by becoming a Platinum partner. Of course prospective members need to be assisted through the process of joining the Club, but that is where our Club’s membership staff helps make it easy. Are you Platinum yet?

The Board is currently working through the budgeting process for fiscal year 2013. Once completed, this will help give the Club a road map to assist the long range planning efforts for years to come.

With pool season, sports camps, Fair St. Louis, the High School Soccer All-Star Games, the Race for the Cure and happy hours, it has been a busy summer at the Club. Before summer turns to fall, get out and enjoy the pool. Also, make plans to attend some of the great events that are approaching.

While the dining and athletics here are outstanding, if that is all you are utilizing the MAC for, you are missing out on a big part of Club life. One of the themes that kept coming up in talking to the members of the 50 Year Club is the important role that the social aspects of the MAC have played in enriching their lives.

There are several exciting new events featured in this month’s magazine. In addition to all of the wonderful traditional MAC events, the Club continues to explore new events to meet the interests and needs of our members. Get out and fully experience the MAC by attending a new event or trying one of the Club’s more than 50 amenities for the first time.

Recently, my wife Kerrie and I had the pleasure of attending the

Club’s 50 Year Party. The annual event honors those members who have been members of the MAC for more than a half a century. Eleven new members joined the 50 Year Club this year, raising the total to 101!

The fact that we have so much longevity in our membership ranks is another reminder of just how special our Club is, in the lives of our members. It is that type of dedication and commitment from so many people over the years that has built the MAC into a St. Louis institution since 1903.

I enjoyed hearing stories and gaining insight into what has kept these members connected to the Club for so long. The camaraderie among the 50 Year Club members was on full display. It was exactly the type of event that Past President Jack Murphy would have enjoyed. The MAC community was saddened by the passing of Mr. Murphy earlier this summer. His love for our Club was evidenced by more than 50 years of membership, his service to the Board and his generous contribution to help kick start the MAC Preservation Foundation. It is fitting that our boardroom, where we hold our monthly meetings, is named after Jack Murphy because he embodied the spirit of the MAC. He recognized that as members of our great Club, we all share a responsibility to help preserve and grow the MAC for future generations to enjoy.

There are several ways you can do this. First, you can support the MAC Preservation Foundation, which raises funds for essential improvements to the Downtown Clubhouse. Later this month, the MAC Golf Classic, chaired by Past

President Mark Belew, will be hosted by the Country Club at the Legends. Round up a threesome and hit the links for the Preservation Foundation. If you are not a golfer, you can still support the cause by attending the dinner and auction that night.

Another opportunity to support the Preservation Foundation is through the Brick Program. You can purchase an attractive commemorative brick, similar to the bricks on display at Busch Stadium, to show support for your Club. The Preservation Foundation Co-Chairs Don Gunn, Gerry Ortbals and Kim Tucci, recently announced that the commemorative bricks will be on permanent display in the Art Gallery, located in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby. In the coming months, this area will showcase the members who have contributed to this important effort.

Introducing our Club to friends, family and business associates is another wonderful way to strengthen the MAC. Led by Membership Committee Co-Chairpersons Mary Frontczak and Troy Robertson, I am pleased to report that the Platinum Partnership has helped improve our membership numbers and outperform our 2012 Fiscal Year Budget. More than 200 members have become Platinum partners and the number grows every day. Why are so many members becoming Platinum partners? It’s simple. Who doesn’t want lower dues and Diamond Club benefits. That is exactly what the Platinum partnership offers. The other reason that it has been a success is because it is easy. You don’t have to “sell” the Club to prospective members, the Club sells itself. Plus, your prospective member can now also enjoy lower dues

Dear Members:In my inaugural Cherry Diamond article, there was an underlying theme referred to in several places. This

noted theme “Obvious Platinum Club Status”, was the base platform where my discussions with the Search Committee and Board of Governors centered back in January, as we discussed The MAC and my possibly joining the team. The question becomes, is this concept contrived, convoluted, over-used or is there actually something meaningful where we can hang our hats?

