The past 5 years have revealed a major shift in the way Americans think about marriage. In 2015 the US Supreme Court ruled that marriage and its legal benefits are guaranteed by the Constitution to same-sex partners. At the General Convention of the Episcopal Church of that same year the Church voted to extend marriage to same-sex couples and approved a liturgy for such marriages. For couples in committed, life-long same-sex relationships and those who support them this ruling was a source of great joy. For others, the decisions seemed confusing or out of line with their beliefs on marriage. For us at St. John’s we now have an opportunity to discern how we will respond to these changes. In the Diocese of Texas, churches who have gone through a discernment period and studied the supporting theological and liturgical documents on same sex marriage may petition the Bishop Diocesan (the Rt. Rev. C. Andrew Doyle) to be allowed to perform same sex marriages in their churches, following all other canons and rules regarding marriage. (As a priest in this

Los últimos 5 años han revelado un gran cambio en el manera en que los Americanos piensan del matrimonio. En 2015 el Corte Supremo del EE.UU. dictaminó que el matrimonio y sus beneficios son garantizados por la Constitución a parejas del mismo sexo. En el Convención General de la Iglesia Episcopal en el mismo año, la iglesia votó a extender el matrimonio a parejas del mismo sexo y aprobó una liturgia por estos matrimonios. We know that there is a diversity of opinion within St. John’s on this issue, just as we have a diversity of members from different races, countries, genders, and sexual orientations. Some will enthusiastically support providing this rite to our same-sex couples. Others will be distressed, even opposed. The goal of this discernment is not to tell some people their beliefs are right and tell other people they are wrong. One of the strengths and beauties of our Episcopal and Anglican Church is that we allow for a diversity of opinions within mainstream Christianity. Different people can have different opinions on topics and still be considered beloved, faithful Christians. The goal of our discernment will be to teach, hear one another, and provide accurate and comprehensive information to the Vestry and myself so that they can make a decision on this issue. We are undertaking this discernment now because we should not wait until a same-sex couple requests such a marriage. Were we to do that, the discussion would focus too much attention on a couple seeking a blessing of their life-long commitment. Instead, we are taking the time to have a discussion and decision before we are approached. The final decision will be made by the Vestry and myself. Although it seems like a simple yes or no question, in reality we could choose from a range of options from outright denial to enthusiastic and public support. At the end of the process of discernment, the Senior Warden and myself must write to the Bishop and either request permission to perform same-sex marriages or inform him we have decided otherwise. The plan and proposed timeline for this discernment process are found in another article in this newsletter. This timeline may be lengthened, if needed, to allow enough time for people to express their opinions.

It’s August, and it’s hot, and it’s time to take a deep breath before the many exciting activities starting in September. But I want to extend my most sincere gratitude to everyone who planned, helped with, and attended the Independence Celebration and Picnic. It was a wonderful success and bridging experience. We had over 85 people in attendance from our morning and afternoon services and our refugee families! This is  only the beginning of a bright future for St. John’s as we enter our second decade as a multi-cultural and multi-lingual Faith Community. Thank you all again for accepting the challenge with such fun and enthusiasm!

Es agosto, y hace calor, y es hora de tomar un respiro profundo antes de las muchas actividades emocionantes a partir de septiembre. Pero quiero extender mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos los que planearon, ayudaron y asistieron a la celebración de la independencia y picnic. Fue un éxito maravilloso y una oportunidad hacer puentes. ¡Teníamos más de 85 personas en asistencia de nuestros misas por la mañana y por la tarde y nuestras familias de refugiados! La iglesia siempre ha tenido conflictos y los ha superado por nuestro amor mutual de Jesucristo. While any potential conflict is very scary in a church, I am confident that our mutual love and understanding and our pride in diversity will ensure that we can have this discussion without damaging our mutual love and respect. The church has always had conflicts and overcome them through our mutual love of Jesus Christ. In the first decades of the church, a huge conflict erupted over whether the message of Jesus’ salvation was meant for gentiles as well as Jews (see Galatians 2:1-10). The conflict threatened to split the Christian church less than 20 years after Christ’s resurrection. Through mutual prayer and discernment they found a way to overcome this conflict. I know we will do the same. Please participate in this process. Come to the teaching and discussion sessions. Provide input via the many different ways that you can comment. The most important thing I ask of you as your Rector is that you listen respectfully and speak the truth respectfully as you believe God has spoken to you. Let us boldly listen to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our Church and in our Parish!

