There has been a change in Pennsylvania Law as it relates to the Senior Driver Improvement Classes and your automobile insurance discounts. If you are over 55 years of age and have successfully completed a Senior Education Program in the past, you only have to attend a one day refresher course to renew your insurance discount. If you have never partici-pated in a Senior Driver Improvement Program in the past, you must attend a two day seminar to earn your automobile insurance discount. Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors

August 2014 • Beaver County Senior News

The things our mothers doBy Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

My mother likes to remind my sister and me that she is a Virgo. Growing up, we

lived comfortably in a nice home, but my mother had lots and lots of rules, procedures and thought processes about a variety of things. She has Revereware pans, which have copper bottoms. They are nice to cook in but after you wash the pan, you need to get the copper cleaner out to shine the bottom. I did not enjoy having to use the copper cleaner. I would ask my mother why would you want cookware that you not only had to wash once, but then had clean again with a special cleaner. She said, “Double the trouble, double the fun.”

My mother folds plastic grocery bags perfectly after emptying them from her shopping trip. My sister and I would ask why she takes the time to do this and why not just push them in the cloth sack to hold them? She said that if you put something in the bag to give to someone, you do not want it to look like somebody slept on it.

My mother required us to sit in the middle of a couch cushion. She did not want us crushing the cushions by sitting on the crack in between the cushions. She made us bend down to the dining room table at eye level to make sure all the crumbs and debris was wiped off. If she later found a spot that was not wiped appropriately, she would take my finger and rub over it to emphasize the importance of her rule.

We were required to wipe off every-thing before returning it to the refrig-erator—ketchup, mustard, condiment containers—so everything stayed clean. Regarding the tub of oleo, we were not allowed just to take a chunk out of it, we had to use a butter knife to take a smooth swipe of it.

She did not believe in raising children using baby talk. We did not have boo boos. We had contusions and abrasions.

My mother has this weird kinetic en-ergy in her. When she would walk past merchandise in stores, things would just fall off the shelves and racks without her even touching anything. It was not uncommon to be picking up boxes of food, scarves and clothes that would fall on the floor after she passed by.

My sister and I hated the next thing the most. One day for every year we would come home from school and would go to our bedroom to find newspaper on the floor with the contents of our nightstand drawers dumped on the pa-per. She said we had to clean them out. We were not even messy children! My mother laughs about this one now, too.

My mother reminds us that she is a Virgo. She said it is probably a good thing that her husband is, too. My mother refers to herself as Queen Mother Elizabeth. My sister and I just call her Ma. BCSN

disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 a year for renters. Half of Social Security income is counted. Applications are available online at www.revenue.state.pa.us or at state legislators’ offices and the Beaver County Office on Aging.

Virgos are meticulous, practical perfectionists. They do not like sloppiness and disorganization. If you want a job done right the first time, get a Virgo to do it. What rules and procedures did your mother have in your household? What rules do your children or grandchildren have to follow? Often, rules keep households healthy and in good order. Many of these things become part of your family his-tory. As we get older, it is fun to reminisce and reflect and even laugh about it.

News You Can Use• August 7 is Purple Heart Day. On August 14, Japan surrendered and it was the end of World War II.

• The 2013 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program has been extended through December 31, 2014. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older and people with

• August is a good month to purchase back-to-school supplies, summer ap-parel, swimwear, linens and storage, office furniture, children’s clothing, office supplies.

2 South Heights Borough is a small community of 475 residents located along the Ohio River, not far from the Ambridge Bridge. The town, originally known as Ethel’s Landing, was a docking point on the river. The name was changed to Shannopin when the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad established a station. Then the town name changed to South Heights, and the railroad station was named South Heights station.

2 Franklin Township is located in the top northeast cor-ner of Beaver County, and it borders Butler and Lawrence counties. Established in 1850, it was known as a farming community. There were farmers, stone masons, stock rais-ers and grain raisers. In 1814, Dr. Detmar Basse started the Bassenheim Iron Furnace at Old Furnace Road. The Baltimore and Ohio, Pittsburgh and Western and Harmony Short Line railroads had run through the community. With a population of 4052, it is now home to the Zelienople Mu-nicipal Airport and the Red Barn Theatre, which features summer plays.