A little history and prospective on this “Platinum Club” concept may be appropriate here and help set the stage. Not long ago, there was a creative and very entrepreneurial gentleman in and around the Club business. While his main focus was conducting executive searches for private Clubs, he found time to conceive this idea and insert it into existence and our world of Club-dom. Along the way, the plaques, collateral materials, training guides, lapel pins and tee shirts came on line. There was an obvious end game in play from the beginning.

But more importantly, those Clubs who were granted this new found Platinum Status loved it and touted their pre-eminence, and then, bought up all the tee shirts. Those of us managing outstanding Club operations who were not bestowed this high honor snubbed it as manufactured rubbish and were very, very jealous and somewhat cynical.

I recently spoke with the ‘Platinum Club Status’ creator and verbally applauded his cunning manipulation of our combined Club world mind. I also congratulated him for his foresight in setting this Platinum Standard, which in hindsight, we actually were lacking and absolutely required. The Club world is quite small. Our GM fraternity is tight and we all talk. Just like you members!

So, all that brings us full circle. What is “Obvious Platinum Club Status?” Well, I can tell it is very real. You know it when you’re around it. It starts at the drive up, continues through the front door, on to the interaction with staff, the facilities, the cleanliness, the program quality, the menus and services enjoyed, the traditions honored and the camaraderie that permeates. You know it when you’re there.

I’ve been fortunate in my travels to experience Platinum Status. And, when you are immersed in one of those experiences it is “Obvious” that you are someplace special. So there you have it. Our quest and daily, hourly goal: To aim at “Obvious Platinum Status” as the clear target and to stay on track as we tweak programs, facilities and services toward this destination.

In many areas, The MAC is there and you can absolutely sense it. In other areas, we have our work to do which is where I think the fun and challenge reside. In all that we do going forward, there is one question we need to ask as we close every discussion, “is this leading us to Obvious Platinum Status?”

As I round the corner on month six with The MAC, one thing is for sure, we truly have opportunity everywhere. By working together and continually filling our three buckets—Rooms, Banquets and Memberships, we will be on the pathway to providing the resources needed to fix the “Unobvious” areas. As we pull plans together, your input is essential as we prioritize initiative and allocate our resources. How do we do that? That’s next month’s topic! Linebacker Nathan Kruse Shines with the

Help of the MAC

MAC Trainer David Vandeven has been working with

Chaminade graduate Nathan Kruse for the past three years. Together, they have trained for an hour, four times per week. The linebacker has since gained over 23 pounds of pure muscle. As a result, Kruse was recruited to play football at Hope College in Holland, Mich. The trainers at the MAC have the ability to train athletes at a very high level. Personal trainers are available at both Clubhouses to work with high level athletes. Sprint Triathlon

Swim, bike and run for fun at the fourth annual MAC Sprint

Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 18, at MAC West. If you have never “tried a tri,” this will be a fun event to challenge yourself. The race begins with a 300-yard swim, followed by a 12-mile bike and concludes with a 3-mile run. The transition area will open at 6:30 a.m. A mandatory safety briefing will be held at 7 a.m., with the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. All members 16 and older are welcome to participate. Included in the price is a full breakfast buffet immediately following the race.

Lockers Available on 5M Downtown

Relax in the comfort and privacy of the 5M locker room Downtown after a tough workout. The Men’s Locker

room has space available and features larger lockers than the men’s North & South locker rooms. There is an up charge of $20 per month for all members in the 5M locker room, but the amenities make the extra charge worth it.

In addition to larger lockers, each locker is adorned with a nameplate. The locker room also features two lounge areas, complete with flat screen TVs and loungers for relaxing. A single use hot tub, dry heat sauna and two tanning beds, available at an additional cost, are also inside the locker room as well as a wet steam room.

