Dear Friends,

Our hearts have been troubled by all kinds of violence

and deaths in our country and other countries in the

world. We can see that violence brings more violence.

And it causes more hatred and fear. As Christians, we

are called to promote peace, justice and hope in the

hopeless situations. Let’s take time to pray to God for

the peace of our country and our world. Our bishop Jonathan

Keaton issued a call to pray for an end of violence. I would like

to share his words:

“By now, you have heard reports of several shootings involving

citizens and police in Baton Rouge, La., St. Paul, Minn. and most

recently, Dallas, Texas.

Shooting deaths, families heartbroken, television coverage, sus-

pects killed, fingers pointed, demonstrations and prayers prayed

to Almighty God have challenged the church and the world to

find a better way.

Over and over again, we've learned that violence begets violence.

To protest and change things, we have to choose the better way of

non-violence.

May the God of mercy and peace comfort the living and the dead

in Dallas, Minnesota, Baton Rouge and the human spirit. May

every response to these shocking deaths be that which creates

peace on earth, not war. ‘Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive

those who trespass against us.’

This is my prayer. Will you join me that our prayers might pro-

vide a chorus that provides a way of peace.” - Bishop Jonathan

Keaton

Prophet Micah taught God’s people in the midst of violence:

“What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love

kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”-Micah 6:8

Hopeful in Christ,

Pastor In-Sook

Please have articles for the September 2016

Grace Notes to the church office by August 22.

Circle of Friends Potluck Tuesday– August 9- Noon

Bring a dish and join the fellowship.

Grace Race Farewell

The following paragraph was written by Tony

Miksanek and is from the President’s Message

article in the River to River Running Reporter,

Summer 2016.

“Finally, a shout out to Grace United Methodist Church in

Carbondale and all the wonderful people who have helped with

the Grace Race over the years. By the time you read this col-

umn, the Grace Race will have ‘retired’ after a 25 year run as one

of the most popular and successful 5K’s in southern Illinois his-

tory. We will not forget the food, music, camaraderie, festivities,

door prizes, wonderful volunteers and organizers, fast flat course,

and hot humid Friday nights. You will be greatly missed, Grace

Race! Thanks for the memories.”

It is HOT! As a result, the church electric bill

increased over $500 from the previous month. If

you are using the building for any reason, try to be

as conservative as possible. If a smaller room is

available that you could use rather than cool the

Auditorium, etc., please consider using it. TURN THE AIR

BACK UP when you leave the room.

Thanks from the Trustees!

Our heartfelt sympathy is given to Rachel

Satterwhite on the recent death of her mother,

Kathy Satterwhite Michel.

The Marine Corps Auxiliary is very grate-

ful for the check we sent. They thought the

idea of honoring our fathers by helping our

veterans was a wonderful idea. For some vet-

erans the gifts given by the Auxiliary are the

only ones they receive. The check was very

much appreciated.

(Your Father’s Day donations totaled $790.)

Lay Servant Ministries had its origins

in the early years of Methodism: John

Wesley authorized the use of lay assistants

to preach and conduct worship in the ab-

sence of clergy. Today, there are opportu-

nities to serve Christ’s church and His

people through leading, caring, and com-

municating. Lay Servant Ministries help Christians claim their

spiritual gifts, talents, and skills by offering empowering train-

ing. Lay Servants engage in ministry to others through local

church and district networks of support. Examples of ministries

are leading a Bible class, visiting nursing homes and shut-ins,

pulpit supply, or specialized one-on-one caring. Through procla-

mation of God’s Word, service, and leadership, Lay Servants help

the church follow the Great Commission: Mathew 28:19-20.

Grace UMC has three Certified Lay Servants: Linda Egner,

Roberta DePuy, and John DePuy. If you are interested in becom-

ing a Lay Servant or would just like to take a class, please contact

Pastor In-Sook, or Roberta DePuy, Cache River District Co-

Director Lay Servant Ministries (573-201-6650).
