This said, a classroom or a workspace can be very over stimulating to someone on the spectrum.

Not to mention the mall, a concert, banquet hall or house gathering.

If you understand can you care?

http://mirkabreen.blogspot.com/2012/03/daylight-savings-dilemma.html

If you had Asperger’s/Autism your typical day at school

could be extremely exhausting in a classroom with a lot of

wall hangings, noises and social interactions.

Learning would become second to being able to cope with

the environment.

Page 25: Autism - Running Across Americasteveknowlton.com/pdf/GeneralOutreach.pdf · . ... Taste-Textures and difference in food tastes ... Smell- Strong smells may actually make

If you understand can you care?

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/confusion.htm

If you had Asperger’s/Autism your typical day at work could be all about communication and socialization. Fitting in would be work in itself and understanding the rules of the work environment can be interpreted wrong.

Page 26: Autism - Running Across Americasteveknowlton.com/pdf/GeneralOutreach.pdf · . ... Taste-Textures and difference in food tastes ... Smell- Strong smells may actually make

If you understand can you care?

So… If you had Asperger’s/Autism your typical day could have behavioral challenges because of not understanding a typical day.

How would you feel living each day not fitting in?

Page 27: Autism - Running Across Americasteveknowlton.com/pdf/GeneralOutreach.pdf · . ... Taste-Textures and difference in food tastes ... Smell- Strong smells may actually make

What can we learn?

All things can be learned but not necessarily understood the way we understand things.

Not all things learned would be understood in different environments.

Understanding how much someone that has Asperger’s/Autism has to learn over and above what we do just to fit in is overwhelming.

Page 28: Autism - Running Across Americasteveknowlton.com/pdf/GeneralOutreach.pdf · . ... Taste-Textures and difference in food tastes ... Smell- Strong smells may actually make

What can we learn?

They are modest, intelligent, and straight forward

They have interesting facts that we can learn from and problem solve in a unique way.

They don’t follow the social rules therefore they are what they are- no hidden agendas.

They don’t evaluate people because of age, race, social status or hierarchy.

They tend to become experts in the talents they possess.

Page 29: Autism - Running Across Americasteveknowlton.com/pdf/GeneralOutreach.pdf · . ... Taste-Textures and difference in food tastes ... Smell- Strong smells may actually make

What can we learn?

Their perspectives are original and often misunderstood but really should be heard.

We hope that others will start seeing their uniqueness as refreshing and important to our society as a whole.
