Time: 3–4 months Cost: about $4300 ($4000 for

airstream and polishing service, $300 for interior decor, parts)

Basic Steps: The first thing we did

was gut the entire airstream, taking out all the interior appliances and built-ins. It’s like working at a

puzzle because each piece of furniture is connected to the next. Removing the 30-plus-year-old

bathroom and plumbing was by far the worst part. We sold the interior on the cheap to those trying to restore their airstreams to original form. Then we repaired the rotten

subfloor, rewired electrical where needed, sealed any leaks, laid the new laminate flooring, applied beadboard wallpaper to the wall and hand stenciled the top pattern on the wall. We also added molding

and trim to create a clean, finished look. Keep in mind, nothing is straight in an airstream, so all your products need to be able to bend and flex with the wall curves. We got the exterior polished by the

pros due to the sensitivity of aluminum.

Our advice: Be patient and do your research — there are a lot of

steps in restoring the airstream, and a lot of repair items are not commonly found. We didn’t know the first thing about airstream restoration, and we relied heavily on airstream forums and our original 1975 airstream manual. Chances are there are others coming across the same issue you are, and they are always willing to

help. Also, recruit some help. I somehow convinced my husband and family to help me out — I definitely couldn’t have done it without them. Keep the end goal in mind! — Ida

Anyone?

Everyone has wondered at a given point in

life if they can become debt-free. But rarely

do folks do much about that. The debt burden

is too high, the unemployment rate too high,

property values have plunged, etc. As human

beings, we tend to find an excuse to not do

something that could potentially be difficult to

achieve.

No wonder a saying goes: “how do you eat an

elephant? One bite at a time.” Even a small

monthly additional principal reduction to your

debts shaves off tens of months off your debt:

i.e. $30 applied to a $100,000 loan at 5% rate

monthly, reduces the repayment of the loan by

41 months. And that’s such a tiny monthly

reduction… What if you were shown the way

to cut your mortgage down to 10 years or less

and have all of your debts paid off in the

meantime, too?

I can just hear folks saying that this is farfetched

and it would never work. Well, if you don’t try

and problem-solving on a daily basis. So here

are a few freebies you can do to start fixing your

finances right now and freeing up the money to

pay down the debts:

1. Get your credit report pulled once a year to

make sure the information is true and

nothing ugly creeps up without

your knowledge. Whatever is

“ugly” – start fixing it!

2. Check up on your insurance

policies – you could be saving

money if you shop around!

3. Check your cell phone bill - do

you really need that unlimited

plan?

4. Check your W-4 and see if you

are over-withholding taxes from

your own pay check?

5. Take a look at your credit cards –

are you taking advantage of the

mileage/bonus plans?

6. Don’t spread your “extra” money

around a bunch of different

cards and loans – focus on one at

a time

7. Does your employer offer a 401K match?

Take it, it’s FREE money!

The bottom line is – every little bit helps, and

done properly (not by depriving yourself of

life’s little pleasures like shopping, eating out,

etc.) – small sums add up and you could be debt

-free sooner than you know it!

15 Essential tools every homeowner should have

The following items are essential tools, but this list is by no

means exhaustive. Feel free to email me regarding any

1. Plunger

A clogged sink or toilet is one of the most inconvenient

household problems that you will face. With a plunger on

hand, however, you can usually remedy these plumbing issues

relatively quickly. It is best to have two plungers -- one for the

sink and one for the toilet.

2. Combination Wrench Set

One end of a combination wrench set is open and the other

end is a closed loop. Nuts and bolts are manufactured in

standard and metric sizes, and because both varieties are

widely used, you’ll need both sets of wrenches. For the most

control and leverage, always pull the wrench toward you,

instead of pushing on it. Also, avoid over-tightening.

3. Slip-Joint Pliers

Use slip-joint pliers to grab hold of a nail, a nut, a bolt, and

much more. These types of pliers are versatile because of the

jaws, which feature both flat and curved areas for gripping

many types of objects. There is also a built-in slip-joint, which

allows the user to quickly adjust the jaw size to suit most tasks.

4. Adjustable Wrench

Adjustable wrenches are somewhat awkward to use and can

damage a bolt or nut if they are not handled properly.

However, adjustable wrenches are

ideal for situations where you need

two wrenches of the same size. Screw

the jaws all the way closed to avoid

damaging the bolt or nut.

