JUNE 2012
FROM THE EDITOR
It’s no secret that tennis’ top names measure success in Grand Slam
terms, some of them disappearing for weeks at a time to save mind and
body for the most prestigious events in the tournament calendar.
But that doesn’t diminish the value of other events, particularly when they
provide superb stepping stones to further successes. Victoria Azarenka
pre-empted her Australian Open breakthrough with the Sydney title and
more recently, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova claimed important career
victories in the lead up to the French Open.
Then there’s Roger Federer and Serena Williams, who have each struck
devastatingly successful formulas in their spasmodic scheduling. At the
time of writing, Federer had claimed four of the seven tournaments he’d
contested in 2012, usurping Nadal at world No. 2 in the process. Serena was
a winner in two of her five events for the season and at world No. 6, on target
to rise to the heights she achieved before injury intervened.
The fans who miss those modern day legends during occasional hiatuses
no doubt gain a greater appreciation when they deliver their best in the
Grand Slam setting. That could be particularly true at Wimbledon this
year, with early signs suggesting the multiple champions will be physically
and mentally ready to add more history to their glittering records.
Federer and Serena are not the only former champions who’ll be
attracting interest at the All England Club. Venus Williams has also made
steady progress in her recovery from illness. Ten years after he claimed
his title there, Lleyton Hewitt will be fired up for another big performance,
following a quicker-than-expected return from foot surgery.
Petra Kvitova and Novak Djokovic’s maiden Wimbledon titles in
2011 carried cross generational appeal, with both overcoming former
champions in the final. That could again be the case in 2012, as bright
young prospects and established stars step into the spotlight on the
game’s biggest stage.

What a difference a year can make. Never does this statement ring more true
than for Australia’s Fed Cup players, who travelled to Germany and knocked off a team touted as one of the world’s strongest, courtesy of its three top-30 singles players and a doubles specialist.
“I think a year ago we had our worst loss in some time against Ukraine and this time we have had our best win in quite some time,” Taylor said after world No. 5 Sam Stosur dismissed Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic to seal victory for Australia.
“I think Sam has had a great couple of months and this is exactly where she needs to be heading into the clay court season,” Taylor added.
There could be no underestimating Stosur’s importance to the team. In the same round last year, Australia faced the Ukraine on home soil but without the services of Stosur, who skipped the tie to focus on her French Open preparation in Europe. While there was a positive as Jarmila Gajdosova emerged as a fine Fed Cup leader, it was outweighed by a broader disappointment when Gajdosova and Anastasia Rodionova surrendered the deciding doubles rubber.
A year later, though, Stosur, who also featured in the win against Switzerland
earlier in the year, was back leading the team. Despite the tall-order they faced, Stosur sympathised with the pressure the German team faced when the tie was played on home soil at a packed Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. At the same time, she also understood that if Australia were to win, she’d have to perform at her best.
“There was pressure on them to try and perform here and play well,” she said. “On paper they had the stronger team but it is not easy either way. I was the highest ranked player here so there
was pressure on me as well to perform but it is not easy.”
Taylor was not only happy with the way Stosur played up to her top five ranking, especially after the rocky start the Gold Coaster had to the year, but was equally impressed with Gajdosova’s upset of hard-hitting Julia Goerges to establish a remarkable 2-0 lead at the end of day one.
“Jarka made Julia really uncomfortable from the speed of the ball and when someone is hitting the ball that hard and so many are going in, it can make
The odds were seemingly stacked against them but
members of Australia’s Fed Cup team had the spirit and
skill to conquer their more-fancied German opponents
in Stuttgart. With that victory gaining entry into the
elite World Group, Australia is primed to square off for
bigger spoils in 2013. BEN CARENCO reports
Fed Cup:
Back where we belong
World No. 5 Sam Stosur is a natural leader in the Australian team.
Building individual rankings is a key to team success, according to captain David Taylor.
Casey Dellacqua’s Fed Cup return was followed by resurgence into the top 100.
A short but significant journey will see Serbia contest the Fed Cup final for the
first time in history, after starting in the Europe/Africa zonal group in 2008. Having progressed through World Group II in 2009 and debuted in the World Group in 2010, the Serbians are relishing the opportunity to defeat defending champion Czech Republic to claim the world team title in November.
“To get to the final has always been my dream,” Serbia’s Fed Cup captain Dejan Vranes reflected after Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic conquered the Russian pairing of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semi-final in Moscow. “I always believed it was possible
and we’ll do everything we can in the next few months to prepare.”
It was Jankovic who hit the winning point that sent Serbia into the final, which was fitting for a player who has been a part of the team for its entire journey.
“I’ve achieved a lot in my individual career,” said Jankovic after the tie. “I’ve been No. 1 in the world, but playing for my country is very special and it has a different feeling. We have come a long way. I remember those days when we played in those lower groups. To be playing for the trophy for our country is so exciting.”
Serbia will start the final against the Czech Republic (which defeated Italy
in a home semi-final) as underdogs but as Vranes notes, “in the final anything is possible.”
Serbia Surges into Contention
you nervous,” he said. “(It) was a terrific performance.”
After improving her ranking to world No. 33 at the end of 2011, the Australian has struggled in 2012. The win against Goerges, which was the Australian’s first win over a top 20 player in more than a year, was a welcome return to her trademark hard-hitting style.
“I was trying to play my game. Be aggressive from the beginning and concentrate on my return game,” Gajdosova said. “I think I just played very well today. Julia is a good player and I just made more winners than errors than she did.”
Gajdosova is building a reputation for performing well under pressure in the elite team format. She sits at a 5-2 win/loss record in Fed Cup and has become a vital ingredient in the team’s success. If she continues along this way and consistently finds form at the right time in 2013 then the team is poised for a big year next year, especially if Stosur continues to fire from the front.
“We have had a good Fed Cup team the past few years but we have not really had all our players in form at the same time,” Taylor noted in Stuttgart. “With the players we have got, I think Australia belongs in the World Group.”
Taylor was clearly happy to secure Australia’s standing in the World Group for 2013 but is aware of the quality of next year’s opponents. One of those being Fed Cup powerhouse the Czech Republic, who will play-off for their second Fed Cup trophy in a row when they host Serbia in the final in November.
The 2013 World Group will also consist of teams from Italy, Russia, America, Japan and the Slovak Republic, with Australia’s opponents to be determined in a draw that will be conducted during the French Open.
“Everyone is of a high standard but I think we are as good as any and we look forward to playing some big ties in the future,” Taylor said. n
