I welcome everyone back . . . and extend a special welcome to all our new fine arts educators in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis! In my first letter of the year, I want to remind everyone (and let the new faces know) that as the Director of Fine Arts, I am here as a resource to you. It is my job to help improve, continue, or start building strong art, music, and theater programs in our schools.

Each month, I publish the Fine Arts Adventure newsletter to inform the fine arts teachers of the Archdiocese of their colleagues’ events and to present opportunities for students and teachers. I also send out frequent e-mails as opportunities arise so that everyone has a chance to take advantage of the great resources available in the St. Louis area. Please send information on your school’s programs and events to be included in the newsletter throughout the year!

Complete and return the enclosed Fine Arts Report as soon as you can. This report will help update my contact lists. If you request, your name will be included in a directory of all fine arts teachers (to be sent out only to Catholic school fine arts teachers later this semester). Completing this report helps me keep in contact with you so I can better support you and your school. The directory is a great resource you can use to contact your colleagues around your region for support and help,

I love visiting schools and your programs. Please invite me at any time! I am happy to come to your programs or see your classroom and students in action. I can be that fresh set of eyes and ears that can give feedback on your ideas as you continue to work to improve your classroom. Friendly advice from a colleague is always helpful!

Have you been looking for a way to talk to your colleagues more, ask them questions and bounce ideas around because you are the only fine arts teacher in your school? Join the new St. Louis Catholic Fine Arts Educators Facebook Group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1340427772722747/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel . The page has been established for you to get help and advice from your colleagues. Please join, and post questions, suggestions, and pictures of everything you do or need help with. Follow me on Twitter (@kenlederle) and Pinterest (www.pinterest.com/kenlederle). I hope to highlight our schools’ great programs, and make everyone aware of new ideas and opportunities sooner!

Please, always feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, and good news! God bless you this year! Kenneth Lederle, Director of Fine Arts 314.792.7324 [email protected]

Elements of Art/ Principals of Design Book Grades 6-8

https://stocktonvapa.wordpress.com/2008/07/25/1st-project-for-junior-high/ Applicable Common Core Standard: L8 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-

specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge with considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression

Applicable National Core Art Standard (NCAS): Cr2.3.7a Apply visual organizational strategies to design and produce a work of art that clearl communicates information or ideas.

Objectives: 1. Students will .design books that will describe the Elements of Art and Principals of Design.

Materials:

Colored pencils Things that make subtle texture, like string or bits of rice or cut up straws 42” x 6“ strips (1 per student) made from thick paper Templates of different shapes large enough to cover most of a page of the book

Procedure: 1. Begin by explaining each of the elements of art or principles of design, or have students break into groups

and have each group explain one of them so that students have an understanding of the elements of art/principles of design before they begin the book.

2. Accordion fold the paper into 16 4”x6” sections

3. On the first section, write “Elements of Art” (this is the cover page).

4. Skip the second section. On the third section, write “Line” at the top of the page. Trace the template onto the center of the page and fill it up with types of lines.

5. Skip the next section. Continue with one blank page and one page filled with each of the elements of art: line, color, shape, value, space, form, and texture.

6. Flip the book over. On the back of the last element of art, write “Principles of Design” and again, alternating 1 page filled, one page empty, trace the template onto each page. Fill in the shape with decorations that express that principle of design. (Because it is the back of the accordion, you will find that you can only fit 6 principles, so do two on the same page).

7. The goal is to have a book that, when opened one way shows all the elements of art, and when turned around will list all the principles of design.

More Than Just the ABC’s Grades K-5

http://denverartmuseum.org/edu/lesson/more-just-abc-s

Applicable Common Core Standard: RL7 Make connections between the text and a visual presentation of text.

Applicable National Core Art Standard (NCAS): Cr2.1.4a Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.

Objectives:

1. Students will identify the words in Association, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco. 2. Students will explain ideas or feelings inspired by the shapes of the letters and the choice of colors in Wes Wilson’s

poster. 3. Students will feel comfortable enough to create their own unique letters and message to the best of their ability will and work in small groups to complete a task.

Materials:

Magazines brightly colored contact paper X-acto knife or scissors 11x14 or 11x17 sheets of paper (two for every three students) Crayons Projection or prints of Association, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco by Wes Wilson Music to play during class of the bands listed in the painting. Bands include: The Association, Along Comes Mary,

Quicksilver, Messenger Service, and Grassroots.

Procedure:

1. Show or distribute color copies of the poster. Lead a large group

discussion on the artistry of the letters. What does the image communicate? Before they spend much time to read it, ask what it might be advertising. What do they notice about how Wes Wilson’s lettering? What feelings or thoughts does his lettering invoke?

2. Share that Wilson hand-drew all of the lettering and worked as though he were removing space to create letters (as though he were cutting out a block for print making). Wilson says: “I like to do my work freehand — no ruler and stuff. Just make it fit naturally. If I needed to make a letter a little wider, well, I would.”

3. Decipher what the letters say and what they are advertising. Discuss the impact of the “hot” colors.

4. Have students look around the room and select at least two different objects. Ask them to sketch the word “art” using the objects to help inspire shapes for the letters (e.g., a light bulb could inspire more rounded shapes). If you can, play music from the bands listed on the poster while they work on their letters. When they are finished, have them share their words with a partner.

5. Talk about the importance of lettering and how letters are used to communicate words but also can be used for artistic purposes.

6. Tell older elementary students that they will be working individually to cut out letters from contact paper; younger students can use crayons to

hand-draw letters). They should think about their classmates and select one word that would speak to their audience (or that they think their audience would like). Adjust as needed for age. Allow them time to design and cut out the letters and arrange them in their word.

7. Share their finished products in groups or with the entire class.