5. Caulking Gun

Caulking is the process of sealing up

cracks and gaps in various structures and certain types of

piping. Caulking can provide noise mitigation and thermal

insulation, and control water penetration. Caulk should be

applied only to areas that are clean and dry.

6. Flashlight

None of the tools in this list is of any use if you cannot visually

inspect the situation. The problem, and solution, are apparent

only with a good flashlight. A traditional two-battery

flashlight is usually sufficient, as larger flashlights may be too

unwieldy.

7. Tape Measure

Measuring house projects requires a tape measure -- not a

ruler or a yardstick. Tape measures come in many lengths,

although 25 feet is best. Measure everything at least twice to

ensure accuracy.

8. Hacksaw

A hacksaw is useful for cutting metal objects, such as pipes,

bolts and brackets. Hacksaws look thin and flimsy, but they’ll

easily cut through even the hardest of metals. Blades are

replaceable, so focus

your purchase on a

quality hacksaw frame.

9. Torpedo Level

Only a level can be

used to determine if

something, such as a

shelf, appliance or picture, is correctly oriented. The torpedo-

style level is unique because it not only shows when an object

is perfectly horizontal or vertical, but it also has a gauge that

shows when an object is at a 45-degree angle. The bubble in

the viewfinder must be exactly in the middle -- not merely

close.

10. Safety Glasses / Goggles

For all tasks involving a hammer or a power tool, you should

always wear safety glasses or goggles. They should also be

worn while you mix chemicals.

11. Claw Hammer

A good hammer is one of the most important tools you can

own. Use it to drive and remove nails, to pry wood loose from

the house, and in combination with other tools. They come in

a variety of sizes, although a 16-ounce hammer is the best all-

purpose choice.

12. Screwdriver Set

It is best to have four screwdrivers: a small and large version

of both a flathead and a Phillips-head screwdriver. Electrical

screwdrivers are sometimes convenient, but they're no

substitute. Manual screwdrivers can reach into more places

and they are less likely to damage the screw.

13. Wire Cutters

Wire cutters are pliers designed to cut wires and small nails.

The side-cutting style (unlike the stronger end-cutting style)

is handy, but not strong enough to cut small nails.

14. Respirator / Safety Mask

While paints and other coatings

are now manufactured to be less

toxic (and lead-free) than in

previous decades, most still contain

dangerous chemicals, which is

why you should wear a mask to

avoid accidentally inhaling. A

mask should also be worn when

working in dusty and dirty

environments. Disposable masks

usually come in packs of 10 and should be thrown away after

use. Full and half-face respirators can be used to prevent the

inhalation of very fine particles that ordinary facemasks will

not stop.

15. Duct Tape

This tape is extremely strong and adaptable. Originally, it was

widely used to make temporary repairs to

many types of military equipment. Today,

it’s one of the key items specified for home

emergency kits because it is water-

resistant and extremely sticky. Remember

duct tape is good for almost everything,

except ducts…

In many indigenous cultures, the concept of land ownership

doesn't exist. "Home" is not a single structure with a price

tag attached and a long-term financial commitment entailed.

It's not a piece of land demarcated by property line markers,

verified by a surveyor, and guarded by a fence. Home is

much more than that.

Home is a place where it's easy to relax, feel

safe, and do what you need to do. That feeling

can have four walls around it and a roof

above, or it can travel with a person or group

from place to place. Being around family,

friends, and cultural connections means home

for some people. A whole block,

neighborhood, city, or region may feel like

home, if one has cultivated a relationship

with that place over time.

Today, homeownership is a powerful step in the direction

of homecoming--achieving that stable, confident,

comfortable feeling--for a lot of people. And it's easy to

think that once the keys are handed over, a magical entity

called a "home" will begin to exist in the house that one

purchases. But again, home is not that simple, especially

given the fact that at the present moment, homeownership

feels out of reach for many.

To be sure, homeownership has many advantages, and there

are a whole host of resources in Portland for people who are

interested in becoming homeowners. I, for one, am pursuing

that goal and tapping into those resources. But in the

meantime, there's a lot of work to do toward building a

sense of home that can be strengthened by homeownership,

but doesn't depend on it.

I consider myself lucky to have the

opportunity to work with clients who do

own property, and who value their

relationship with their land. I am also

privileged to get to work with organizations

that help people recognize and improve upon

natural and human resources, and build

connections within the community.

Ultimately, investing in the community

means creating a wider base of support than just a single

residence, which means increased resilience and even more

stability when we do own a home.

