    Austria

Before visiting Austria for the first

time, most people have a vision

    of snow-capped peaks, tumbling

    cataracts, tilted mountain meadows,

    gingerbread chalets and pretty

    onion-domed churches. All these

exist in abundance, but Austria ismuch more than alpine vistas and

    appealing hillside villages. The

    country, stretching some 700

    kilometres from the Swiss border

on the shores of the Bodensee

in the west to the edge of the

flat Hungarian plain in the east,

    encompasses rolling hills, broad

    valleys, wide rivers, fertile farmland,

    delightful cities, magnificent

    Baroque architecture, as well as

    some of Europes most spectacular

    alpine scenery.

In the past the country wielded authority and influence far beyond its

physical size. The Habsburg dynasty rulers of Austria for over 600 years,

built the Austro-Hungarian Empire into a formidable world power and at

the time were the most dominant force in Europe. Such wealth led to a

flowering of music, literature and architecture, a cultural inheritance that

visitors can enjoy today. The generous patronage offered by the

Habsburgs attracted European composers in the 18th and 19th centuries

Beethoven, Brahms, Hayden, Mozart, Schubert and the Strausses all

came to Austria at some stage in their careers. Today, this rich musical

heritage lives on in the form of the Vienna Philharmonic, the unrivalled

Vienna Boys Choir, the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus.

    Austria

remain the main attraction for most visitors, Austrias cities reward

exploration. Vienna, the capital, as the seat of the Habsburgs, is built on

a suitably imperial scale - there are palaces, art collections, museums

and splendid 19th century architecture lining broad tree-shaded avenues.

Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is an intoxicatingly Baroque city whose

skyline is punctuated with countless ornate spires, domes, belfries and

turrets. Further west, Innsbruck, situated in the valley of the River Inn atthe intersection of several Alpine passes, harbours a precious collection

of mediaeval buildings where the upper storeys of the houses almost

    meet above the narrow streets.

Friendly people complement the spectacular scenery, excellent food, well-

developed resorts and high standards of services and facilities. Wherever

you stay you will experience Gemtlichkeit, an Austrian term meaning a

combination of hospitality, contentment and cosiness.

Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is a picturesque city straddling the

Salzach River and sheltered by surrounding mountains. The cultural

capital of Austria, Salzburg is set amidst natural beauty and combines

the charm of a smaller city with the extravagance of a cosmopolitan

centre. The old town is a Baroque masterpiece and everywhere glorious

churches and splendid palaces and mansions reflect the citys

distinguished history. Salzburg literally means salt fortress Salzburgs

riches were based on the revenues from the nearby salt mines. These

riches were the foundation for the citys glorious architecture, which is

why Salzburg has often been called the Rome of North for its

    outstanding beauty.

All sights are within walking distance from the spacious old city (Altstadt).

A few miles to the south of the city are the historic towns of Hallein and

Highlights of the excursion include the Imperial Palace, built by ArchdukeSiegmund the Rich around 1460 and then rebuilt in the Baroque-style

between 1754 and 1773 on orders of Empress Maria Theresa;the Golden

Roof (though the tiles that give it its name are actually made of copper),

which was built in the 1490s to shelter members of the imperial court when

they wanted to observe the square below;Ambras Castle, perched high on

a hill overlooking the city, built by Archduke Ferdinand II in the 16th century.

It is divided into a lower and an upper castle set in the remains of a mediaeval

fortress. The lower castle was planned as a museum for the Archdukes

collections of arms, armour, art and books, all of which can be seen today.

The upper part houses the Habsburgs Portrait Gallery, an awe-inspiring

collection including works by Tizian, Van Dyck and Velsquez.

We then visit Swarovski Kristallwelten, created in 1995 to mark the

centenary of the foundation of the Swarovski factory. Works by Salvador

Dali and Andy Warhol and the largest kaleidoscope in the world are just

    some of the intriguing displays.

    Salzburg Excursions

Starting with a drive through inspiring

    Alpine scenery from Salzburg, your

you will be met by your personal guide.

The tour provides a perfect introduction

to this startlingly beautiful city, whose

strategic location at the junction of two

important routes across the central Alps

has made it a centre of commerce and

    traffic.

Lying in the valley of the River Inn amongst

a panorama of Alpine peaks, the town was

the residence of the Habsburg dynasty in

the 15th and 16th centuries and today

    Innsbrucks mediaeval buildings with their
