“Solved our problem and we were extremely happy.”We purchased the curtains due to issues we had with birds coming into the warehouse, since they have been fitted we have not had a bird in the warehouse at all.

They solved our problem and we were extremely happy with the service, delivered and installed in the promised time frame.

Check to see if you have a noise problem at your workplace

Ask yourself these questions:

• do people need to raise their voice in order to communicate with someone about one metre away?

• do people notice a reduction in hearing over the course of a day?

• do workers ask you to repeat things already said?

• do workers experience any of the following:

- ringing in the ears (tinnitus)?

- the same sound having a dierent tone in each ear?

- mued hearing?

- are any of your long-term workers hard of hearing?

- do any workers operate noisy machinery for long periods?

How to Identify Noise in Your FacilityIf you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, the chances are that your workplace could be putting workers’ hearing at risk. You can also use a hand-held integrated sound level meter to measure noise levels.

Manage the noise levels

If your workers are at risk, you need to fix the problem.

• Identify the sources of noise in your workplace. Regularly walk around the workplace and talk to your workers. Find out where the noise is coming from, and what machines and work tasks produce high levels of noise

• Assess the risk and eect on workers and people near the noise areas

• Remove the cause of the noise eg get rid of noisy machinery, outsource noisy work

• Reduce the noise – if you can’t remove the noise, then you need to control it:

- buy and use quieter machines and tools with low-noise blades

- install anti-vibration mountings

- fit silencers to reduce the noise of compressed air exhausts and blowing nozzles

- regularly maintain the machinery

- move loud exhaust or extraction units outside

- install enclosures around noisy machines

- fit damping materials (such as rubber) or stiening to panels to reduce vibration

- use barriers and screens to block the noise

- turn down the volume controls on machines

- change the speeds of machines

- use remote controls to operate noisy machines from a distance

• Protect workers by changing the way the work is done:

- make sure that noisy work is done when only a few workers are present

- limit the time workers spend in noisy areas by changing work rosters to move them around, or moving them to quieter areas

- put noise warning signs up in the workplace to make workers and people aware of noisy areas and machine

- provide quiet areas for rest breaks for workers that are exposed to noisy works

- where needed, provide workers with personal hearing protection that is the right size and fit, and is comfortable to wear. Make sure the equipment is regularly maintained, repaired and replaced so it continues to reduce the noise and risk of hearing loss

- attach warning signs to tools and equipment to advise workers that personal hearing protection must be worn when using tools or equipment

- make sure workers have regular hearing checks if they are working in areas that exceed standard noise levels and require them to wear personal hearing protection

- make sure your workers are correctly trained and supervised when working in noisy areas and with noisy machines and equipment

Review the noise levels

Regularly check to see if these controls are working and if you need to take further action to remove or reduce the noise. Talk to your workers about noise hazards and controls.

Noise Surveys, Acoustic Consulting and Testing

When designing the ideal noise control solution for your facility our engineers discuss your noise control challenge with you, and take detailed noise level readings and measurements.

They take into account your available space, access, workplace ergonomics and workflows, to establish the ideal solution to your noise control issue.

The AcousTech Noise Survey and Testing Process

Some of the data gathering methods we may utilise include:

• Acoustic measurements of equivalent continuous sound level and daily exposure levels

• Acoustic modelling of your building and processes using CadnaA state of the art acoustic predictor software

• Measurements of sound reverberation time inside buildings

• Sound measurements

• Noise surveys: dierent acoustic descriptors will be used (LAEq, LA90, daily exposure, frequency spectrum, airborne or impact noise testing, reverberation time calculation, etc.)

• Modelling: spreadsheet or 3D computer-based

• Assessment: Industrial impact noise, noise reduction

• Reporting including noise mappings and management plans

• Acoustic commissioning, testing and certification

When designing an acoustic enclosure, it’s important to ensure it is customised around the needs of your factory, your processes, and your specific piece of machinery.

To do this, we perform the following critical steps: 1. An initial consultation by phone or via web call to

determine your project needs, challenges, and desired outcomes.

2. We will visit your site to inspect your processes, take sound level recordings, and step you through the possible solutions.

3. We will find out about your operations such as how you use the machine, whether you need access, if the machine links to anything else,

and what are the possible impacts of enclosing the machine.

4. During the design and proposal stage our acoustic engineers and technical team must evaluate and design the best possible solution that meets all your requirements.

5. Presentation of the proposed design for your approval, before it is sent to the production team for manufacture.

6. Production, delivery and installation of the custom acoustic enclosure.

7. Final handover of the acoustic enclosure. At this stage, we will gain your feedback and even source a testimonial.

Optional extras to consider when installing an acoustic enclosureTo ensure your acoustic enclosure provides the ideal noise control for your facility, consider whether you require:

• Acoustic curtains to facilitate opening up areas for access.

• Noise barriers or walls to separate noisy areas from “quiet spaces” within your factory.

• Mobile soundproof panels oering flexibility for open plan workshops.

• Acoustic linings or foams to the interior of existing enclosures, where a complete new enclosure may not be required.

Grinding Bay and Workshop Noise ControlThe average noise levels in metal fabrication workshops range between approximately 80-125dB(A). Most common noise sources are from angle grinders, metal presses, cutting saws and hammering and bashing on metal objects.

Hearing loss in the industry is a genuine and common health risk.

This client had cordoned o a corner of their facility as a grinding bay. The grinding operation could be in action for hours on

end and was an extreme health hazard to the operators and those working nearby. The transmitted noise to the o¥ce was also a significant nuisance.

Flexshield went to the site and recorded an o¥cial level of 97dB(A).

After the initial site consultation, Flexshield manufactured and installed clear, flexible noise control screens as an “L” configuration separating the grinding bay from the rest of the workshop.

The flexible noise control screens were manufactured to allow complete access for pedestrians, forklifts and product.

Being 100% clear also means that the sound control screens allow natural lighting and full visibility, both essential safety features.

Flexshield recorded the o¥cial after treatment noise at 78dB(A).