Practicing Mustard Seed Faith/Fe del Granito de Mostaza

El Granito de Mostaza es uno de mis himnos favoritos en español. Usualmente, nos cantamos en el final de la misa. Es muy animado y lleno de alegría. Cuando estoy al fondo de la iglesia, hay muchas veces en que me baila y me aplauda a la música. La melodía exuberante proclama que, si tienes la fe de un granito de mostaza, puede decirle a las montañas para moverse y se moverán; decir a los enfermos a ser sanados y se sanarán. La parábola de Jesús y este himno compañero nos recuerdan que una cosa pequeña puede crear algo grande.

Recuerdo "Los Problemas" en Irlanda del norte en la década de 1970, cuando los vecinos estaban en guerra entre sí. Dos mujeres, dijo, "¡basta!" Sus llamamientos apasionados para el final de la violencia han tocado miles de personas y se nació un movimiento por la paz. Algunos argumentan que su influencia era mínima en el mejor. Sin embargo, ellas trajeron una voz que es recordada como el comienzo de la paz en Irlanda del norte.

One of my favorite hymns in Spanish is La Granita de Mostaza (The Mustard Seed). We usually sing it at the end of the service. It’s very lively and joyful. I often end up dancing and clapping to it at the back of the church. The exuberant tune proclaims that if you have the faith of a mustard seed, you can tell the mountains to move and they will move; tell the sick to be healed and they will be healed. Jesus’ parable and this companion hymn remind us that one small thing can create something big.

I remember “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, back in the 1970’s, when neighbors were at war with each other. Two women said, “Enough!” Their impassioned appeal for the end of violence struck a chord with thousands of people and a peace movement was born. Some argue that their influence was minimal at best. Yet, they brought a voice that is remembered as the beginning of peace in Northern Ireland.

We, at St. John’s, are choosing to be a voice for acceptance and inclusion. Our parish is very diverse. Our parishioners have different origins, abilities and disabilities, sexual orientations, and perspectives of the world. We have fifth generation Texans exchanging stories with first generation immigrants from Mexico. We welcome and develop friendships with refugees from the Middle East. An outsider could observe that we are a community of believers who “walk the talk.”

Like the mustard seed, we are one small community. Yet, we can be an example of how people from many different world-views can

become a vibrant, life-giving spiritual force. Yes, we know that we have a lot to learn about how to do this. And yes, we know that we are not perfect.

But --- we have that mustard seed of hope that enables us to keep on. We have the desire to learn from and share each other’s cultures. We have the confidence to make our community more accessible to people with disabilities. Our hospitality enables us to invite our neighbors to join us for our festival events and to grow gardens with us. We have the curiosity and conviction to participate in difficult conversations so that we can learn from each other and find areas of reconciliation.

All it takes is faith the size of a mustard seed. And, thanks be to God, we have it!

mundo pueden convertirse en una fuerza espiritual vibrante y vivificadora. Sí, sabemos que tenemos mucho que aprender acerca de cómo hacerlo. Y sí, Sabemos que no somos perfectos.

Pero---tenemos ese granito de mostaza de esperanza que nos permite continuar. Tenemos el deseo de aprender y compartir nuestras diversas culturas. Tenemos la confianza para que nuestra comunidad puede ser más accesible para personas con discapacidad. Nuestra hospitalidad nos permite invitar a nuestros vecinos a unirse a nosotros para nuestros eventos festival y cultivar jardines juntos. Tenemos la curiosidad y la convicción para participar en conversaciones difíciles por lo que podemos aprender unos de otros y encontrar espacios de reconciliación.

