Tauranga Intermediate School Newsletter 15 August 2013 Vol 09 Kia ora / Dear Parents I hope you and your families all had a pleasant winter vacation period. We certainly can’t complain about the winter weather with temperatures being unseasonally warm and no rain. I hope the rain stays away until after the AIMS GAMES in mid September. Dear Parent/Caregiver
Welcome back to Term Three and thank you to the many families that involved themselves in the Student Led Conferences last week. After many conversations with parents, students and teachers once again these were a huge success in cementing the learning partnership between home and school as well as further empowering students to take greater ownership of their learning. We are appreciative of the feedback we have received to date. If you would like to contact us regarding these as well, please feel free to do so at: [email protected] or [email protected]
Congratulations to all students with their high level of projects this year in our annual Science Fair Competition. Many students embeded various forms of technology to either help gather data or help create the end product. A big congratulations to Connor Christoffersen and Cameron Luke who won the National School Gen Solar Oven Challenge, an excellent achievement for both students.
Life Education is again back this term and working with students to provide a range of strategies and support with making positive choices. Life Education prides themselves on a preventative approach. They teach children about the wonder of life, themselves, and other people, with the aim of showing them how to reach their full potential. Life Education does not necessarily work on changing children's behaviour, it works on changing desires. Rather than frightening children with various forms of scare tactics, the Life Education philosophy focuses on creating a sensitivity to values which lead to an understanding and appreciation of others. This enables the child to make decisions about any negative influences that might impede the development of their fullest potential.
In Week Four we will be holding The Dangerous Decibels programme for Year 8’s only. The presentation is about 50 minutes long and uses the principles of inquiry-based learning to teach the concepts of noise-induced hearing loss prevention. Students discover just how important it can be to “Turn it Down!”, “Walk Away” and how to “Protect Ears”. With the help of scientific tools, students measure sound, learn about decibels, and make models of their own ear. They explore sound, the way it travels, and how they can protect their hearing for years to come!
Finally, thanks again for your ongoing support with your child’s learning. Please continue to feel free to pop in at any stage and discuss your child’s learning with their teacher or ourselves. Some key dates to take note of are:
ICAS Testing Mathematics - Tuesday 13th August
Tauranga Girls College Enrollment interviews - Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August
Tauranga Intermediate School Information evening - Wednesday 21st August
Warm regards
Gareth Scholes and Geoff Booth(Academic Deputy Principals)