Tidbits of Beaver County History2 Numerous movies have been filmed in Beaver County. They include I Am Number Four, filmed at Buttermilk Falls, and private residences in Beaver and Monaca; Unstoppable at Horsehead Zinc Plant; Love and Other Drugs at Aliquippa Hospital; The Road at Raccoon Creek State Park; Adventureland at two private residences in Beaver; Graduation at Farmers National Bank in Beaver Falls; King Pin at old Beaver Valley Bowl in Rochester; One for the Money in Ambridge; Wonder Boys in Beaver County; and Gung Ho in Beaver County.

2 Keystone Bakery was opened by Frederick Walters in Beaver in 1859. The company was moved to Bridgewater in 1885. In 1926, Braun Baking Co. acquired Keystone. In 1929, some of the Braun family split the business, and established Keystone Bakery as an independent company. During the 1970s, the Braun family sold the bakery. Ownership changed a few times before it ended up with the Stroehmann Broth-ers Co. Stroehmann closed the Bridgewater facility in 1985. The building has been repurposed and now is Stone Point Landing, an office building and restaurant. BCSN

Good websites for older adultsHistory can be a challenge to learn and remember during your youth at school. It seems when you are an adult, you have more time to appreciate history. Here are two websites on which you can enjoy reminiscing about United States history and world history. Both sites have quizzes, also.

www.thepeoplehistory.com has snip-pets of United States history from the 1800s and each decade from the 1920s to 1990s. Plus, there are sections on toys, music, movies, TV, sports and clothes and fashion. It is not a fancy website but the information is brief and quick to read, and there are some pictures.

www.historyworld.net makes world history accessible through interactive narratives and timelines. There are 300 narratives on topics such as countries, civilizations, biology, clocks, dance, maps and more. More than 10,000 events are available on searchable timelines. You can enter Italy and the year 2000, and numer-ous articles will come up on things that took place during that time period. BCSN

Donating your used items (and even new ones!) to RSVP is a good way to help seniors

By Valerie McElvy RSVP Director For Beaver County Senior News

Wow, did Miss Val’s garden produce results! The response from last month’s column has been amazing. Thank you! Two questions came up often: “Are there other ways to help besides volunteering at a location?” and “Are there things that you need that we could donate?”

Yes, many types of items are used at participating RSVP stations that we would love to collect and distribute to them. Here are just a few examples:

* Puzzle and fiction books for seniors in nursing homes and skilled facilities

* Greeting cards, new and used

* Stamps for mailing greet-ing cards and letters

* Gently worn and new children’s clothes and coats

* Cleaning supplies such as paper towels, Lysol wipes, large garbage bags and toilet paper

* Gently used adult cloth-ing, especially 4x and larger

* Trial-size toiletries for emergency hygiene kits

* Gas cards for when trans-portation issues arise

* Canned goods and fresh produce

* Small stuffed animals that will fit in a hand for our seniors in nursing homes

This list could go on and on, but for those of you who are interested in donating tangible items, this is a good start. If you have something else that you would like to donate, I’m sure RSVP can find a place to make good use of it! Also, please remem-ber that monetary donations are always welcome. It could be ear-marked for a specific cause. Let’s say, for example, that you have a passion for helping the elderly but don’t have a particular agency in mind. RSVP would collect your donation, give you a tax receipt and then forward that donation to a participating organization that is in line with your passion. The goal is to make it as easy as possi-ble for you to give something of yourself to others in need.