A New Model for Green

Schools

Rosa Parks Elementary School in Portland, Oregon is

housed in a super-green building that earned a LEED-

gold certification and, according to the US Green

Building Council, uses 24 percent less energy than a

comparably sized but conventionally built

school. About a third of its building materials were

locally sourced, and virtually none of the construction

waste went to a landfill. All storm water is managed

on site, none becoming polluted runoff.

But having a green building is only a small part of the

story. Unlike so many new schools being built today,

Rosa Parks sits right in the middle of a neighborhood

where most of its students can walk or bike to

school. A community garden is right across the

street. Five large "heritage trees" were preserved on

the 2.38-acre site, now a "community campus" also

containing a Boys & Girls Club and neighborhood

community center managed by the Portland Parks

Department.

The website Architects of Achievement describes the school’s role in reviving a diverse and recently

distressed neighborhood:

project in Oregon history.

Set on land donated by the

Housing Authority of

Portland, the K-5 school is

part of the New Columbia

Community Campus,

which replaces the old

crime-ridden Columbia

Villa housing project.

Serving as a model for

educational improvement

throughout the School

District, this project was

designed to serve the whole

child, as well as the family,

neighborhood, and greater

community.

Architectural Record adds:

The new school is divided into four ‘neighborhoods,’

each containing 125 students. Each neighborhood

contains five classrooms, a resource/student support

room, and support functions around a ‘Neighborhood

Commons.’ At the entry to the school, families are

provided their own resource room, as well as access to

a library information center. Functions including art,

computers, music, and food service are shared with

the new Boys & Girls Club.

By all accounts, the school has been a great success

and is now a source of much community pride and

activity. Instead of relegating our kids to places where

it has become illegal to walk to school, instead of

schools plopped in the middle of nowhere, this is

what we need more of – schools that anchor their

neighborhoods, extending sustainability beyond their

walls.

This video elaborates on these concepts better than I

can. I love the beginning: “It wasn’t simply a school

project. It was really a community project.”

RRRR esidential deconstruction: A win

fo r the homeowner, the

environment and the community

If you live in one of Portland’s close-in, well-

established neighborhoods, there is a good

chance that a home on your street has been

remodeled or even torn down. Do you know

where all of the construction debris from

those projects went? Most likely into a

landfill, contributing to the more than 136

million tons of building-related construction

and demolition waste generated each year in

the U.S. Only 20-30% of construction and

demolition waste is currently recycled in the

U.S.

According to The ReBuilding Center in

Portland, deconstruction can divert up to

85% of a building’s major components to

reuse instead of a landfill. If you consider that

over 245,000 homes are demolished every

year in the U.S., we’re missing a significant

opportunity to put building materials to

better use both for homeowners and the

environment! The ReBuilding Center

estimates that the greenhouse gas reduction

associated with deconstructing instead of

demolishing one 2,000 sq ft house is the

equivalent of taking three cars off the road for

an entire year.

What exactly is deconstruction? A

publication by Metro, Portland’s elected

regional government, describes

deconstruction as “the systematic hand or

mechanical disassembly of a building

structure in reverse order of assembly in

order to reharvest the building materials and

minimize the environmental impacts of

While building preservation is usually the

most sustainable method for maintaining

existing homes, deconstruction offers a great

way to create your dream home while

minimizing impact on the environment.

Building materials that are unsafe or

structurally sound for reuse can often be

recycled.

Why don’t more homeowners or contractors

consider deconstruction and reuse instead of

demolition or recycling for

their projects? The two most

common myths about

deconstruction, are it is too

difficult and expensive. Here

are some points to consider

when considering

deconstruction and reuse

versus demolition:

• Throughout Oregon, we

are lucky to have a number

of trained, qualified

deconstruction teams and

reuse stores that make

deconstruction and reuse

simple. Check out The

ReBuilding Center in

Portland or Habitat for Humanity’s

ReStore, located in many communities.

• Depending on a homeowner’s tax

situation, the tax deduction that can be

claimed from donating reusable building

materials can make the cost of

deconstruction less than demolition.

• Deconstruction creates six to eight local

jobs in Portland for every one job created

by standard demolition. Given the

continued high unemployment rate,

adopting deconstruction is a great way to

support our local economy.

• When you donate materials to a

deconstruction and reuse nonprofit, the

organization will use some of the proceeds

from those materials to support their

community development efforts such as

putting safe housing within reach of low-

income families.

