NSW Board of StudiesThe Board of Studies has prepared a draft curriculum that includes the Australian Curriculum content descriptors, and retains the level of detail you are familiar with from your NSW syllabus -2002

NSW-AusCurr•is developed in stages as before - Stages 3 and 4 discussed today•includes AusCurr proficiency strands in working mathematically•assumes content from previous stages in understood/achieved•elaborations , diagrams, background are all familiar

Working mathematically•working mathematically is not a separate topic - it MUST be embedded in the content

Movements/ChangesI have looked at where the content sits, but the level will be something for teachers to ascertain.

It looks like the content will be quite familiar to you.

Movements/Changes•Pattern and Algebra is now together with Number in ‘Number and Algebra’•Measurement and Geometry are together •Chance used to be in ‘Number’ now in Statistics and Probability strand. For example, NS 3.5 now Mathematics Stage 3 Chance 1 3.1 and 3.11 p 189 NS 4.4 now in S&P p234NLS.16 p232

Movements/Changes•Rotations, transformations and reflections of 2-dimensional shapes appears to be a new topic at stage 3.•All of the ‘old’ stage 3 content is covered in the NSW AusCurr draft.•Stage 4 assumes Stage 3.•Index laws in Stage 4.

Year 7 teachers - issuesYou may not be able to assume mastery of Stage 3 content.

Stage 4 content is a little bit of a jump... straight into algebra and algebraic techniques. Some revision of number may be needed.

You may still have some students performing at Stage 3 - but you do need to think about how you are going to move them to Stage 4. They cannot stay at Stage 3.

Advice - start with Stage 4 content with one eye on Stage 3.

•The Board of Studies has commenced the development of K–10 syllabuses for English, mathematics, science and history.

•The new syllabuses will include the Australian curriculum content descriptions and retain many of the features that are familiar to and appreciated by NSW teachers.

NSW Board of StudiesConsultation on the K–10 draft syllabuses

In Terms 2 and 3, 2011 the Board of Studies will consult with teachers and the wider community on the K–10 draft syllabuses.

Consultation will include:•meetings in metropolitan and regional areas of NSW•an online survey on the Board’s website•meetings with key stakeholders including education sectors and professional associations.
