06Comments fromthe 2013 Chair of the Board

Page 6: August 2013

For most of my career, I have been responsible for marketing and promoting abusiness, a cause, or a product. I’ve always gone back to one of my favoritequotes when I hear people discuss the pros and cons of spending money onmarketing and/or advertising.

“In good times, people want to advertise; in bad times, they have to.” BruceBarton

One of the best and most economical ways to market and promote yourbusiness is through your chamber of commerce. I won’t bore you with mythoughts on the economy, but I can tell you this it’s times like this that a chambermembership can be worth its weight in gold.

Utilizing member only discounts, access to the chamber website to marketspecial services and events, small business education and events, and staff toadvocate on a state and national basis for business, are just some of the reasons Ibelieve a chamber membership is priceless...especially in these times.

As with any good investment, the more you work with it and nurture it, themore it will grow. So it is with the Albany Area Chamber. The more involved we all are with OUR chamber, themore we all will get from our investment in Albany’s business community.

Another quote I like is “Too many people go through life waiting for things to happen instead of makingthem happen”. Let’s make Albany thrive, grow, and prosper by MAKING it happen.

This month we are conducting a Chamber Membership Drive and our theme is “Let’s Grow Together.” Manyof your neighbors are signed up to help recruit new chamber members August 27th and 28th. We need yourhelp to spread the word. Tell your friends and business associates about the Albany Area Chamber. Let themknow why you joined and encourage them to grow with us. Share with them that you are a part of makinggood things happen in Albany and you welcome them to join us. Our goal is 200 new business members andwe’re going to make it happen.

If you are a member, thank you. If you are tired of waiting for things to happen and want to be a part ofmaking them happen, then join us. Call Mary Bickerstaff today to find out more at 434-8700.

federal government on issues that affect our community.

Through the Military Affairs Committe the Chamber uses its voice often and loudly in support of Marine Corps LogisticsBase Albany. MCLB Albany employs approximately 5,000 individuals and has an ecomomic impact of over $1 billion each

year. The Chamber has asked local businesses to offer discounts to thoseemployees at the base that have lost wages through furloughs implemented bythe US Government.

The Chamber’s Small Business Resource Committee works diligently toenhance the business atmosphere for small businesses in our area. Programs suchas “Lunch and Learns”, 24/7 marketing through the website and networkingopportunities such as Business Expo, Small Business Week, Rise N ShineBreakfasts and Business Afters Hours the Albany Area Chamber helps smallbusiness thrive.

The Education Committee is ramping up to foster a stronger relationshipbetween business and the Dougherty County School System to help build aworkforce that the Albany area will use as an economic development tool. As astarter for the 2013-14 school year the Education Committee is hosing a “thankyou” breakfast for teachers to welcome them back to a stronger and more viableDCSS.

The Chamber is working to empower and train young professionals through theLeadership Development Committee/Emerge Albany, giving them theneeded skills for personal development to become business, civic, governmentand political leaders.

Georgia’s tourism industry is the eighth largest tourism economy in the United States. South Georgia has unique attractionsthat bring toursim dollars into Albany and our Toursim Committee works hard to get the word out about our greatattractions. It is important that we all promote Albany in its best light to keep our hotels, local restaurants and retail shopssmothered in customers. We want southwest Georgians to dine and shop locally while inviting our neighbors to visit often.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEOMembership in almost all Chambers of Commerce has declined over the last 5 years. Even

before the current economic climate took hold, people were questioning the value of theirorganization memberships. The good old days of automatic membership renewal are just amemory. Most businesses want to see a ROI for their memberships when being asked to renew, even more definite, when being asked to join.

With the growth of the internet and the emergence of a myriad of networking groups,Chambers of Commerce are no longer the only game in town...we have competition. The onedifference between Chambers of Commerce and the rest is OUR Chamber is the ONLYorganization in our community lobbying and fighting to provide a sound economic climate forour members and business community, yet at the same time serving as the “front door to ourcommunity”. On August 27-29 our Chamber will be conducting a membership drive withhundreds of our business leaders helping to make our Chamber grow and be stronger for thesame reason your business wants to grow. The basic, most fundamental business principle is thatif you are not growing, then you are headed for irrelevance. It really doesn’t get any simpler thanthat.

In order for us to do this we must continue to reinvent ourselves. Dynamic organizations figure out how to reinvent andreinvigorate their membership development and membership retention practices. They return positive territory and thenmaintain a sustainable growth strategy. They pay very close attention to what their members want and need and thenreassess what they have to offer. Recently the Schapiro Group launched their 2012 Industry Survey with some interestingstatistics compared to the 2007 survey regarding Chambers and the business community, so let me share some of theinformation that was discovered.

When consumers know that a business is a member of the local Chamber, there is now a 49% increase infavorability toward that business (up from 44% in 2007). When consumers perceive that a business is a Chambermember, there is a 73% increase in consumer awareness and a 68% increase in local reputation (51% and 57%in 2007). Consumers are 80% more likely to patronize a business in the future that they believe is a member of thelocal Chamber (63% in 2007). The results of the 2007 and 2012 Schapiro studies are clear: Positive increases amongconsumers and business owners when a business is known as a member of their local Chamber of Commerce, and nowwe know that positive perception is growing.

Our Chamber is working daily to determine what products and services we can offer to our members thatwill provide the greatest ROI and we will continue to do so. However, it appears that the greatest ROI abusiness can have is the perception they receive from consumers and other businesses when supporting theirlocal Chamber of Commerce.
