Stewardship Committee

Unless you have had an opportunity to serve on the Finance or

Stewardship Committee in the past, your familiarity with the Stewardship Committee may be limited to the annual completion of a pledge card. “The Steward-

ship Committee is the group that bugs me until I turn in my pledge card every fall.” And it is true that the primary responsibility of the Stewardship Committee is to help create the income side of the church’s annual budget by asking all members to provide an esti-mate for their upcoming calendar year financial gifts.

While this is an important responsibility, the Stewardship Committee’s role in the

church is actually much bigger than this. Healthy, growing churches need a strong foundation in order to fulfill their mission to make disciples for Christ. This foundation is built on members’ enthusiastic support through their prayers, their presence, their gifts, their service, and their witness.

Financial gifts are an essential part of the foundation because they enable the church

to share God’s love through worship, education, programs, missions, outreach, and service. Vibrant churches are powered by members who give intentionally, generously, and cheerfully because they understand that all we have comes from God, and financial gifts to the church are an important way we show our gratitude. Moreover, they are able to make the connection between their financial gifts and the church’s ability to spread God’s love, serve the community, and change the world.

The Stewardship Committee seeks to strengthen the culture of giving at First

Methodist and to help each member become a more intentional, generous, and cheerful giver. We look forward to your support as we kick off the annual stewardship campaign next month.

On behalf of the Stewardship Committee, thank you for all you have done in the past

and for your commitment to join us in continuing to build on the firm foundation at First United Methodist Church.

OUR RESPONSE

Sending Forth THY WILL Praise Band

Greeters for August 19: Beth Herndon, Pam Barrett, David Edwards

We thank the Praise Band for their ministry this morning.

From the Pastor We have reached that time of year when sum-mer vacations are over and children (and teachers) are returning to school. With that comes a whole range of emotions from excited anticipation to weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth! Preparing for the beginning of school requires a lot of preparation. There are notebooks and paper, pencils and crayons, backpacks and new clothes, and school supplies I can’t even think of that need to be purchased. The higher up in school you go the more required supplies go up in cost. The purchase of laptop computers and calculators can make your heads spin. But hey, it’s for our children’s education and future. There are also the intangible supplies we give that are just as, if not more important. Supplies like our encouragement and counsel, our hopes and dreams for them, and above all else our love. In this morning’s reading from Ephesians 5:15-20 the Apostle offers five imperatives to guide us in our grateful response to the Lord’s love and salvation. He calls followers of Christ to:

- Be careful - Be wise - Make the most of time - Be filled with the Spirit and - Give thanks.

We will unpack these five imperatives this morning. They work not only in living our life as a Christian, but they also offer wise counsel for our children as they return to school. By the way, be sure to keep all of our teachers and students in your prayers as this new school year begins!

When I was your foe, still your love fought for me, You have been so, so good to me. When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me, You have been so, so kind to me.
