Message from the President:

Kaila Mattera

Hey there Key Clubbers!

Can you believe that it is already August? I sure can’t.

This summer is flying by and soon it will be time for school

again. I hope you are all finding time in your schedules

for service to the community. Keep in mind that one of

you will win the Summer of Service Challenge and that

Fall Rally Ticket, so keep sending in your hours and make

sure to keep your hour sheets. Don’t forget about

Stillwaters Café and the Samaritan Center as great ways

to get service hours and do some good for our

community. Also, keep collecting those SOS glasses as

well as pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House. If we have

enough pop tabs in the fall, we will plan a trip to deliver

them to our local RMH in Pasadena. Other than that, I

hope you are all having a terrific summer and I will see

you all soon!

Kaila Mattera

Scallop Search: Save the Bay

Summer time is a time that I treasure spending with

my family on the east coast, and being away from

home made it harder to find volunteer

opportunities, but I found it easier than I thought, as

help is always needed somewhere. On June 27th, I

had the opportunity to volunteer with an

organization called Save the Bay. This nonprofit is

working to restore and maintain the ecosystems

that thrive along the coast in Narragansett, Rhode

Island. On this particular day, I went to help them

with their scallop restoration project. They had

pulled out several bags from the bay, called spat,

and the other volunteers and I had to use our

fingers to go through these spat bags and look and

feel them for baby scallops. The purpose of this is to

see where in the bay the scallops are reproducing

the best and to discover the conditions that are

best for their return. It was really quite fun and I felt

like a scientific detective trying to find these baby

scallops that would have been smaller than your

pinky nail. It was fascinating because, even though

we did not find any scallops, there were so many

different tiny sea creatures that I had never seen

before, like skeleton shrimp, attached to the bags

and as you found them the Save the Bay guys

would tell you what they were and all about them.

Even though it was a cloudy, drizzly day, I had a

great time, and knowing that I was helping to save

the bay made it even better.

Kiwanis Bunco Night: Saturday July 20th

Samaritan Center

The Samaritan Center (280 Royal Ave. Simi Valley, 93065) is a day-time drop-in shelter that

offers services to homeless clients in Simi Valley to help themselves. Kiwanis runs a program

at the Samaritan Center that provides a full and nutritious meal for the homeless and an

opportunity for Santa Susana (or even other high schools'!) Key Club members to directly

help someone that truly appreciates it. As Samaritan Center Chair, I've come to know the

program quite well and I've nothing but good experiences with the Kiwanis and the clients

that come in for a nice dinner. It's a humbling, eye-opening and rewarding experience

that only requires you to say hello and put food on plates. What I've come to love about

helping so much is that it's not particularly difficult but it is a needed service and I can see

that I am contributing directly to another person's well-being. I would encourage anyone

of any age to give it a try at the least - you may come to love it as much as I do! Key Club

members can help out the first Thursday of each month from 4:30 - 6 PM. It is good to have

about 4 volunteers, including myself. If you are interested or have any questions please

email me at [email protected] or [email protected].

This event held by the Kiwanis Club of Simi

Valley held a Bunco game, raffles, and a

buffet to raise money for scholarships. I helped

set up the whole event by putting the tables

and chairs out, putting the food out, and

decorating. Volunteers also stayed during the

event to help run it. Setting up the event was

enjoyable and I hope that I can volunteer for

the whole time next year!

Ongoing Events Pop Tabs Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close proximity to a hospital where families can stay when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the pop tabs and use the money to help families pay to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and other expenses needed to keep the house running. So keep collecting! They can be from canned beverages and even the tabs from canned food!

S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles) We are continually collecting glasses for SOS. Check with everyone you know to see if they have any old specs that they do not use anymore. Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana will throw us a pizza party!

Feeding the Homeless Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding the homeless and we could always use more volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service, dishes, and clean up after. o Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the Valley Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm o The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the month

Volunteer Opportunity

I have been volunteering at this animal rescue for about 6 months now and I have loved every minute

of it. I walk the puppies, fill their water and food dishes, clean their cages, and play with them. This is a

truly rewarding experience which is why I wanted to give our club an opportunity to also volunteer here.

I have attached a file for the short application to volunteer. You can turn this into the rescue (address

below). She appreciates any help, so you can volunteer at any time you are available. This is a fantastic

way to earn service hours for your summer service challenge while helping innocent puppies receive the

proper care and love that they need until they find a perfect home. If you have any questions, please

contact me. Helping animals in my passion, so I would be happy to help you start working if you are

interested. Thank you so much!

