Question  Asked  • 2013• 2011• 2010• 2009• 2007

Structure:  Paragraphs  by  SRPs

• Introduction  -‐  4• Human  Factors  –  6+• Physical  Factors  -‐  4• General  Comments

Paragraph  1  –  Introduction   SRPS

Name  your  region  –  Greater  Dublin  Area  (GDA)  Name  your  activity  –  Manufacturing  –  1  SRP

Discss  the  two  types  of  manufacturing  –  Traditional  and  Modern

Discuss  exampes  of  types  of  industrys  -‐

Give  examples  of  both  –

Briefly  describe  that  we  have  a  thirving  manufacturing  industry  in  the  GDA  –  Over  one  quarter  of  all  manufacturing  plants  in  the  country  are  located  in  this  region.  Influenced  by  both  human  and  physical  factors

Paragraph  2-‐Human  Factors   SRPS

Note  for  each  factor  –  you  must  name  the  factor,  mention  what  type  of  industry  it  benefits,  give  eamples  where  possible  and  EXPLAIN  HOW  IT  INFLUENCES  THE  MANUFACTURING  INDUSTRY.  Without  this  last  point,  your  SRP  will  not  be  relevant  and  therefore  will  not  be  awarded  marks.

Large  Market  -‐    this  mostly  affects  consumer  industries.  (DEFINE:  industries  which  produce  goods  that  are  bought  by  consumers  for  immediate  use).  Eg.  Food  processing  industry.  The  GDA  has  a  market  of  over  1.2  million  people,  and  so  it  would  be  an  attractive  area  for  people  to  set  up  manufacturing  business.

Transport  System  –  The  GDA  has  an  advanced  radial  road  network.  This  is  attractive  to  manufacters  as  they  can  cut  down  on  transport  time  and  cost  of  inputs  and  outputs.  (E.g.  Trucks  using  M50)

-‐ The  GDA  also  has  the  country’s  largest  international  airport:  Dublin  Airport.  This  is  particularly  attractive  for  light  industry,  e.g.  microchips  as  they  may  export  their  products  by  air.

-‐ For  example,  Intel  in  Leixlip  has  access  to  the  M50  on  its  way  to  Dublin  airport  for  the  export  of  their  goods.

Skilled  Graduates  –  The  GDA  has  four  out  of  the  country’s  seven  university  and  so  has  a  large  pool  of  educated  and  skilled  graudates.  Gradutes  in  engineering,  science  etc.  are  often  preferred  for  the  ICT  manufactering  plants.  Manufacters  often  locate  next  to  universities  etc.  eg  UCD

Government  Incentives  -‐    Ireland  offers  a  12.5%  corportion  tax  which  is  much  lower  than  most  of  our  European  counterparts.  This  makes  us  hugely  attractive  to  MNCs  (DEFINE)  to  locate  in  Ireland.  This  in  turn  increases  the  manufacturing  industry  in  the  GDA.

EU  –  Many  affects  –  free  movement  of  people  and  products.  Access  to  structural  funds  etc.  –  relate.