• Reusing or repurposing building materials

from your home or from a reuse store can

help you save money when compared with

purchasing new building materials. Reused

materials can infuse creativity into a

project and maintain the historical

integrity of a home.

When properly done, deconstruction and

reuse can save you money, help the

environment, and support your local

community—a triple win.

Items that can be deconstructed and reused in

a home include: flooring, tongue and groove

wall and ceiling finishes, terra cotta roof tiles,

metal shingles, slate roof tiles, bricks, stones,

masonry, rafters, wall studs, windows, doors,

trim, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures,

electrical equipment, mechanical equipment,

trees, shrubs and appliances. If you are a Do-

It-Yourselfer, here are a few things to keep in

mind if you decide to deconstruct part of your

home for a remodel:

• Homes built before 1978 often contain lead

-based paint and asbestos building

materials. Those materials should be tested

and abated by a licensed professional

before deconstruction begins.

• Donation of materials valued at more than

$5,000, require a qualified written

appraisal for tax purposes.

• Make sure you obtain a demolition permit

and disconnect relevant utilities before

deconstruction.

• Deconstructed materials that will be

donated or reused should be stored where

they will not be exposed to the elements or

insect damage to maximize salvage value.

M oney Matters:

Talking About Money

Money issues routinely top the list as the most stressful

of topics – ahead of health, work, and children. Money

has become central to our survival and is used in society

as a measurement of success. Yet for all its importance,

most of us have never taken a personal finance course,

nor did many of us have parents skilled in providing

objective financial guidance, so it is not surprising that

we often find ourselves unprepared to have constructive

and positive personal finance conversations with our

spouse or partner. Add to this shaky base the stresses

associated with purchasing a home and the stage is set

for a destabilizing and emotionally charged discussion at

a time when candid and direct communication is vital.

There are, however, a few straightforward steps you can

take to increase the probability of having effective and

productive conversations: active listening; information

sharing; and conversation planning.

Active Listening

Knowing the other person is listening and that we are

clearly understood are both critical ingredients to any

successful conversation, particularly a conversation we

may be uncomfortable having and often involving

unfamiliar terms. Simply taking a moment to restate

our understanding of what we believe we just heard the

other person say provides an opportunity for catching

misunderstandings early – preventing a small issue to

become center stage. The practice of restating can be

interchanged with that of repeating – to the best of your

abilities – exactly what you believe was said. The added

benefit of each is that these require the listener focus on

what is being said, rather than strategizing about what

comment or objection might be tossed out as a

counterpoint.

Information Sharing

Any financial discussion must be based on the most

accurate information available and understood by

everyone involved. Ideally, this data could be easily

accessed at any time by either person to minimize any

concern that the data has been manipulated to influence

the outcome. Allowing each person the opportunity to

review the information during a time that is best suited

to their own schedule helps to create a more open and

comfortable atmosphere before the meeting has begun ,

as well as provide a logical time to ask questions and

research potential issues prior to the meeting.

Conversation Planning

Finding a time and place agreeable to both people can

help set the stage for a more productive meeting as well

as one that is more focused and less stressful.

Particularly with discussions about money, spontaneous

meetings can cause one person to feel ambushed and

more defensive - making it less likely any difficult

decisions will be made or compromises reached. In

addition to agreeing to a time and place, agreeing – at

least generally – to the agenda can help to reduce

anxiety and help you to estimate the amount of time to

allow. Eliminate distractions too – turn off the TV, put

the phone out of reach and find somewhere quiet.

These techniques are all ones we practice while “at

work,” but often don’t think of using “at home.” Not

only will you increase the odds of having a more

productive conversation, you will be setting the stage

for more success financially – and setting an example for

friends and family members to follow as well.

How To Develop a Following on Twitter

1. Follow relevant local people on Twitter. Many people will follow you back if you

follow them, so look for local people, celebrities and businesses to follow.

Remember, every local business has somebody behind it. Every time they mention

you, their followers see your name. Strike up a conversation and you can watch

your followers grow!

2. When talking about a popular topic (Blazer games, the Olympics, Local Trends,

etc.) consider mentioning a “local expert”. Mentioning a blog, journalist or

business about an important topic may elicit a response, which in turn can

generate followers.

3. Use a popular hashtag (#) when tweeting. Hashtags are clickable and

searchable, so many will look to see who else is talking about the same topic as

them.

4. Twitter is all about conversation. The more you talk, the more people talk about

you. Create and be a part of a conversation and you will be far more visible when

using Twitter.

