Greetings and thanks to all our friends who recognize the value and strength of investing in Mary Lanning Healthcare. We are managing precious resources to keep our hospital strong and we sincerely thank you and your family for choosing our hospital for joint replacements, tests and new babies. Your friendship has never been more important!

People like you have sustained the vision of William and Alice Lanning for more than 105 years. They established a hospital in loving remembrance of their only child, Mary. On her three-day train ride home from Smith College during her sophomore year, Mary contracted typhoid. She developed symptoms and died a few weeks later on Jan. 10, 1910. There were no hospitals in Hastings, so the Lanning family announced their intention to build and endow a hospital in Mary’s honor, with hope that future families might avoid similar tragedies.

This is the story of Mary Lanning that forever changed thousands of lives and created a healthcare center that stands as a leader of the region’s economic stability.

Members of the Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors love telling the stories of how our

hospital has helped families and how grateful patients and their families have responded. During the recent COVID-19 spread, manufacturing friends of MLH stepped forward to donate personal protective equipment (PPE). Seamstresses created more than 1,000 homemade masks for non-medical hospital employees. Area restaurants donated food to healthcare workers. Business leaders designated charitable gifts to help where needed most at the hospital or clinics.

These many stories of support are woven together to become part of our history.

Mike Geis is the Thompson & Associates professional who is

doing great work with friends of Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation. He helps

donors create wills that reflect who and what matters most to them. The Foundation Board of Directors is proud to offer this value-added process free of charge to friends of the hospital. Here are what two employees, Ron Meyer and Pat Kern, are saying about their experience with Mike and the process.

Ron Meyer is the Customer Advocate at MLH and is a strong team member, especially in times of change. He was recognized in 2013 with the Caring Kind Award, based on his gregarious personality and a sincere regard for Mary Lanning Healthcare’s tradition of outstanding nursing care.

Pat Kern was named the 2019 Gallup Manager of the Year. As Director of Social Services at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Pat and his team deal with many hospital departments to find solutions for patients.

Thank you to friends who supported the Shower the Home project to refresh the kitchen appliances and furnishings throughout the dining room and living room. Charitable gifts from the Hastings Community Foundation, the Hastings Evening Lions Club and Sunnyside Board of Directors, as well as 81 businesses and households, raised more than $50,000 to update furnishings that were purchased when the Home opened more than 20 years ago.

“The next step is replacing the kitchen floor,” says Stacy McShane, Supervisor of the Home Away From Home.

The Home is a medical hospitality house across the street from the hospital. Mary Lanning Healthcare patients and family members may call (402) 460-5858 to reserve a room or a suite at affordable rates.

For the last eight years, Hastings College Pink Night has been a wildly successful show of support for cancer patients in the Hastings and surrounding communities. On Oct. 2, 2019, the Hastings College volleyball team hosted its annual Pink Night game against Concordia University. Several Mary Lanning Healthcare employees were there to show their support and enjoy an evening of prizes, competition and support for local cancer care.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors hosted the 28th annual charity gala, The Stars Come Out, Aug. 17, at the Lochland Country Club. Doors opened at 5:30 p.m. for a cocktail hour with silent auction viewing, followed by an elegant buffet, recognition ceremony and an exciting live auction.

Monte Rasmussen, master of ceremonies and past board president, led the program. Jeff Kully, President of the Board, presented Lanning Awards

to Barbara and David Fisher and Ruth Koepke. The Foundation established the Lanning Award in 2010 to honor those whose support of, and commitment to, Mary Lanning’s mission exemplifies the Lanning vision.

The celebration included 28 corporate sponsors, who helped create a stellar celebration and contributed $33,559. Proceeds from the gala were directed to support the Endowment Fund at the Foundation.

The Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation hosted the 19th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, June 10, 2019, at Lochland Country Club. Thirty-six teams filled the course for a day of great golf, prizes, food and support for our locally-owned hospital.

Proceeds of $23,563 were designated to the purchase of a treadmill for the cardiac rehabilitation department as well as several lift chairs for use throughout the hospital.

Board member John Hill and his wife, Jan, hosted the 2019 Christmas party for members of the Frahm Legacy Society. Established by the Foundation’s board in 2016, the Frahm Legacy Society recognizes and strengthens financial support.

Claus and Thomas Frahm were neighbors of William and Alice Lanning. The Lanning family built and endowed the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in 1915. The Frahm brothers recognized the value of a locally owned hospital and generously invested in the infrastructure and the endowment.

Donors qualify for membership when they name Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation in their will or other planned gift, or when their lifetime giving meets a threshold of $10,000 per household or $25,000 for organizations.
