• The purpose of this seminar is to educate and inform members about the benefits of team riding and the suggested planning and conduct of a team ride. This should result in:– A reduction in riding risk– An increase in riding enjoyment– A greater sense of togetherness and pride


• We will cover the following topics associated with members riding together and working as a team:– Why a Team?– Ride Planning and Preparation– Responsibilities –Lead, Drag, Team Members– Ride Conduct– Questions & Answers


• Why a team?– There are several styles of group riding

• Mass Riding – Doing their own thing

• Leisure Riding – Loose rules and conduct

• Team Riding – Structured planning and ride conduct, having set “Rules of the Road” and actively working together to make the ride safer and more enjoyable


• Ride Planning & Preparation

–Plan the Route–Plan the Breaks–Plan the Speed–Plan the Teams

–Plan the Stops–Plan the Start–Start Prepared–Plan to Inform


• Responsibilities –Lead– Should be experienced

– Be able to make safe decisions

– Sets the tone for the ride

– Sets the speed of the ride

– Maintains communications

– Communicates any changes (Speed, etc.)

– Adheres to the schedule

– Listens to the Team Members


• Responsibilities – Drag– General conduct of the ride– Ensures that the team is abiding by the “rules”– Notices any unusual riding action– Secures lanes for the team– Drops off to offer assistance to Team Members– Keeps the Lead informed– Controls the pace of the ride


• Responsibilities – Team Members– Rides their own ride

– Arrives prepared and ready

– Makes certain that they have the ride information

– Communicates any change in position

– Maintains adequate spacing and position

– Follows the Lead direction

– Adheres to the Stop schedule

– Minimizes CB traffic

– Communicates any issues or concerns to the Lead


• Responsibilities – All– At a minimum the Lead and Drag should have

operating CB’s– All Team Members should be able to use hand

signals effectively


• Ride Conduct– Teams comprised of no more than 5 bikes

– Teams spaced at a minimum of 200 yards (7 sec) on the highway

– Maintain the 2 second following rule (1 sec to the offset bike)

– Maintain lane position

– Leads call for Single File formation as appropriate

– Points out all road hazards (road kill, pot holes, etc.)


• Ride Conduct (cont.)– Enters the traffic flow safely and efficiently– Passes traffic safely as a team on the highway– Passes traffic individually on two lane roads– Compress the formation at stop signs or

traffic signals– Exits the roadway for inclement weather– Parks as a team when possible

• Ride Conduct (cont.)• Emergencies

– Mechanical Issues• The bike verbally notifies or use hand

signal to indicate problem.

• The Drag bike pulls over with the bike.

• The Lead bike should find a safe place to pull the rest of the group off. (Exit ramp, Parking lot, side road, etc.)

– Accidents• Follow the “Motorcycle Crash Scene

Response ” guidelines.



Hand Signals- “Single File”

Arm and index finger extended straight up.Group needs to know this one

Bare hand is for demonstration and contrast. Always wear gloves while riding



Hand Signals- “Stagger Formation”

Arm extended straight up. First and fourth finger forms “ram’s horn” sign.Group needs to know this one




Hand Signals- “Hazard in Road”

Point immediately with emphasis. Sometimes done with right arm or left foot.Group needs to know this one




Hand Signals- “Stop or Slow”

Arm extended straight down. Palm back.Group needs to know this one



• Team Riding Takes Practice– It will give you a sense of pride when done well– It will make riding more enjoyable– It will help to reduce risk– Practice, practice, practice
