Sr. Mary Kerber, SSND Mission Appeal Speaker Sr. Mary Kerber is a School Sister of Notre Dame who lives in St Paul and is a member of the SSND Province of Africa. She worked in the African missions for 31 years. Sister will speak at the Church of the Epiphany the weekend of August 28 and 29. The SSND Province of Africa is composed of 85 Sisters serving in 5 countries in Africa. Of the 85 members, 71 are African women who have joined the Congregation, Your contributions will be used for SSND missions in The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya. One of their greatest needs is support for the education and professional
training of their African Sisters, as well as the formation of young women joining the Congregation. Your support helps the Sisters continue their significant work among the poor. If you are writing a check for the collection, please make it out to Church of the Epiphany with a notation of “SSND” or “Missions.” Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Alaska 2021 This year 11 of us went to Alaska to fish at the end of July. We had a great trip, made new friends, and caught a lot of fish! The last picture on the right, is of two girls along the river who were delighted at their catch. There is something about Alaska that brings out the joy in life! Is this something that should be on your bucket list? Fr. Dufner
Gathering Hymn The Church’s One Foundation —CR575 1 The Church's one Foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the word: From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy Bride; With His own blood he bought her, And for her life He died.
2 Elect from every nation,
Yet one o'er all the earth, Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one Faith, one Birth; One holy Name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued.
Greeting
Celebrant: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. R: Amen. Celebrant: The Lord be with you. R: And with your spirit.
Penitential Rite
Celebrant: Brethren, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
R: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers an sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue: therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Celebrant: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. +
Kyrie Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word
First Reading Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b
Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, summoning their elders, their leaders, their judges, and their officers. When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed all the people: “If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods. For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among the peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”
Lector: The Word of the Lord R: Thanks Be To God
Responsorial Psalm Ps 34:2-3, 16-21 R: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
Second Reading Eph 5:21-32 Brothers and sisters: Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.
Lector: The Word of the Lord R: Thanks Be To God
Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Gospel Jn 6:60-69
Celebrant: The Lord be with you. R: And with your spirit. Celebrant: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. R: Glory to you, O Lord.
Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”
As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”
Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. R: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily
Prayer of the Faithful R: Lord, hear our prayer.

R: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for good and the good of all his holy Church.

Memorial Acclamation
Celebrant: The mystery of faith. R: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
Celebrant: Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever. R: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer
Lamb of God Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Holy Communion
Prayer for making a Spiritual Communion (if you are at home) At Thy feet, O my Jesus, I prostrate myself and I offer Thee the repentance of my contrite heart, which is humbled in its nothingness and in Thy holy presence. I adore Thee in the Sacrament of Thy love, the ineffable Eucharist. I desire to receive Thee into the poor dwelling that my heart offers Thee. While waiting for the happiness of sacramental Communion, I wish to possess Thee in spirit. Come to me, O my Jesus, since I, for my part, am coming to Thee! May Thy love embrace my whole being in life and in death. I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee. Amen.
Communion Hymn: O Sacrament Most Holy —CR361
Second collection will be for Epiphany’s Debt Reduction. Sending Hymn: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling —CR563
1 Love divine, all love excelling, Joy of heaven, to earth come down! Fix in us Thy humble dwelling: All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art: Visit us with Thy salvation, Enter every trembling heart.
2 Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit; Let us find the promised rest. Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be. End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.
