President’s Report B y N i g e l D u t t o n

Very pleased to see, with a week to go, the Daytime Open Pairs has 18 tables. That is an

excellent turnout; if you want to play quality state level bridge but are reluctant to play at night then these events are for you. Also pleased to see, for the first time, that our premier congress event the Swan River Swiss Pairs is full with 60 tables. If you want to play keep your eye on the entry page for a late withdrawal. Even with the building extensions at Mandurah BC the Golden West is also full; this year with 54 tables. As happened last year I will run a Reserve List for the Golden West starting approximately a month out from the event. The Provincial / Restricted GNOT heat has also substantially improved table numbers from last year; eleven teams this year up for five in 2016.

Welcome back to our Canberra ANC teams; I was watching not only the results but also the Canberra weather which produced a number of -5 degrees overnight lows during the championships. Congratulations to the WA Youth Team, Renee Cooper, Francesca McGrath, Kirstyn

Fuller, Jack O'Reilly, Rebecca O'Reilly and Megan O'Reilly, who played exceptionally well for the entire qualifying rounds only to be overwhelmed by a very strong NSW team in the final. The WA Women’s team, Jan Blight, Joan Touyz, Deana Wilson, Cynthia Belonogoff, Doreen Jones and Catherine Hood, were very unlucky not to make the final as they were comfortably in second spot for most of the qualifying rounds only to suffer the “perfect storm” in the last round suffering a big loss to NSW and Queensland leap frogging them with a big win over Victoria. In the Restricted Butler the winners of the WA Restricted Butler event, Bhavna Patel and Nilesh Patel finished a very creditable 4th in the national final.

Apart from the Swan River Swiss August has the three week State Mixed Pairs event; this popular event starts on the 17th so you should have plenty of time to enter. The state’s premier teams event starts early September; it is a 6 week event, if that is more than you can commit to why not start planning a six person team now. I note that the calendar until the end of November is packed with weekend congresses and Gold Point events so get busy and get your entries in. ∎

“Paul Brayshaw and Chris Mulley of the WA Open Team play a Forcing Pass system when not vulnerable. One of the opposing team captains has mentioned to me that Paul and Chris, knowing that the pair they were playing was relatively inexperienced at this level, offered to just play Standard. We thought that, given the seriousness of the competition, this was a pretty nice gesture that reflected well on them and deserved a mention here.”

New Bridge Laws (Taken from ANC Daily Bulletin No 2: Sunday 16th July – with appreciation)

The new laws of bridge take effect from 1 August in Australia. They are a result of a process that began around five years ago. There was a need to refine the laws in the light of recent experience but a principal driver was concern that the current laws were in parts too difficult to understand.

THE PROCESS

The process was driven by the Laws Committee of the World Bridge Federation, of which Laurie Kelso is Secretary. To get as much input as possible, the Committee invited submissions from bridge players both at the initial stages and for comments on the penultimate draft. To avoid any suggestion that proposals were not dealt with on their merits, the author’s identity was removed from submissions before being considered by Committee members. Richard Hills created the index for the new laws (as he did for the current version).

OVERVIEW

It is probably fair to say that most players will notice in day-to-day play, very little, if any change. This is partly because much of the work has been to make the wording reflect more clearly current interpretation of the laws and partly because many of the changes deal with situations that are not everyday occurrences. There has been a particular emphasis on making it easier for Directors to allow play to continue when a problem has arisen and for penalties to reflect the actual need for redress for the non-offending side. Some of the changes may look a little esoteric or even obvious. For example, the new definitions section specifies that a person ceases to be dummy when play ends. However, all of these things, if left undefined or ambiguous, have potential ramifications. What follows is a brief summary of the main changes as they may appear to players.

Claims

For non-expert competitors, the main change is about claiming. Under the current laws, once a player has claimed, the hand can no longer be played and the Director must be called – who will then adjudicate on whether the claim is correct. Under the new laws, if all players agree, the hand can be played out without the need to call the Director. However, if the hand is played out, the non-claiming side cannot claim any redress if they are disadvantaged by this (for example, opposition to a claim may alert declarer to the fact that a trump is still out).

Insufficient Bids

There have been improvements to the insufficient bid rules, particularly the introduction of a ‘comparable call’ concept as a basis for allowing the auction to continue as normal. This better covers the complexities sometimes involved in changing a bid to a higher level without altering the meaning.

Mistaken Bids/Incorrect Explanations

There has been some clarification of the laws in relation to mistaken bid and incorrect explanation situations. This includes explicitly stating that an incorrect explanation is an infraction of the laws but also providing a player who realises he has made an incorrect explanation the option of correcting it at the time or at the end of the auction.

