FTCOn August 3rd, our officers and our new sponsor loaded up an Expedition and headed to Mineola, Texas for our Fall Training Conference. At the FTC, we were able to learn more about our individ-ual roles as Key Club officers and the Eliminate Project. The series of presenta-tions were very beneficial because we gath-ered a wealth of information. We plan to organize a “Trample Out Tetanus 5K” for January and all proceeds go towards elim-inating maternal/neonatal tetanus, an event suggested by the conference leaders. Also, we were fortunate enough to have the district governor, Luke Broussard, at the FTC. He explained his reasoning behind his Governor’s project which gave us a much better understanding of the desired goal and what we need to do as a club in order to reach the goal.
HIGHWAY CLEANUPWhile the officers were road tripping to Mineola, many of our members were making our two mile stretch of highway beautiful once more. We would like to extend a huge thanks to those who sacri-ficed sleeping in a couple more hours and cleaning up our highway! Members pres-ent include Reid Perry, Tara Smith,Abby Hendricks, Cole Badders, and Victoria Hetrick!
GARDENING Due to the fact that our old sponsor is currently at Carpenter Elementary School, we would like to create a strong relationship between our club and the
school. Carpenter has a program where the kids plant and garden and grow different herbs and vegetables. In order for the gardens to be ready for this year’s kids to start their own garden, something had to be done with the old crops. On August 19-20, our officers spent their evenings pulling weeds and crops from eight garden beds, getting them ready for the fall semester!
FISH CAMPEvery August, NHS puts on an orienta-tion of sorts for incoming freshmen. At Fish Camp, freshmen get to experience a pep rally, get their class schedule, get a tour of the school,, and see everything that NHS has to offer. Prior to the pep rally, NHS organizations set up booths in order to provide information about their respective clubs to the freshmen. It was a great opportunity to explain to students, some who have never even heard of Key Club, what we are all about.
FAMILY SERVICE When tragedy strikes, no matter your relation to the individual, it is important to come together in order to help out as much as possible. A local family with two children recently had their house burn down, and they were left with nothing. One of our officer’s fathers asked us to go to Walmart and get everything that they would need and his company would cover the cost. Although we did not pay for the items, five of our officers and our sponsor gathered all the necessities that a family of four needs: kitchen applianc-es, toiletries, food, bathroom supplies, clothes, and more. It was such a humbling and eye opening experience. We are so very fortunate for all that we have and we seldom realize that in an instant, it all can be gone.
STADIUM CLEANUPOn August 23, the Nacogdoches Dragons had a football scrimmage. What do we do at 8 a.m. on Saturday mornings following a home football game? Why, clean the stadium, of course. Huge thanks to Bryce Barham, Lexie Rocco, Jordan Palmer, Najah Patton, and Sarahbeth Shipp!
SCHEDULESA new school year means new opportuni-ties, new faces, and new class schedules. Key Club members and officers along with Student Council members assisted the Nacogdoches High School counselors in distributing schedules and report cards from the previous year on August 21.
ESLRecently members of the Key Club class were given the opportunity to socialize with members of the English as a Second Lan-guage Class. My ESL experience was a lot more interesting than I expected. The kids actually interacted with me and connected with me as we discussed our lives. Not only did we talk about their moving experiences, but we had the opportunity talk about what we did leisurely. They impressed me because many of them had better grammar than some adults I know. It’s was interesting seeing how much in common we all had, despite the differences in the places we were from.

KIWANISDuring the summer, especially the month of August, officers and members attend-ed the weekly Kiwanis luncheons. Our average attendance was around five Key Clubbers per week. Not only did we get the learn about what their club was doing, but we also had the privilege of getting to know the members of our sponsoring Ki-wanis club. The connections that we form now through Kiwanis can be very beneficial in the future.
SLIP N’ SLIDEIt’s that time of year again! Our Back to School Slip N’ Slide Social will be on Tuesday, September 3! It will start at 6:30 and last until 8:30. It will be at Lexie Rocco’s house. In order to help pay for the water slide, we ask that each member bring $3! Also, Please bring food and drinks to share; this will give you a head start on your hours! Cannot wait to see everyone!
PROJECT SOSEvery year when school begins our community gets together and puts on a fundraising event called Project Supply Our Schools. Project SOS had a “Fill the Bus” event outside of Walmart on August 13. Officers, including Jordan Palmer, Lexie Rocco, Maggie King, and McKenna Skeeters, stood outside of Walmart asking for donations and supplies. All donations and supplies are to benefit underprivi-leged children in Nacogdoches ISD and surrounding areas. Nacogdoches Kiwanis members, LouAnn and Denny Jones, were at event.
FALL RALLYFall Rally is just around the corner! It will be on Saturday, September 28. If you have never been to Fall Rally, I highly suggest you come with us this year! Six Flags shuts down the whole park for Key Club mem-bers from all around Texas-Oklahoma and it is a great experience to meet people with the same passion for service as you!At Fall Rally, they will be doing many things that you do not want to miss! It will be held during Six Flags’ Fright Fest! You will be able to find out this year’s DCON theme and interact with other clubs in the district! Also, this year’s DCON will be April 24-29, 2014! Make sure to mark your calenders! DCON is a favorite Key Club event among many!
SET SAILThe great thing about Key Club class is that the members in the class can provide so many more ideas and incite into topics that our officers just do not always think about. One instance among many this occurred was when our new theme for the 2013-2014 school year was born. We are “retiring” our previous proposed theme of “Color Your Community with Service” and announcing this year’s new theme. Our theme for this year will be... SET SAIL WITH SERVICE. I hope everyone is as excited as we are for this year and our new theme!