The locker room is attached to the men’s 5M deli, which is open for lunch Monday through Friday, and is men only. Men can eat in their workout clothes or order lunch to be ready after your workout. All men are welcome to use the deli, but only 5M locker holders have it attached to their locker room area.

Additional amenities include ready-to-use toothbrushes, razors, washcloths, thicker quality bath towels, higher quality shampoo, bar soap and more. Gillette and Clubman amenities are also available. The 5M locker room has a fraction of the total number of lockers in the other two locker rooms Downtown, making for a quieter and more private experience. The locker room is off limits to all members and guests unless they are a locker holder in the 5M locker room. As a 5M locker holder, you will still be able to have your athletic clothes laundered as in the other locker areas.

Root for the Rams

Football season is right around the corner. The MAC is your pre- and post-game destination for all Rams games. This season,

fans are looking forward to seeing what new Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher will bring to the team. The 2012 home opener for the Rams will be Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3:05 p.m. The MAC serves up the best football buffet in town. The location is perfect since the MAC is just steps away from the Edward Jones Dome. Call 314-539-4470 for reservations. The price is $23.50 for noon games and $18.95 for afternoon games. Fall Basketball Leagues

As summer begins to wind down, fall is

right around the corner. Temperatures will begin to drop and the leaves will change colors. The season also marks the start of the fall basketball leagues, which begin the week of Sept. 10.

Make plans now to play in one of the Club’s three leagues. The Open Leagues will play on Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Downtown Clubhouse. The Over 40 League will play Downtown on Wednesday nights. On Thursdays, the action shifts to the West Clubhouse for another Open League. There are no age restrictions. If you play in a Downtown league, you are also welcome to play in the West league. The cost is $60 per league. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, Aug. 31. St. Louis Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock, St. Louis Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher and St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny each headlined dinners at the MAC as part of the KMOX Sports Speakers Series. Hitchcock spoke in February, Fisher in June and Matheny in July.

Downtown Brewery Tour and Tasting

The Associates and the Craft Beer Club sponsored

a downtown brewery tour on Saturday, June 30. The group toured and tasted beers from the Morgan Street, Six Row and Urban Chestnut breweries. Brewmasters gave presentations of each brewery and the processes involved in creating the brews. The best part was the sampling!

Members and guests using the Downtown lobby will soon enjoy

a new vista: a display of handsome commemorative bricks honoring major contributors to the MAC Preservation Foundation. The announcement was made this month by Preservation Foundation Co-Chairs, Don Gunn, Kim Tucci and Gerry Ortbals.

The Missouri Athletic Club Preservation Foundation, a 501(c) tax exempt organization, was formed to preserve the infrastructure of the Downtown clubhouse. Over the past several years, funds have been raised to help modernize various areas of our Club. A new fire escape was fabricated and installed on the east side of the building facing Fourth St.; a 15,000 volt electrical switch replacement was installed to address electrical problems recurring in recent years, and areas behind and in the Jack Buck Grill have been totally renovated and expanded to among other things, improve access and use. These are but a few of the improvements the Preservation

Foundation has funded, and which will continue.

The Brick Program helps bring funds to the Club in order to continue this renovation. Commemorative bricks will be on permanent display in the Art Gallery area and readily visible to all lobby visitors. Brick sizes range from 16” x 16” – 12” x 12” – 8” x 8” and 4” x 8”, representing contributions from $2,500 to $25,000.

Donors may designate those whom they choose to honor with personalized text. Contributions are tax deductible. You can pick up forms at the Downtown Front Desk or email [email protected].

Camp MACIt’s hard to believe that summer has

come and passed. The kids will be headed back to school in just a few short weeks. As summer dwindles down, they will reflect on how they spent their summer. Perhaps they went on vaca-tion with their parents, went to the St. Louis Zoo or hung out poolside. If they participated in summer sports camps at MAC West, they undoubtedly made new friends, learned new sports and had a great summer!