Preventing Irregularities

All players, including dummy, can try to prevent any irregularity by opponents as well as partner. Players can now also inform opponents as well as partner that they have a trick turned the wrong way.

Cheating

There are some additional measures related to possible cheating, including requirements to use fully symmetrical patterns on fronts and backs of cards and more Director discretion where boards may have been fouled in suspicious circumstances.

Misconduct

Extraneous actions are now specifically included in possible misconduct and, in cases of misconduct during an event, a Director will be able to suspend or expel a single player rather than the entire team.

Scoring Errors

It will be possible to correct scoring errors beyond the normal cut-off point if the error is beyond reasonable doubt.

Disclosure of Methods

The new laws remove the current impossibly high standard for full disclosure of methods in all situations and instead allow the level of detail that is appropriate to be determined by governing bodies.

Unauthorized information

The code has been revised to remove anomaly in the laws related to unauthorized information to ensure that all plays and bids that might have been suggested by the authorised information are barred where there is a logical alternative.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Laurie Kelso will be preparing a series of articles for the ABF Newsletter on the new laws in coming months. (Thanks to Richard Hills for the information on which this article is based).

Bunbury Bridge Club F r o m J a n M o r g a n

In and around all clubs there are unsung, unofficial and largely unknown, volunteers who actively further the game of bridge and in our club JUNE KEIL is one such person.

Some years ago we were asked to deliver our beginners’ course at the Eaton Library. At the end of the six weeks, June continued with this group and now provides a happy meeting place of 3-4 tables of people interested in learning more about the game.

Most of those attending have completed our six week course of Standard American and some come along to our supervised duplicate evening session, but are not quite ready to face the sometimes intense competition and time requirements of our regular club sessions.

June is a retired teacher, who is a Joan Butts devotee, having attended the Joan Butts workshops. She is well organised, has a kind and friendly nature, a good sense of humour and is endowed with vast patience – therefore wonderfully suited to once a week hosting a group of would-be bridge players who enjoy playing the ‘game’ as a game whilst strengthening their basic bridge skills.

Well done June Keil.

A great community effort and a great attribute to our club.

It is hard to believe more than half of 2017 has gone and our AGM is next month. Our new committee members’ nominations are all in and now we have only one position left to fill. We are all looking forward to another great year with Salim Songerwala at the helm as President.

Congratulations, to two of our favourite members, Bhavna Patel and Nilesh Patel. After winning the local finals of the ANC Restricted Pairs they flew off to Canberra for the National competition. Watch this space for further details of their success.

The Inaugural Swiss Pair Championship for club members only was held at the club on Saturday 24th June. It proved to be very popular and hugely successful.

During a tea break someone asked of the origin of Swiss Pairs, so I searched Wikipedia and here are a few of the opinions.

1. "It originated in Chess, as far as I know, and then was adapted by bridge. It is a means of pairing of opponents with similar scores at each stage."

2. "I cannot verify this right now, but I have a vague memory that in Eric Jannersten memoirs ( or in some other Swedish book / magazine) the Swiss Etymology was described as being originally Swedish and got shortened to Swiss."

Page 12: Australian National Bridge Championshipsd7963.mysite.westnethosting.com.au/bw/august17.pdf · 2 “BRIDGE – an Olympic Mind Sport” Australian National Bridge Championships Scoring

12 “BRIDGE – an Olympic Mind Sport”

3. "The internet tells me that the system was developed by Julius Muller, a meteorologist and teacher in Brugg, for use in the Swiss Chess Congress, starting in 1889 and recorded in its modern form for the 1901 tournament."

Whatever the origin it is a super fun event in bridge and we hope next year to have a greater number of entrants.

Geraldton Congress F r o m R o b i n a M c C o n n e l l

MID WEST TRICKS Anyone contemplating the trip north to Geraldton to play in the Congress would be strongly encouraged to do it. It was a wonderful weekend of bridge, hospitality and fun. The sun shone for the weekend and at night we sat around the camp fire with the most amazing scenery.

A couple of wines and a table of food launched the event on the Friday evening and it was great to catch up with our old Kalgoorlie adversaries who took a train and bus and arrived in Geraldton two days later for the bridge. Players also arrived from the south west and the metro area. The welcome pairs were won easily by Denis and Chris Lawrence with a creditable 70%.

A big day of bridge followed on Saturday with the Open Pairs decided in the morning and then straight into the Teams. Eugene and I were lucky enough to win this event (and the raffle but that is another story) with Laurie Money and Lyndall Steed second and Wilma Coloper and Jennifer Simpson third.

