Be Prepared
The other day I was planning on cooking some fish for Dawn for lunch. I had everything I needed: the fish,
the cornmeal, the other ingredients for the hush puppies, the oil, the fry daddy, etc. I had prepared ahead of time so
that I would be ready to go come lunch time. I even had some deer backstrip that I was going to cook as well. Time
came to get my fry daddy ready to go, but before I put in the oil, I needed to find my electric plug. Let’s just say
with all the preparations I made, I left one thing out that kept me from frying fish that day. Come to find out, I actu-
ally wasn’t prepared.
Why is being prepared so important? If you are not prepared, you miss your opportunity to do something.
Consider what Jesus says:
Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet
the bridegroom. And five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. For when the foolish took their
lamps, they took no oil with them, but the prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. Now while the
bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. But at midnight there was a shout,
“Behold, the bridegroom Come out to meet him.” Then all the virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And
the foolish said to the prudent, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” But the prudent an
swered, saying, “No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for
yourselves.” And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came , and those who
were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. And later the other virgins also
came, saying, “Lord, lord, open up for us.” But he answered and said, “Truly I say to you, I do not know

you.” Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour
One thing I’ve learned in life about being prepared is you have to do it ahead of time. Since the five foolish
virgins did not prepare by bringing extra oil, they missed out on their opportunity when the bridegroom came. I
had someone tell me one time “proper preparation prevents poor performance.” If you prepare like you’re sup-
posed to, you’ll be ready to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
You can essentially see the same three components to all the accounts in Mt. 25: the parable of the ten vir-
gins, the parable of the talents, the judgment scene. In each of these there are chances, there are choices, and there
are consequences. If we will prepare adequately, we can make the choices when we’re given the chance and we’ll
enjoy the positive consequences.
Brotherly,
Jeremy T. Butt
