The Auteur Theory

• This theory suggests that a director can use the commercial apparatus of film making in the same way that a writer uses a pen or a painter uses paint and a paintbrush.

• The auteur theory reflects the directors personal creative vision through their work. They are recognized through what they do as they always use it in their work.

Chris Cunningham

• Chris Cunningham is a British music video film director and video artist. He has worked with groups such as Autechre and Aphex Twin. Aphex Twin "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker" are two of his best known music videos.

• Cunningham uses the Auteur Theory in is videos, his themes include dark unusual narrative, this could portray a gothic, creepy, scary visual.

Hype Williams

• Harold better known as "Hype" Williams was born 1970. Hype is an American music video and film director.

• Hype Williams is on of many music video directors who us the Auteur theory in their work.

• Hype Williams has created a many music videos and has worked with a number of R&B, Hip-Hop artists including The Notorious B.I.G ,LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj and many more

Nicki Minaj: Stupid Hoe

• "Stupid Hoe" is a song by Trinidadian-American hip hop artist Nicki Minaj. It was released on December 20, 2011. It was produced by Diamond Kuts, the video for the song was shot and directed by Hype Williams.

• This videois described as an anthem to Minaj's female haters. This is a performance video as the artiest is performing her song throughout.

• The video begins with a close-up of Minaj's mouth syncing the words of the song as the background and colour of her lips change to the song beat. There is a shot where Minaj has extreme blue eye make-up, mimicking the cover to the 1985 Grace Jones album Island Life. the pace of the editing is fast as it fits the pace of the song.

Busta Rhymes: Put your hands where my eyes could see

• "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" is a song by American rapper Busta Rhymes from his second studio album When Disaster Strikes (1997). The song is best remembered by its music video, directed by Hype Williams, a main feature is when Busta wakes up, gets dressed and brushes his teeth along with his maids. The video is based on John Landis's 1988 film Coming to America.The chorus is a well choreographed dance routine which is followed by Busta running with an elephant in glowing tribal African make-up and outfit. The video received heavy rotation on both the MTV and BET networks.

Kanye West: All of the lights

• "All of the Lights" is a song by American hip hop recording artist Kanye West, released January 18, 201. including John Legend, The-Dream, Elly Jackson, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Elton John, and Rihanna.

• "All of the Lights" was featured for the first time on "Runaway"—a 35-minute film about West's "true labor of love“.

• This video has been given a warning that "potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy" and removed its opening prologue and neon credits.

• The beginning of the song starts with a black and white filter introduction to the narrative. When the song starts it there is big, bold ,colourful font flashing on the screen with the lyrics while the artist Rihanna is singing the chorus.

• In the three music videos produced by Hype Williams that I am analysing I can see that he uses bright acid colours along side dark backgrounds. The effect of this is to make the colours stand out. When the bright lights are shown in each of the music videos they are flashing to a fast pace edit. In the Nick Minaj video there is a lot secondary colours flashing contrasting with a dark background. Kanye West is similar to Nicki Minaj’s video. The difference between them two videos and Busta’s video is that he has more pastel colours however also contrasting with a dark background.

• In many of the videos Hype William’s has produced he uses big titles eg in Kanye West- All of the lights & Nicki Minaj- Stupid Hoe ,this make the lyrics to the song stand out. In “all of the lights” the lyrics are on the screen for the first chorus of the song. The lyrics flash on the screen in bright colours fitting the pace of the song. When the audience watch this video it allows them to sing along to the chorus and learn the lyrics. In Nicki Minaj’s video it is slightly different as the only big font on that appears on the screen is “Stupid” this emphasizes what she is singing about. The video Busta Rhymes: Put your hands where my eyes could see doesn't consist of big font in the video, however I know that this is part of Hype Williams Auteur Theory because he uses it in a few other video such as Kanye West- Gold Digger.

• In some of Hype William's video he alters the speed of the editing in order to make it look robotic. This is effective and interesting way to make the video look more interesting. This is used in all of the videos I have been analysing. Nicki Minaj’s videos commonly use this effect in her videos as it fits the character she portrays to the audience. This effect is effective in “all of the lights because it illustrates the title of the song. Busta’s video is very abstract and unusual so the fast pace editing fits and works well with the style of the video.
