Every year, the stories we encounter during our photo shoot for A Day in the Life of Port Alberni never cease to surprise me.

This year we had seven photographers shooting from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., or dawn to (almost) dark on Friday, July 19.

My favourite memory of the day has to be my chance encounter with some tourists from Germany.

While taking photos at the Alberni Valley Visitor Information Centre, I met Otto Pawlik and Christa Avemaria, a couple from Germany who have been travelling around North America for nearly two years. I heard Otto ask Bill Collette the chamber of commerce’s executive director, if anyone spoke German. No one in the building happened to be proficient in that language, myself included.

But I have a translation app on my iPhone. So I typed “Are you looking for something in Port Alberni?” in English, and showed Otto the German translation. His face lit into a smile.

No, said Otto, who was sitting on the log bench in the middle of the room. He indicated he was looking at some of his trip photos on his laptop. I asked him, via my translation app, if he would allow me to take his photo for our project and he nodded.

When Christa joined us, the two of them explained in broken English that they had had their recreational vehicle shipped by barge to Halifax from Hamberg, Germany a year ago, and they have been travelling around North America since then. They shared some of their photos from Key West in Florida, Mexico and Watson Lake, in Yukon Territory. They are due to return to Europe in September.

I reluctantly said goodbye and wished them well on the rest of their trip.

While at McLean Mill National Historic Site, I grabbed a quick photo of some children lined up at the railing of one

of the rail cars, just after the steam train pulled into the platform. I learned that some of these children—who are from Austria—have been immortalized on a billboard outside of Nanoose, from a previous visit.

The children in the photo on the front of our publication are (from left): Liam Lindsay, Julianna Pley, Max Schliesselberger, Alexia Lindsay, Justin Lindsay and Sienna Schliesselberger. The Schliesselbergers’ mother is originally from Nanaimo so they return to Canada and visit friends and family every two years.

At 11:30 a.m. I raced back from the mill to West Coast General Hospital, where I photographed the tray line in food services. I watched a team of four efficiently load 64 trays for patients in 20 minutes.

These weren’t simple assembly-line trays, either; each one of them was for a patient with specific dietary needs. Lafern Francoeur started the lineup, reciting each menu. Food services workers Dennis Fagan (soups and salads) and Shirley Kisilewich (liquids and desserts) loaded the trays, while Anna Stefiuk checked contents

against menu and put everything on the trolley for delivery.

Working a 12-hour shift, I had the opportunity to see a lot of Port Alberni residents and visitors at work and at play. As my day was winding down, and I headed to Harbour Quay to take advantage of some beautiful light at the end of the day, I found my pace slowing to a similar rate of people enjoying a beautiful evening on the breakwater and at Spirit Square.

I discovered a little gem, thanks to fellow photographer Charmead Schella, in a country band that plays several evenings at Harbour Quay starting at 7 p.m. People in lawn chairs gathered around the jam session, while others danced in a cosy corner of Spirit Square, throwing shadows across the cobblestones in tune with the setting sun.

I hope you enjoy our glimpse of this day as much as I did.

of these children, it’s because they are also featured on a billboard for McLean Mill—also aboard the steam train.
