HIGHLIGHTS OF 2018-2019
1
Teaching and Outreach
University Libraries partnered with the Office
of the Senior Vice President of Research and
Institutional Effectiveness for Augusta
University to become a US Open Researcher
and Contributor Identifier (ORCID) member
this year. The unique identifier provides an
internationally recognized ID to all who partici-
pate in research, scholarship, and innovation.
ORCID participation is essential in identifying
researchers’ publications and to connect their
contributions and affiliations throughout their
careers. This creates a more comprehensive
research profile. Librarians took the lead help-
ing faculty obtain an ID and integrating it
within Pure Research Management and PACT
Digital Measures to provide annual progress
reports for key research and scholarly measures.
Drop-in ORCID training sessions were held on
both campuses.
Three Reese librarians served as judges at the
National History Day Regional Competition
held on the Summerville campus.
Librarians from Augusta University Libraries
and Augusta-Richmond County Public Library
partnered on a program to deliver free infor-
mational sessions to the public on opioid use,
domestic abuse, cardiovascular disease, diabe-
tes, and Alzheimer’s disease. The program was
funded by the Health Outreach Award from
the National Network of Libraries of Medicine
Southeastern/Atlantic Region.
The History of the Health Sciences Lecture
Series at Greenblatt Library included topics on
History of Laboratory Medicine, History of the College
of Allied Health Sciences, and a panel discussion
on violence in women’s lives. In conjunction
with the panel discussion, a traveling exhibition
from the National Library of Medicine,
Confronting Violence, was displayed at Greenblatt
Library during the month of June.
Reese Library sponsored activities during
Banned Books Week in September to bring
awareness of
attempts to cen-
sor books in
libraries and
schools. Activities
included displays, a
social media cam-
paign on Facebook
and Instagram, and a
Banned Books Read-Out where passages from
banned and challenged books were read aloud.
2
A Research Data Management Symposium,
funded by the National Network of Libraries of
Medicine/SEA, was held at Greenblatt Library
in March. The focus was on data management
skills with topics on data visualization, security,
publishing, curation, and repositories. The
event included speakers, panel discussions, a
poster session, and exhibit area. It drew in 73
participants. The feedback was positive and
librarians have been invited to speak to
different faculty groups on campus in the
coming academic year.
Reese Library sponsored several displays during
Black History Month as well as a visiting display
from The Lucy
Craft Laney
Museum of
Black History.
A culmination
program and
reception was
held at the end
of the month with a keynote speaker and a
presentation from a local historian.
The Greenblatt Library began a new,
formalized service for health sciences faculty or
students to partner with librarians to participate
in systematic reviews. The service includes an
agreement which outlines expectations for the
librarian and the research team, including
expected time frame, a research protocol, and
authorship agreements.
All eight librarians at Reese participated in the
instruction program teaching sections of
freshman composition, ENGL 1101 and 1102,
during the academic year. Four of the librarians
taught sections of COMM 1100 which, like the
freshman composition classes, is a course in
the general education curriculum. Additionally,
major courses at the 3000/4000 level were
taught by the liaison librarians in the areas of
Sociology, Social Work, Political Science,
Psychology, Chemistry, English, Spanish,
History, Management, and Education, with an
additional 13 graduate level Education courses
receiving library instruction.
During spring 2019, two studies were
conducted by librarians at Reese on the ENGL
1102 classes. One study tested student
retention of information literacy skills by
implementing a gaming component to
instruction. The other was a pilot program for
the integration of a flipped classroom model of
library instruction for all sections of the course
that would begin in fall 2019. This
implementation is tied to the Gateways to
Completion course redesign.
Historical Collections
and Archives worked
with the Ellison family
to create a display
remembering the
accomplishments of
Dr. Lois Taylor
Ellison, who passed
away in April. The dis-
play highlighted her accomplishments as
physician, educator, researcher, administrator,
and historian.
3
Reese Library created more than 20 educational
displays throughout the year which highlighted
materials from Special Collections, Government
Documents, and the book collection. For
example, materials from Special Collections
were featured during
the University’s
Women and Gender
Studies Symposium
which highlighted
women who have
worked to change
their local community
throughout the 20th-
21st centuries.
Government Documents created a display of
documents and maps to provide information
about U.S. relations with Yemen through several
presidencies. Some other collections displayed
were topics on Independence Day, women in
STEM careers, crime, Veteran’s Day, Master’s
golf, new titles in the public domain, and staff
recommendations.
Pre-1980 print journals at Greenblatt Library
were placed in a closed stacks compact storage
area a little over a year ago. Despite their age,
they can still provide significant information for
researchers. During the past year, 138 requests
were filled for these older print items.
The Creative Technology Lab held a Grand
Opening in September 2018. One of the more
interesting projects this year has been converting
MRI scans to 3D models that can be used for
surgical planning and patient education. Since
the opening, a large media display screen, ideal
for displaying large, high-definition or 3D
images as well as being useful for collaborative
work, has also been installed in the Lab.
Resources Historical Collections and Archives at
Greenblatt Library and Special Collections at
Reese Library spotlighted many of their
artifacts, rare books, newspapers, diaries,
photographs, and exhibits from their
collections. A new exhibit case outside the
Historical Collections and Archives room at
Greenblatt Library showcases William Hunter’s
Gravid Uterus.
A sixteen month book review project at
Greenblatt Library was completed with 12,124
books reviewed, resulting in removal 14% of
them due to age, scope, usage and/or condition.
UpToDate, a clinical decision support database,
was upgraded to be available while off campus.
Dozens of new eBooks were purchased for
Greenblatt Library with the support of the
Medical College of Georgia W. J. Young
Library Fund.
The Fifth Annual Authors reception was held
in October at Greenblatt Library to recognize
university faculty from both campuses who
have published during the past year.
Greenblatt Library is in the process of
digitizing its theses and dissertations and
making them available in the Scholarly
Commons repository. Over 600 records have
been entered and online full text is available for
453 of them already in the public domain.
Permission will be sought for the remainder so
that full text will be available online for as many
as possible.
Specialized photography equipment was
purchased and used to create digital images of
items in the historical collections to add the
Scholarly Commons repository. Sixty-five items
in the Anatomical Models and Biospecimens
and 77 items in the Medical Artifacts collection
were added to the repository.
4
Library faculty are well represented on

addition, library faculty serve as editors and
peer reviewers. Library faculty and staff also
participate in institution sponsored community
events such as Costa Layman Health Fair and
Heart Walk.