Summer sports camps at West are a favorite of the youngest MAC members. A typical day of sports camp started with a rousing game of kickball, followed by a high-speed game of “sharks and min-nows.” Throughout the rest of the day, campers participated in a variety of sports such as racquetball, squash and tennis, baseball, flag football, volleyball, fencing and martial arts! Parents even got to join in on the fun at Golf camp! The camps were led by top pros in their prospective sports. Campers learned the fundamentals an athlete needs to suc-ceed in their favorite sports. Campers also learned life skills such as sportsman-ship, personal responsibility and respect for others.

To build these skills, Coach Eric Saxton, who coordinated the summer sports camps, expected the children to hold doors for one another, be quiet and attentive when receiving instructions, bring their swimsuits for the pool, and most of all—have fun!

No day at summer sports camp was complete without a trip to the pool! Campers had a splashing good time in the pool after playing their favorite sports!

4th of July FunMembers and their guests had a

prime spot to get the first view of the 135th Veiled Prophet Parade. The parade route began right in front of the Downtown Clubhouse and featured colorful floats, marching bands and other attractions. The restaurants were busy throughout the day and served as the ideal destination for members to enjoy a good meal, while taking a break from the heat.

Komen Race for the Cure

This year, team MAC again participated in the St. Louis

Komen Race for the Cure. The 14th annual event had over 51,000 participants. Team MAC raised money that contributed to the more than $2.46 million raised by St. Louisans on race day, Saturday, June 23. Members and guests arrived bright and early to collect their t-shirts and prepare for the race.

The Forever Young Club Takes a Patriotic Trip

Nashville and Berne, Ind. Highlights from the trip were the Heartland Chamber Chorale and Jazz Orchestra’s musical program honoring WWII Veterans, touring the Swissland Cheese factory and an architectural tour of Columbus, Ind.

Eighty of the most talented boys and girls high school senior soc-

cer players in the St. Louis area capped off their prep careers by playing in the annual UMB Bank Senior All-Star Games, hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club. Most of the talented players who competed in the showcase at the A-B Center will continue to play soccer at the collegiate level.

In recent years, the North squads have gotten the better of the play, but this year the South pulled off the sweep. The South girls put on an offen-sive show in a dominating 8-1 victory. Nicole Breece (Parkway South) scored two goals and earned South MVP hon-ors. Jennifer Morris (Hazelwood West) scored the lone goal and earned MVP honors for the North squad.

In the boys game, the South team cruised to 3-0 victory with goals from Mehlville H.S. teammates Emir Alihodzic and Aris Nukic. Alihodzic was named the South MVP and Justin Bilyeu (CBC) was the MVP for the North.

Between games, Les Hager from Francis Howell North was presented the Steve Krause “12th Man” award for distinguished service to high school soccer. The Sam Copple Goalkeeper of the Year honors went to Jessica Perry (Webster Groves) and Sean Clancy (Summit).

This year’s All-Star games were spon-sored by UMB Bank. Following the girls game, UMB presented $1,000 schol-arships to one female and one male player, based on the students’ involve-ment, coursework and future plans. The 2012 UMB scholarship recipients were Lauren Josten (Duchesne) and Stephen Koeller (St. Dominic).

Long before the 2012 London Olympics, the MAC was

instrumental in organizing one of the modern Olympic Games. The first Olympiad in the Western Hemisphere was held in St. Louis in 1904. At the time, St. Louis was America’s fourth largest city. The then brand-new MAC had much to do with organizing these first American Olympic Games, which came a year after the Club opened. In fact, the World’s Fair and Olympic Games of St. Louis were the primary driving force for the formation of the Club in 1903.

The St. Louis games were only the third Olympiad since the modern games were revived in Athens in 1896. In 1901, the International Olympic Committee originally chose Chicago as the site for the first modern Olympics in this part of the world. St. Louis was later chosen after threatening to host

St. Louis was the site of the first Olympic Water Polo competition. The MAC competed against the likes of the New York Athletic Club and the Chicago Athletic Association.