The Teams was a tight event played over six rounds with all teams scoring at least one win and the first three place getters having members from the home club. With only .73 separating them it was well done to the Cupitt team. The Knight team second with Brian Baldock’s team in for third.

The weekend finished with a BBQ lunch, a few more wines and a quiet afternoon nap! It was a sensible decision to drive home the next day! And the story of the congress goes to the beautiful lady from Geraldton who finally got to play a hand in the team’s match and remarked how

exciting it was to be playing as she is usually in the kitchen!

To Ask or Not to Ask … F r o m D i B r o o k s

It doesn't matter what system you play, it is usual to have Stayman in your tool bag. Another handy gadget is the use of Transfers. So let's look at an example;-

North opened an Acol 1NT, East passed and South invited with 2NT. North, having the full 13 points accepted the invitation and bid 3NT. The C3 hit the table and Dummy's hand was exposed. Declarer knew they were in trouble, as both hands held a doubleton club. Sad to say the contract was doomed. South had a five card heart suit and had focused on his point count rather than show the major holding.

A handy tip to remember - No Shape, No Stayman. This also applies to transfers or Rescue bids.

Another point of note, 9 tricks in No Trumps brings in 400 or 600, but 4Hearts collects 420 or 620, depending on the vulnerability.

Happy Bridging ☺

WABC Masters in Teams of 3 Congratulations to W.A.B.C for their Masters Teams of 3 held on Sunday 2nd July. Twenty two teams were scheduled to play. (Unfortunately one team was a No Show.) The dreaded Devil's Triangle had to be put into place - always a night mare for the directors.

John Beddow, Convenor, along with Director, Bill Kemp and trainee, Brian Wade, kept everything

flowing, even with a few glitches. (The computer threw a wobbly and the weather did too)

Masters who have represented State and Inter-State bridge championships gave their time to play in this great event. To name drop - Peter Smith, Fiske Warren, Chris Mulley … to name but a few, added spice to the mix.

Special mention to the two teams from Northam who came along to join the fun.

Well done to everyone involved, whether on the playing, tournament or catering side, you all did a great job.

To my three team mates, congratulations for playing so well. I had a ball, even if I had to play Acol. (Tongue in cheek girls.)

Not everyone can win. But the old adage of It's not whether you win or lose, but how you played the game' flowed through the day, making it a great event.

Hopefully we will see you all next year.

This year M in T of 3 was held on Sunday 2nd July. Twenty-Two teams entered, but unfortunately one team did not turn up requiring the Director, Bill Kemp to run a triangle. We had a late start due to problems with the Bridgemates which eventually resulted in a manually scoring procedure and the loss of one round. Nevertheless, Bill soldiered on under very trying conditions and we eventually managed to get five rounds in. The winning team with four wins and one loss was: David Wheaton, Carol O'Grady and Bruce Mason all from BAWA’s newest club Joondalup. They were ably captained by Tim Munro.

We were also delighted to see that two teams from Northam made the journey to take part. Well done. Both the Northam teams recorded two wins.

Apart from the unfortunate Bridgmate problems, judging by the number of players who approached me at the end, it would seem that most of you had a good time.

We look forward to seeing you next year.

You should play DQ at trick 1. If this is covered by the king, then the odds are very good that the heart finesse is working – East is not likely to make a weak jump overcall with two side kings.

If the DQ is covered with DK, win DA and take the heart finesse.

If the DQ holds, as shown in the diagram, cash SA and play a low trump from dummy (not the ace: take a look at what happens if you do). If someone wins HK and gives their partner a ruff, you can count yourself extremely unlucky. If that doesn’t happen, you can ruff a spade and claim soon after.

The moral: The bidding can help guide the play.

Maximize Your Chances B y R o n K l i n g e r

SOLUTION From an Interstate Teams match.

Both South’s were in 3NT, no East-West bidding. One South had no trouble after West led a club. At the other table West led the H4, ducked to East’s HK. East switched to the D10, ducked. South won the next diamond and played a club to the queen and king. Back came a diamond. South cashed the hearts. West followed throughout and East

pitched a diamond and a club. Now South had a dilemma: club finesse or spade finesse? South played a club to the ace, no luck, then the SK and a spade to the jack. No luck there either. East had begun with:

♠ Q9 ♥ K5 ♦ Q10853 ♣ KJ95

After taking the SQ, East was able to cash a diamond and a club for one down. That was E-W +100 and 12 Imps.

After East wins the HK and shifts to a diamond, why not take this and test the spades first? Play SA, SK. When the SQ drops you have nine tricks. If the SQ has not dropped, you can still play a club to the queen and later a club to the ten.