July Division Council Meeting: July 27th

The July Division Council Meeting was held at the Simi Valley

Iceoplex. First we had our meeting outside where we

discussed division projects and other happenings. Paolo did

a terrific job informing us about all of the volunteering

events D42E has been participating in. After the meeting,

we all went ice skating! Although this was my first time ice

skating, it was really fun after I learned how to skate.

Everyone had an amazing time together and I hope that

we can have more division council meetings at the

Iceoplex!

Message from you LTG: Paolo Recto What does service mean to you? Service to me means happiness. Whenever I serve my

community, it makes me happy because I look at service as a way to escape from all of the

stresses and challenges of life. I look at service as my sense of comfort and support. Service is my

happiness because I also get to spread the happiness to the people I serve as well.

Although it is summer, I hope each and every one of you are continuing to serve your

community! Summer is most perfect opportunity to get those service hours and put smiles on

many people’s faces. As school approaches, many service events begin to pour in for Santa

Susana Key Club, so be sure to take advantage of the many service opportunities Santa Susana

will offer!

The Division Leadership Team also has some events planned for all seven schools and YOU are

invited to all of them. Be sure to keep checking for updates from your club presidents and from

myself. Be sure to JOIN the division reflector and the Division 42 East Facebook group. Please do

not hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions! I hope to see you soon.

ICON 2013

During the first week of July, I, along with over 90 other CNH Key Clubbers, had the privilege to travel across the country to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., to attend the 70th Annual Key Club International Convention. While we were there, we participated in the CNH District Tour and explored the sights of Washington D.C. such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building, the World War II Memorial and so much more. We also got to visit various museums such as the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, International Spy Museum and the Newseum (News Museum) where I frolicked around enjoying the various types of social news media! (Yes, I am a big fan of journalism) After 4 days of touring, convention finally started where I met many Key Clubbers from all over the world. It was such a great experience meeting others who also shared the same passion as me, SERVICE. During the convention, CNH pumped the spirit up with a spirit battle against the Crabtastic Capital District and of course, CNH dominated! I attended many informational workshops and participated in the House of Delegates where we elected the 2013-2014 International Board. ICON 2013 was a one in a lifetime experience as I got to be in a whole different city with my Ohana. I hope to see YOU and next year’s International Convention as it will be taking place in Anaheim, CA, where the 2013-2014 Key Club year all began!

Hi! I'm Mason and I'm a junior this year and the Samaritan

Center Chair. The Samaritan Center offers our Key Club the

opportunity to help make and serve homeless people a meal

firsthand every first Thursday of the month. As Chair I help

organize that and am always looking for new people to help!

I am also intending to grow this opportunity by developing a

core group of returning members - people that would be

willing to come back monthly to help out. From there, I hope

to make this opportunity available twice a month, or even

weekly. Outside of Key Club, I enjoy being in play

productions at Santa Susana and anything involving

Stillwaters Café Chair: Jeremy Wishengrad

Hello there! I am Jeremy Wishengrad, the

Stillwaters Chair for the Santa Susana High School Key

Club. My job as the Stillwaters Chair is to organize what

volunteers go to Stillwaters Cafe, a ministry of the

Shepherd of the Valley Church on Cochran which

feeds the less fortunate, poor, and the needy every

Thursday. My goal as the Stillwaters Chair is to keep a

steady amount of volunteers every single week and to

hopefully maintain them throughout the entire summer.

There isn't too much to say about myself. Many

of my hobbies seem to be placed around expressing

my feelings through different kinds of art. I also really

enjoy helping people feel better about themselves. For

starters, I am a student graphic designer and I also

volunteer every weekday for the Rancho Simi

Recreational Park District. My hobbies include the

creation of videos and music. I also like to pass the time

playing older video games that I grew up with since I

cherish childhood memories. My points of view on life

itself are very deep, logical, and strong and also are a

large part of who I am. Lastly, I also live a vegan diet

lifestyle.

One of the reasons I love Key Club is that it

promotes positive change in the community and brings

out the potential in many individuals. Key Club stands

as a single gateway for my goal in life: to make a

difference in the world. The many different Key Clubs

support my goal and show that people can have a

feeling inside of them to want to do well in the world.
