord to his tenants. He has also volunteered in Pioneer/Wildcat 2006 Page 72