Even with fewer "For sale" signs lining

residential streets these days, it's important to

find a way to stand out in the crowd. How

about adding "Not haunted" or "Indoor

Plumbing" to your yard sign, like Canadian

ReMax agent Jake Palmer?

Or "Husband Left Us for a 22 Year Old ...

House For Sale by Scorned. Slightly bitter.

Newly single owner"?

The latter is the route Elle Zober of Oregon

went. The story came across our desk from

Yahoo! News via Oregon's KPTV.

Zober also set up her own website for the

house in a Portland, Ore., suburb. She says

"Adulterers Need Not Apply" and "We Loved

This Home. You Will, too." Her hometown

TV station reports that Zober's ex-husband

gave permission for the sign and helped pay

for it, in the hopes the former couple can sell

quickly.

She also added a new tag line: "Scorned,

slightly bitter but still, grateful and very

happy... life is good."

On her site, she writes, "The idea for the sign

was truly only to help SELL OUR HOME.

The ex needs a place of his own, so he can

plant his roots and move forward crafting a

"Daddy House" with the kids - and *I* need to

find a more affordable place so that the kids

and I can carve out our own happy place."

Zober is trying to sell her house without a

real estate agent. Meanwhile, Palmer, the

Canadian agent, tells a local radio station that

he wanted to draw attention to a property

after an initial sale fell through. Here's the

interview.

The idea to do something unconventional to

get your house to stand out on the market is

certainly tempting.

My husband and I decided earlier in July that

after almost eight months on the market -- all

the while juggling rent and a mortgage

payment -- we would rent our house out. It's

been a painful decision, but hopefully we'll

find some good renters who treat the home

like their own.

R emodeling in Reverse

I adored Olivia the moment I met her. 95 years old

and still had a wicked sense of humor and sparkle in

her eye. She is so healthy that she takes only one

aspirin a day and has lived long enough to know not to

sweat the small stuff. She’s lived in her home in North

Portland for well over 50 years and intends to stay

right there until her last day.

When I drove up to Olivia’s home, the first thing I

noticed is that a 95 year old woman may not have

much ability to keep up with home maintenance. The

3 foot retaining wall around her home was at a 90

degree angle and barely holding the flower beds in

place. The outside of the home definitely needed to be

scraped and painted. I came to find out that Olivia also

had visions of a new porch where she could sit and

watch her grand-children and great-grand-children

play.

How in the world does one pay for all that on a fixed

income without depleting all their savings? A Reverse

Mortgage suited Olivia’s needs perfectly!

A reverse mortgage is an FHA insured loan. Although

FHA has specific property-qualifying criteria, they

have special allowances on reverses mortgages that may

not apply to conventional mortgages. Repairs noted by

an FHA appraiser may be done after the loan closes

with a Hold Back.

In Olivia’s situation, she was approved for a substantial

line of credit on her reverse mortgage. She and her

family worked with contractors to get estimated bids

on the appraiser’s required repairs: what was involved

and how much would it cost. After submission and

approval of these bids from underwriting, an amount

equal to 1 ½ times the total bid amount was held back

out of Olivia’s line of credit. The rest of her loan/line

of credit closed as usual. After closing the contractors

completed all the repairs within 30 days. The

contractors were then paid out of the Held Back Funds,

and the rest was released back into Olivia’s line of

credit for future use.

I drove by her house last week and there she was

sitting on her new porch, basking in the warm

sunshine, admiring her new flower garden and keeping

on eye on those kids. She’s thinking about having her

bedroom painted so she’s surrounded by little paint

swatches. Luckily, she has the money to make

Wedgewood Blue a real possibility.

Danger: Charging Power Tool Batteries

A while back, one of my fellow radio hosts,

Mr. Barbecue, told me of a friend whose

house burned to the ground as a result of a

cordless tool battery charger catching fire.

Doing a quick Google search, I found, to my

surprise, that this is more common than I

would have expected. Based on the articles I

read, I’ve compiled a list of six suggestions for

safely charging power tool batteries:

1. Don’t ever leave batteries charging

overnight.

2. Put battery chargers on a switched power

strip that also runs something you

wouldn’t leave on when not in the shop,

like a radio.

3. Put a smoke detector in your shop, near

your power tools.

4. Check to see if your batteries or the tool

have been recalled.

5. Stop using

formerly silent chargers if they begin

“singing” or whining.

6. Don’t trust the user’s manual, even if it

says it’s ok to leave batteries charging.