Several MAC athletes enjoyed success at the Games. C.L. Hastedt won the 100-yard dash. Harry J. Kiener competed in the half mile, 120-yard high hurdles and 200-yard low hurdles. Kiener later starred as the center of the MAC basketball team and brought honors to the Club. Kiener is regarded as one of the great athletes in St. Louis history and his name is immortalized thanks to Kiener Plaza.

The MAC Olympic legacy continued well past the 1904 Games. Four years later, Joseph Forshaw, a pioneering member of the MAC and a storied marathon runner, would win a bronze medal in the marathon at the 1908 London Olympics. Forshaw was the flag-bearer for the United States team at the London Games. Forshaw finished 10th at the Stockholm Games in 1912, while Joseph Erxleben, another MAC runner, came in eighth.

The Olympic Games of 1904 helped the MAC make a name for itself. Since then, the Olympics and the MAC have flowered and continue to flourish today. Thanks to the Olympic Games of 1904, the young MAC got off the starting block quickly and has been running strong ever since.

Artist of the Month

The work of Astral Glass Studio

will be featured in the Downtown Clubhouse throughout September. Astral Glass Studio was founded by Gary Rice in California in 1974. In 1979, Gary met his future wife Judy, a contemporary glass artist, and a partnership was formed. The studio’s focus was architectural stained glass commissions. Gary and Judy also began experimenting with melting and fusing glass. In 2003, they moved to Clarksville, Mo., where they met Lance Stroheker, an SIUE trained glass artist. In 2008, Gary, Judy and Lance partnered to open Astral Glass Studio and Gallery in New Haven, Mo.

Astral Glass Studio is located in the Riverfront Art District and offers a wide variety art glass objects, both functional and nonfunctional, and features paintings by nationally recognized artists. Pieces from Astral can be found in the collections of the First Lady of Missouri, the First Lady of Sao Paulo Brazil, the Pentagon, and many nationally known celebrities.

The printed 2012-13 MAC Roster is available on the MAC website under the Member Central tab. In order to access the Roster, go to the Roster link and scroll over to “2012-13 Roster.” The Roster is composed in June and

is printed for members. Please note that the Roster is only current to time it is produced. Member information often changes after the yearly Roster is created. For the most up-to-date Roster information, log onto the MAC website and view the electronic Roster under the Members Only tab. The electronic Roster is a convenient and a real time way for you to stay connected to your Club, and your fellow members.

The Club’s fiscal year runs from September 1 through August 31. The third quarter of our 2011-2012 fiscal year ended on May 31, 2012.

During the first nine months of our fiscal year, revenue from departmental operations totaled $6,357,722. This total was $281,686 better than plan and $462,532 more than the prior year.

Membership dues reached $5,402,160. This total was $4,786 better than plan and $108,759 ahead of last year. Total resident members in May 2012 stood at 1,434 with total dues-paying members of 2,292; the corresponding totals for May 2011 were 1,491 and 2,398, respectively. We had 1,255 Diamond Club members in May 2012 which compares to 1,266 last May. There were 176 Platinum Partners in May 2012.

Unallocated costs have accumulated to $5,625,044 so far this year. This total is $22,862 less than plan and $68,452 more than last year.

Net operating cash flow (net income before depreciation) of $1,031,421 was

generated during the first nine months of our fiscal year. This amount was $142,657 better than plan and $316,576 greater than last year.

Capital expenditures during the first three quarters of our fiscal year totaled $88,382. Of the $88,382 spent so far this year, $31,864 has been spent Downtown and $56,518 has been spent at MAC West.

The Club ended the quarter with negative cash of $86,704 on its balance sheet. The line of credit balance at the end of May 2012 was zero.

At the end of May, the Club had long-term debt of $7,267,837 and MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, had long-term debt of $1,590,132 for a total of $8,857,969. We are currently paying down our debt by approximately $69,000 per month.