Donations can be dropped off at either of these loca-tions:

• Franklin Center of Beaver County, Inc., 524 Franklin Ave., Aliquippa, PA 15001

• Professional Outfitters and Variety Shoppe, 1035 Third Ave., New Brighton, PA 15066

If you need assistance with a drop-off donation, please call ahead so that we can have someone available to help you. Please don’t hesitate to call RSVP at (724) 378-7547 if you have any questions. BCSN

A metamorphosis has begun at a location in Beaver County where Rochester General Hos-

pital, Rochester Manor and Rochester Villa have served the local community for more than 100 years. The renovation taking place at Rochester Manor + Villa goes far beyond from fresh paint and a new logo; it extends to philosophical changes that place residents, families, guests and direct caregivers at the center of the decision process. “The major improvements, renovations and resort-like finishes—in tandem with the intensive training and education that our team has been undergoing during the past several months—have truly changed the conversation about what a healthcare community offers its guests and residents,” says Mark Kopsack, president and CEO. “Our community’s rebirth has been created with incredible amounts of research and input from our guests, residents, families and team—making what is going on inside the walls of Rochester Manor + Villa a landmark project.”

Rochester Manor + Villa is taking its reliable, quality services for short-term rehabilitation, exercise, well-ness, skilled nursing, cardiac care, orthopedic specialties, stroke recovery and other specialized areas to unprec-edented new levels. “Our primary goal for short-term guests is to produce superior results, allowing those that we serve the ability to return to their homes as quickly as possible,” Mark ex-plains. “Although, once you experience the high level of pampering offered to the guests and residents of Rochester Manor + Villa, you may want to stay a day or two longer.”

The first impression of Rochester Manor + Villa will be a sleek entrance lobby and community front porch

life events, the chef’s daily features and other pertinent community infor-mation.

At The Rivertown Café, residents and guests will enjoy features like a 24-hour beverage station, reservation seating, and a full-service, 24-hour restaurant menu prepared by Rochester Manor + Villa’s culinary team. A private din-ing area will be available for intimate small gatherings, birthday parties or even meetings. Hand-cut meats, as well as local fruits, vegetables, breads and dairy products will give the com-munity fresh food and beverage selec-tions each day. It will be a true culinary experience instead of just another deli-cious meal.

The Pub at Rochester Manor + Villa is sure to be a popular place to gather with friends and family for several reasons. This comfort-able oasis will offer residents cold beer on tap, high definition televi-

sions, and a unique menu. The Spa at Rochester Manor + Villa will be a retreat within the new community, a place to get pampered. With finishes that include individually appointed, custom-tiled shower suites, heated lamps, warmed towels and terry cloth robes, the Spa will ensure bath-ing is more than just routine. Resi-dents and guests can take relaxation and rejuvenation to the next level with the use of the spa’s whirlpool suite, which will have soft lighting, aromatherapy and the convenience of a flat-screen television for view-ing pleasure. Reservations will al-low guests and residents to use it exactly when they want to use it.

In the Sunroom, massive windows, custom glass, wood plank flooring, and Ohio River views that stretch for miles will make it a popular place to enjoy morning coffee, afternoon tea or a good book. Residents and guests can hook into the wireless network.

Also being planned is a small herb and spice garden, flowers and maybe even some home grown vegetables to tend to in this area.

This is simply a small taste of what the new Rochester Manor + Villa will have to offer. “It is more than just the bricks and mortar that are receiving massive improvements inside the walls here,” Mark says. “Most importantly, it is Rochester Manor + Villa›s revitalized commitment to educating, training and preparing our own team for the highest level of service and the next generation of guest and resident. It is these two important facets working in tandem that is changing the conversa-tion in regards to skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in our area. You have to see it to believe it.” BCSN

The Juggler

A Juggler, driving to his next performance, was stopped by the police. “What are those knives doing in your car?” asked the officer.

“I juggle them in my act.”

“Oh yeah?” says the cop. “Let’s see you do it.” So the juggler starts tossing and juggling the knives.

A guy driving by sees this and says, “Wow, am I glad I quit drinking. Look at the test they’re making you do now!”

Lost far from a home

A police car pulls up in front of grandma Bessie’s house, and grandpa Morris gets out.

The polite policeman explained that this elderly gentle-man said that he was lost in the park...and couldn’t find his way home. “ Oy Morris “, said grandma, “ You’ve been going to that park for over 30 years ! So how could you get lost? “ Leaning close to grandma, so that the policeman couldn’t hear. Morris whispered, “ I wasn’t lost.....I was just too tired to walk home.”