Refugee Ministry/Ministerio de refugiados

On July 8th, two of our refugee families joined us at our 4th of July Picnic: our first Afghani family (the Shahs) and our most recent Afghani family (the Safis). Ahmad brought Hewad, Jawad, Sajjad, Zaki, and Zakria (Basmina, Mariam, Atihad, and Fawad stayed home). John and I brought the Safi family, Farzana, Roma, Romal, Irfan, and Sahar (Omid was at work). Everyone had a great time, and though there were a couple of upset little ones, part of it was due to not understanding what was going on because Irfan and Sahar don’t speak English or Spanish. Luckily, Ahmad and his boys helped to translate from English to Pashto as needed during the picnic.

El 8 de julio, dos de nuestras familias de refugiados nos acompañaron en nuestro Picnic celebrando el dia de la independencia: nuestra primera familia de Afghani (the Shahs) y nuestra familia de Afghani más reciente (Safis). Ahmad llevó Hewad, Jawad, Sajjad, Zaki, and Zakria (Basmina, Mariam, Atihad, and Fawad quedaron en casa). John y yo trajimos a la familia Safi Farzana, Roma, Romal, Irfan, and

Sahar (Omid estuvo en el trabajo.) Cada uno se divirtió. Hubo un par de niños pequeños que no entendían y estaban confundidos de lo que estaba pasando porque Irfan y Sahar no hablan inglés o español. Two notable things came up during the picnic. When we moved inside the Parish Hall for the Cake Walk, Jawad mentioned that he remembered coming to St. John’s for a dinner reception when his family first moved to Austin. When asked what he remembered most about it, he said, “Ice cream. I still love ice cream.” Secondly, and something I don’t think many people noticed, Farzana came with her children, but her husband wasn’t there. This is very different. Usually an Afghani woman does not go places where other men will be without being accompanied by her husband. The Safis seem to be very comfortable around us, and that speaks a lot about the people of St. John’s!

In other news, Omid now has a job working at a company called Flex working on building electronics parts for telecom towers. At this time, he takes 2-3 buses to get to work out at Anderson Mill and works the 2pm-10pm shift. Unfortunately, fewer buses run at night, and if he misses the first bus, he doesn’t get home until 2am! Luckily, he has finished his online test for a driver’s license, and as soon as paperwork needed to get the license comes in, I will be taking him over to DPS to get the license. It will sure help him out a lot if he could drive to and from work.

Ahmad also has a new job. First he worked as a bellhop at the Marriott downtown. Then he and his brother started working as drive-share drivers. Now, Ahmad has started his own business--a small used-car business.

Thanks to Susan Davis donating a sewing machine, Farzana has made several of these floor level sofas.

The Refugee Ministry still has a few volunteer jobs coming up with the Safis. We are also helping another Afghani gentleman who just arrived and had very little done in the way of

We have a new Seminarian! Her name is Minerva Skeith. She will start in August!   Minerva Camarena Skeith is a native of Laredo, Texas and is fluent in both English and Spanish.  She moved back to Austin in 1998 and married her husband Paul Skeith in 1999.  They have two sons.  Their oldest, Samuel just turned 14 years old and will attend high school next school year.  Augustin is 11 years old and will attend middle school next school year.  Her husband was ordained a priest in 2017 and has been leading the SoCo Episcopal Community for the last three years.

Minerva is a postulant of the Diocese of Texas and her sending parish is St. David’s Episcopal Church in Austin.  Prior to becoming a postulant and attending the Seminary of the Southwest, she was active in her children’s elementary school and at St. David’s.  She served on the board of the PTA and the Campus Advisory Committee.  She also served on the vestry of St.

Minerva Camarena Skeith nació en Laredo, Texas y habla inglés y español.  Regresó a Austin en 1998 y se casó con su esposo Paul Skeith en 1999.  Ellos tienen dos hijos.  Samuel acaba de cumplir 14 años y empieza la preparatoria el proximo año escolar.  Augustin tiene 11 años y empieza la secundaria el proximo año escolar.  Su esposo fue ordenado un sacerdote en 2017 y ha dirigido la Comunidad Episcopal de SoCo por los últimos tres años.

