advisory board meetings under the Chairmanship of Mr B K Namdeo, former Director Refineries, HPCL. During the board meeting, Mr P D Samudra, Managing Director, Thyssen Krupp Industrial Solutions- India & Technical Chairman, Refinery & Petrochemicals World Expo 2017 proposed having focused session on polymers as this topic is very relevant in Indian context.

India has a great potential to act as a “processing hub” due to the low conversion cost based on
imported feed stocks e.g. Refining Field Combined with this, the Government’s plan to bring in LNG Gas at a cheaper price will lead to spurt in investments in the field of Fertilizers and Petrochemicals, in the long run.

Dr R Ramachandran, Head-South Asia and Chairman, BASF India Pvt Ltd & Chairman, Specialty Chemicals World Expo 2017, presiding over the 3rd Central Advisory Board meeting at The Club in Mumbai
Indian specialty chemicals market stands at USD 30- 40 billion which is far behind China and many other countries where it
is ten times larger. Over the last three central advisory board meetings, the industry leaders have brainstormed over the ideas and structured the conference program which will bring forth the perspectives of end users on their expectations from the specialty chemical manufacturers; thought leaders to discuss their experience on handling the sustainability challenges that need to be addressed through technologies or alternative ways to comply with the changing regulatory norms; deliberate over the latest innovations, research and trends like digitization that would be critical
factor to drive the growth of specialty chemical industry.
Dr Raman Ramachandran, Head South Asia and CMD, BASF India Ltd & Chairman, Specialty Chemicals World Expo 2017 shared that the event will showcase the emerging potential of the industry in India and invited the industry to support the event.
The speakers will reflect on “Water and Waste Management through Technological Interventions” for municipalities, industrial wastewater treatment, tackling the distribution challenges along with international case study on river rejuvenation.
CHEMTECH has also approached various municipal authorities in selected cities and is receiving positive response from towards attending the event and planning to organise a round table discussion between the municipal commissioners with the CXOs of Austrian delegation and Indian companies to discuss application of innovative technologies in the municipal sectors to address the challenges. So far, Dr. Sanjeev Nayyar, Mayor, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Mr P K Gupta,Commissioner, North Delhi Municipal Corporation & Mr. Tara Chand Bansal, Deputy Mayor,North Delhi Municipal Corporation have confirmed their presence for the event. CHEMTECH is awaiting confirmations from other offices and will announce the details about the concurrent round table shortly.
Municipalities Show Interest in WaterEX
National water policy of India has given lot of thrust to municipal and industrial waste water treatment and reuse
which has created ample opportunities for the Indian as well as international companies. Though in terms of market size and opportunities India is a huge market but the expenditure has continued to be low so far. Municipal sewage waste treatment market in India is huge in India. According to some guesstimates, it is only ten percent of waste in rural areas and thirty percent of waste in urban areas is treated. The market for industrial waste water treatment in India is growing at a healthy rate of 10-12 percent per annum and will continue to maintain positive growth momentum.
WaterEX World Expo 2017 and international conference will bring together the experts from end users of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment sectors to interact with the water and waste treatment solution providers. Mr G S Jha, Chairman, Central Water Commission, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India and Technical Chairman, WaterEX World Expo 2017, Mr A B Pandya, former Chairman, Central Water Commission, Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India have been at the helm of structuring the conference program.
Students should select their summer internship program wisely. They should force the
corporates to come up with a meaningful project. Unfortunately, summer internship programs offered by most of the companies are without a structured project and students hardly get a chance to learn anything. What if students get a live project of the real world, independently work under someone mentoring them? that’s what I have been pushing for and we in Reliance have been doing now - A right mentor assigned to every summer intern that comes in, real life problems given to them, they structurally go into the field and then come back and present to the leadership, a meaningful potential solution towards the same.

Student Outreach Program 2017
SOP 2017 Attracts Strong Interest Across Students & Industry
Over hundred students from various Indian engineering colleges have volunteered to work on the forthcoming edition of
Student Outreach Program scheduled to be organised concurrently during CHEMTECH. The students are very excited about the interactive sessions with the industry stalwarts during the Icon Lectures, the opportunity to present their ideas to the industry and explore the internship opportunities that would provide the students the opportunity to work on industry projects in real time.
The members of DECHEMA and VDMA, leading German industry associations are interested in the internship program and looking forward to hire the interns for training in Indian offices and will also hold first round
of interviews to consider hiring them for German operations.
Mr Vipul Shah, COO Petrochemicals, RIL & Chairman SOP 2017 emphasised that industry should encourage the students to work on the real world projects during the summer internship under the mentorship of experts and be educated by the specialists which will be a great step towards creating tomorrow’s workforce. He also appreciated the idea of prototype and poster presentations by the students will give an opportunity to the students to unmask their ideas and present before the industry gurus which can create an impact on betterment of trends in the chemical industry.
Over 2000 students from 50 colleges in India attended the 2015 edition of SOP in Mumbai.