Now that the safety consideration has been

addressed, there is one common

misconception I’d like to clear up about the

proper way to charge cordless tool batteries.

Because early NiCad batteries were first used

in low current devices like cordless phones,

they developed a “memory”, and after a while

simply wouldn’t hold a charge. The solution

was to periodically leave the phone out of the

charger, letting the battery discharge fully,

and then recharge it.

As consumers, we developed a memory as

well. Many folks think that the proper way to

treat a cordless tool is to fully discharge it

before putting it in the charger. This can

actually damage the battery. Instead,

you should stop using a battery as

soon as you feel a substantial decrease

in power from the tool. The other

consistent recommendation I found when

doing the research was to let the battery

rest and cool down before putting it into

the charger and this suggested charging

technique was the same regardless of the type

of battery.

Finally, there is a lot of confusion

surrounding the different types of cordless

tool batteries in use today. There are basically

three, Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Nickel Metal

Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (Li-ion).

Lithium Ion batteries are probably the wave

of the future for two major reasons:

1. They deliver comparable power in a much

lighter weight package, and

2. They have a very long shelf life without

losing a charge.

Lithium Ion chemical action produces about

3.6 volts per cell while all other common

varieties, whether lead acid, alkaline, or

NiCad, produce 1.2 volts per cell. This is why

some of the smaller cordless tools only have a

4 volt battery. It’s not really a battery at all;

it’s only one lithium ion cell. Technically to

be called a battery, it must be

two or more cells connected

together.

And, the long shelf life is a very

welcome characteristic of the

Lithium Ion battery. A typical

Nickel battery will discharge

naturally, 15 to 20 percent in the

first 24 hours, 7 to 10 percent

the next day, and about 1

percent every day after that.

Lithium Ion batteries will hold a

nearly full charge for months,

making them an ideal power

source for cordless tools that

don’t get used every day.

Community Energy Project (CEP) has

been serving Portland for over 30 with free

services focused on energy conservation and

safety. They have ventured into more

entrepreneurial endeavors in order to expand

service to the community, and to generate

revenue.

Fee for Service

Government funds

are always

shrinking and

competition is

always growing,

especially as the

community needs

more support in the

recession. Savvy

nonprofits (like

Our United

Villages with the

Rebuilding Center) are creating businesses

that both serve the community and fund

their programs. CEP has several fee-based

services that do just that.

Community Home Performance – CEP

works with customers to create an energy

upgrade plan, than make the most critical

energy and home health upgrades with

insulation, furnace installation, air sealing,

and more. CEP will be providing credited

classes for Realtors to learn more about the

benefits of making energy upgrades, and the

importance of common weatherization-

related safety issues such as good air

ventilation (to avoid mold and rot, as well as

issues with carbon monoxide, formaldehyde,

and off-gassing). The class will include

resources on tax deductions, benefits for

homeowners, and more.

Lead-Safe Work Practices (Renovation,

Repair, and Painting) – to help contractors

stay compliant with EPA regulations on

conducting lead-safe work, CEP offers

certification for contractors. CEP will be

offering a credited class to Realtors on the

importance of lead safety in old homes, as

well as resources for Realtors to give to new

homeowners who are buying pre 1978

housing in the future.

Community Education

The Fee for Service opportunities support

CEP’s free programs, including three free

workshops to the community, and those who

meet income and area guidelines can receive

a free kit of safety or weatherization supplies.

• Lead Poisoning Prevention –learn about

the dangers of lead exposure and how to

protect themselves and their families from

lead exposure while living in an older

house.

• Lead-Safe Home Projects –learn how to

conduct a lead-paint disturbing project in

a safe manner, protecting themselves,

their families, and even their neighbors

from exposure

• DIY Weatherization – weatherize your

home with simple draft-stopping tools,

and bring energy bills down to something

reasonable.

Direct Services for Seniors and People

with Disabilities

While there are several great programs for

seniors to get repairs and weatherization

(Multnomah County, REACH, Unlimited

Choices), CEP is the only one who can work

with renters. Program serves those with a

modest income in the City of Portland who

are over the age of 55 or have a disability.

• Weatherization – staff and volunteers

install vinyl storm window kits, door

weather-stripping, as stop drafts with

caulking, backer rod, spray foam, etc.

• Safety Repairs – Staff install smoke and

carbon monoxide alarms, grab bars, hand-

held shower heads, and railings as well as

conduct small carpentry jobs such as

railing installation and stair repairs.