Mission Sunday Thanks/La Misión del Domingo Gracias

First, I want to thank all of you who participated in our Mission Sunday projects on May 21. Rather than just praying for an abstract group of homeless, elderly, and mentally challenged people, we physically reached out and touched real people who needed our help. However, there were many people who could not participate because of scheduling or other concerns.

In order to increase our attendance and interest in Mission Sunday, I need your help. We need suggestions for new projects so that we don’t simply do the same things over and over. Suggestions for any format changes that might increase our participation would also be helpful. For example, one suggestion has been to do the Mission Sunday projects at different times during the week and then have Mission Sunday at the church as more of a celebration of what we accomplished during the week rather than attempting to do all the projects at the same time on Sunday.

I believe Mission Sunday is a mission worth doing and I would like for us to do it well. So, all comments and suggestions will be gratefully accepted. Contact me at 512-836-9694 or [email protected].

Primero, quiero agradecer a todos los que participaron en nuestros proyectos de la misión del domingo 21 de mayo. En lugar de orar sólo para un grupo abstracto de personas sin hogar, ancianos y mentalmente desafiados, físicamente se acercó y tocó personas reales que necesitan nuestra ayuda. Sin embargo, hubo mucha gente que no pudo participar debido a problemas de programación o de otros.

Para aumentar nuestra atención e interés en la misión del domingo, necesito su ayuda. Necesitamos sugerencias para nuevos proyectos por lo que simplemente no hacen las mismas cosas una y otra vez. Sugerencias para los cambios de formato que pueden aumentar nuestra participación también sería útiles. Por ejemplo, una suposición ha debido hacer los proyectos del domingo de la Misión en tiempos diferentes durante la semana y luego tener la Misión el domingo en la iglesia como más de una celebración de lo que llevamos a cabo durante la semana más bien que intentar hacer todos los proyectos al mismo tiempo el domingo.

It is that time of year again: we are again in need of school supplies for those children who aren’t able to buy what they need.

School will start for most schools on or about August 21. We will concentrate on elementary school supplies. We will be collecting the supplies through the month of August, in order to provide them to the schools for students. If you do not like to shop for the supplies, you can contribute cash or a check, and I will purchase them. June 2017 had a deficit of $180.71. The monthly receipts (a 29.1% increase from last month) and disbursements (a 13.4% increase) were higher. The year-to-date average monthly receipts are $16,358.65; disbursements, $15,477.84. Giving statements as of June 30th will be emailed before the end of July. Please let me know of any discrepancies. Wednesday Service/Misa de Miércoles

Since the beginning of this year, attendance at our Wednesday, 7pm service has been extremely poor. Three out of four Wednesdays no one comes. This service does take the energy of myself, the Altar Guild, and servers to prepare. That energy can best be spent elsewhere if there is no interest in the service. I will continue the service through August, but if attendance remains the same we will cancel the service beginning in September.

Desde la empieza de este año, la asistencia de nuestra misa de 7pm en miércoles ha sido muy pocos. Nadie viene por tres de cada cuatro miércoles. La misa toma la energía de yo mismo, la Cofradía del Altar, y los acólitos para preparar. Esta energía puede ser mas útil en otros asuntos si no hay interés en la misa. Continuaré la misa hasta agosto, pero si la asistencia queda lo mismo, cancelaremos la misa empezando en septiembre.

Jamaica Fest Donations Needed!Jamaica Fest ¡Necesitamos Donaciones!

Our annual Jamaica Fest this year takes place on September 9, 2017.

Due to the popularity of the Cake Walk at our Independence Day Picnic and Field Day celebration, we plan on two different cake walks for Jamaica. One for adults only and one for children only. We need cake donations for the Adult Cake Walk. For the children’s version, we would appreciate donations of cupcakes and/or cookies. This was such a fun event. Please join us and walk your way to a cake!

Debido a la popularidad del Paseo del Pastel en nuestro Picnic del Día de la Independencia y celebración del Día de Campaña, planeamos dos paseos del pastel diferentes para Jamaica.
