It is my honor to serve as your President this year. Past President Chris Radeff has left you with a healthy, vibrant Bar Association, for which I and the new Executive Committee thank her.
My background is a career in private practice, the last decade (or more) of which has been here in Jef-ferson County at the law firm of Boatright, Ripp & Lusk. When not practicing law, I can be found tele-mark skiing (sometimes in the wee hours of the morning with a headlamp) or river surfing (yes, there is such a thing).
I thank my partner, Tom Ripp, and my wife, Autumn, for their encouragement and support as I embark on this year of leadership of your 1st JD Bar Association.
I look forward to helping your 1st JD Bar Association to achieve its purposes, which are to enhance the practice of law within Jefferson County and Gilpin County, to promote professionalism and the admin-istration of justice, to encourage legal education, to uphold the honor and dignity of the bar, to cultivate cordial relations among the legal community of Jefferson County and Gilpin County, to perpetuate the history of the profession and the memory of its members, to facilitate and improve the provision of legal services to the community, and to administer the budget for professional, social and community-oriented purposes.
As you may recall, your website (AnnMarie Spain, Website Committee Chair) was revamped in order to assist in communications with members and the community. Recently, we have added a “Find a Law-yer” page, which will allow you to add your practice and contact information. For a small fee, you can purchase an “Enhanced” profile to include even more helpful information for referrals. The website in-cludes a calendar of events and more information about the 1st JD. Our monthly publication, The Procla-mation, is posted on the website. I encourage you to peruse the website for more information about what the 1st JD has to offer.
Your CLE Committee (Steve Cook, Chair) has a fantastic lineup of programs for you in the coming year. As in past years, you will have the option of purchasing lunch with the program, or bringing your own brown bag (with the exception of the Judges’ Roundtable). The Judges’ Roundtable Luncheon is sched-uled for August 24. Please consult the website for details about this and other upcoming CLEs.
Your Banquet Committee (Sherene Stenger and Kim Sparks, Co-Chairs) has scheduled the Judges and Awards Banquet at a new venue this year. The event will take place at Red Rocks Country Club on Sat-urday, September 15.
Your Golf Committee (Jon Bradley, Chair) has put together a tournament scheduled Columbus Day at Hiwan Golf Club. Proceeds will be donated to Court Support Jeffco.
I encourage you to reach out to me or any of your Board or Committee members if you have an interest in becoming involved in the organization, or if you have insight into how we can better serve our mem-bers and the legal community.

District Court Judge Morris B. Hoffman, County Court Judge Thomas E. Vance, and Magis-trate Lisa M. Gomez are the honorees for the Colorado Judicial Institute’s 2018 Judicial Excellence Awards. The annual awards honor innovation and effectiveness in Colorado’s state courts. The CJI Awards Committee Chair Justice Michael Bender (retired) thanks the many nominators who took the time to submit a nominee. “CJI wouldn’t hear about the dedicated, talented judges across our state without their participation in the awards process,” said Bender. A graduate of the University of Colorado, District Court Judge Morris B. Hoffman, has served in the 2nd judicial district since 1990. County Court Judge Thomas E. Vance graduated from the Uni-versity of Denver and served as a Jefferson County magistrate for ten years before becom-ing a Jefferson County judge in 2004. Magistrate Lisa M. Gomez was a guardian ad litem in the Denver courts before taking the bench in the Denver Juvenile Court three years ago. In addition to the Judicial Excellence Awards, CJI will recognize outgoing judicial officers Colorado Su-preme Court Chief Justice Nancy E. Rice and Colorado Court of Appeals Chief Judge Alan M. Loeb with Judicial Leadership Awards. All five of this year’s honorees will be recognized at the Judicial Excel-lence for Colorado Dinner on October 18, 2018, at the Hilton Denver City Center Hotel, 1701 Califor-nia Street. Information on sponsoring a table at the event is on the CJI website at www.coloradojudicialinstitute.org/dinner-sponsorship-information. Individual seats for this event can be purchased at www.coloradojudicialinstitute.org/dinner-seat-reservation-information.
