Dear fellow Rotarians: I embarked on the road to Rotary in part because of my friend and mentor George Campbell, who taught me the importance of civic responsibility. After starting down that road, I encountered many other Rotarians walking the same path, who offered their help and made sure I kept moving in the right direction. I am the person I am today because of Rotary. And to be a member of the Rotary family is to be a part of something much bigger than yourself. It means that you are part of a worldwide team; together, we have provided extraordinary service to the world. We are closer than ever to achieving our promise of polio eradication. Through service projects, we have met the needs of local and global communities. We have developed strategic partnerships that allow us to work with like-minded organizations and achieve an even great impact. Today, our world is depending on us to do even more. Now is the time to capitalize on our success and to catapult Rotary forward to be an even greater force for good in the world. To do this, we must work together. Remember that today is the first day of the rest of your life, and how you spend it is up to you. I know that, together, we can accomplish great things this year as we continue the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity. Sincerely,

John F. Germ 2016-17 President, Rotary International

Ian was inducted into the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills in 1995 and in less than a year was elected to the Club Board as Vocational Service Director. He also served as Community Service Director at Pennant Hills. After transferring to the Rotary Club of Laurieton in 1998, he has served as the Club President twice, Treasurer twice and Club Secretary three times and has experienced all Club Director positions. Ian has been married to Barbara for over 40 years. They raised three children and have six grandchildren. For the past 19 years, Ian and Barbara have lived on a property at Lorne, inland from Laurieton and have raised beef cattle and alpacas in partnership with their son.

Originally a Sydney boy, Ian’s passion was always to join the NSW Police Force which he did and reached the rank of Detective Sergeant. He served at Bankstown, 21 Special Squad, Armed Hold-Up Squad, Drug Squad and saw country service at Goulburn for 5 years. Whilst in Goulburn, Ian joined Apex which he enjoyed for a number of years. On returning to Sydney, Ian was posted to Parramatta Detectives and later to the Police Internal Affairs Branch. His career was mainly in the area of Criminal Investigation.

Ian joined the Army Reserve in 1973 as an Officer Cadet and later graduated as a Lieutenant in 1975. This was concurrent with his Police Service. Serving continuously in the Army undertaking both full time and reserve service for the next 26 years, he ultimately left the Police Force to further his military career. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and whilst an Infantry Officer also served in postings in Training, Logistics, Tactics and Staff Officer. He served as the Second in Command of an Infantry Battalion and Commanding Officer of 2 Units, the Regimental Training Unit and the Officer Cadet Training Unit producing Officers for the Army Reserve.

Ian studied Accountancy, qualified as a Licensed Real Estate Agent, Stock and Station Agent and Business Agent along the way. He also conducted Fraud and Audit Investigations for the Department of Education and Training whilst serving in the Reserve.

Whilst living in Laurieton he was elected as a Director of the Laurieton United Services Club and has served as a Director of that Board in two sessions, totalling over 20 years. The Scout movement featured strongly in Ian’s early life, firstly as a Scout and then as a Leader. His hobbies include caravanning, boating and fishing when time permits. Ian’s vision for Rotary in District 9650 is to strengthen existing Clubs, create a renewed interest in service to the community, to promote the public image and the relevance of Rotary. He will continue to support the Rotary Foundation and have some fun along the journey, to make a difference to his community, the country and Rotary International.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR NOMINEE 2016 - 17

Lorraine joined Rotary in January, 1992, when her newly-formed Armidale AM club made the decision to invite women

members. She was the club’s first woman President in 1995 and held the position again, 20 years later, in 2015. She has served the club in a number of positions over the years in Club Service, Membership, Public Relations, Bulletin Editor, YEP Counsellor and served in these positions several times. At District level, Lorraine was on the selection committee for Group Study Exchange for three years; chair of the Public Speaking Competition for four years; member of the District Conference Committee in 2000; and chair of the Conference Committee in 2005. In 2012, Lorraine took on the role of District PR Director, and was successful in applying for a Rotary International PR Grant. Her marketing plan included a newspaper campaign titled ‘The Face of Rotary’ in which 33 district Rotarians told readers in their communities why they were Rotarians. It also included a billboard campaign on the Pacific and New England highways, promoting the fact that ‘We Are This Close’ to ending polio around the world. Channel 7 presenter Kylie Gillies lent her face to this campaign. Lorraine held the PR position for two years during which time also wrote ‘How To Make Contact With the Media’, a guide for PR directors at club level. She will serve as Assistant Governor in 2016-17 as well as District Governor Nominee. Paul Harris recognition was given to Lorraine following her year as President in 1995. A first sapphire was added when she chaired the District Conference Committee in 2005 and a second sapphire was presented in recognition for her role as District PR Director. Lorraine’s career has been in newspapers; the past 30 years in newspaper management after starting her career as an advertising consultant. Before her retirement in 2013, she managed a group of newspapers for Fairfax Media in Armidale, Guyra and Walcha. Dennis also spent his working life in newspapers as a journalist and editor. Lorraine and Dennis have been together for 35 years. Originally from Rockhampton, the past 25 years have been spent in Armidale. Lorraine has three children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dennis has been adopted by them all. Lorraine and Dennis have participated in four Friendship Exchanges and attended four International Conventions. They have hosted many YEP students, as well as Group Study and Friendship Exchange team members over many years and, as a result, have formed friendships around the world.
