THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today's responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain "Here am I, Lord." This "Here am I" is Jeremiah's great prophetic response to God's call. But today's story of Jeremiah and the refrain "Lord, come to my aid!" remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a "sneak preview" of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today's words from scripture may not be terribly sooth-ing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. EL COSTO DE SER DISCÍPULO El Salmo responsorial de hoy, Salmo 40 (39), nos es muy familiar por el refrán "Señor, date prisa en socorrerme". La historia de Jeremías hoy y el refrán "¡Señor, date prisa en socorrerme!" nos recuerda que siempre hay dos caminos para seguir el llamado de Dios. El autor de la Carta a los Hebreos también lo sabía. Él recordaba a sus lectores que aunque nos agobien desgracias y pe-cados, podemos todavía perseverar si mantenemos nuestros ojos fijos en Jesús, quien también conoció la vergüenza y el dolor de la cruz, pero vio más allá del sufrimiento, el gozo de sentarse a la derecha del trono de Dios. Jesús mismo dio a sus discípulos una "idea" de un bautismo que no sería tan maravilloso como el del Jordán que in-auguró su ministerio, sino de fuego y angustia. Las palabras de la Sagrada Escritura hoy pueden no ser terriblemen-te apaciguadoras, pero en su honestidad y fortaleza podemos reconocer las difi-cultades que el discípulo enfrenta a dia-rio, y consolarnos por la seguridad de nuestra salvación en Cristo. Chúa muốn đến thăm và ở lại nhà các con

Cuối cùng, chúng ta hãy lắng nghe lời Chúa Giêsu nói với Giakêu, xem ra cũng có ý nghĩa với chúng ta hôm nay: “Này ông Giakêu, xuống mau đi, vì hôm nay tôi phải ở lại nhà ông” (câu 5). Chúa Giêsu gửi đến các con cũng lời mời gọi đó: “Ta phải ở lại nhà con hôm nay”. Chúng ta có thể nói rằng Ngày Giới trẻ Thế giới bắt đầu hôm nay và tiếp tục vào ngày mai, tại nhà các con, vì đó chính là nơi Chúa Giêsu muốn gặp các con kể từ hôm nay. Chúa không muốn ở lại trong thành phố xinh đẹp này, hoặc chỉ lưu lại trong ký ức thân thương. Chúa muốn vào nhà các con, ở lại trong cuộc sống hằng ngày của các con: học hành, những năm đầu đi làm, tình bạn và mọi tình gắn bó, những niềm hy vọng và mơ ước. Chúa rất mong các con mang những điều ấy đến với Người khi các con cầu nguyện! Chúa hy vọng biết bao, trong tất cả những lần các con “giao tiếp” và “trò chuyện trên mạng” hằng ngày, các con hãy dành vị trí thứ nhất cho sợi chỉ vàng là cầu nguyện! Chúa mong đợi biết bao lời Chúa được nói với các con ngày này sang ngày khác, để nhờ đó các con biến Tin Mừng của Chúa thành của mình, để Tin Mừng trở thành chiếc la bàn dành cho các con đi trên xa lộ cuộc đời! Khi ngỏ lời đến nhà các con, Chúa Giêsu kêu gọi đích danh các con, như Người đã làm với Giakêu. Tên của các con thật đáng quý đối với Chúa. Tên “Giakêu” sẽ khiến mọi người nhớ đến việc Chúa ghi nhớ. Các con hãy tin vào sự ghi nhớ của Chúa: Bộ nhớ của Thiên Chúa không phải là “ổ cứng” làm công việc “chép lại” và “lưu trữ” tất cả dữ liệu của chúng ta, mà là trái tim chứa đầy niềm cảm thương dịu hiền, là trái tim đi tìm niềm vui được “xóa” mọi dấu vết tội lỗi nơi chúng ta. Chớ gì chúng ta giờ đây cĩng hãy cố gắng học theo bộ nhớ trung thành của Chúa và lưu trữ trong kho mọi sự tốt lành chúng ta lãnh nhận tron những ngày này. Trong thinh lặng, chúng ta hãy ghi nhớ cuộc gặp gỡ này, hãy gìn giữ ký ức về sự hiện diện của Chúa và những lời của Người, và một lần nữa hãy lắng nghe tiếng Chúa Giêsu gọi đích danh chúng ta. Vì thế giờ đây chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện trong thinh lặng, hồi tưởng và cảm tạ Chúa đã muốn chúng ta đến đây và Chúa cũng đã đến đây gặp gỡ chúng ta.”

Bishop McGrath will be here at St. Martin’s Parish on Sunday, August 21st to celebrate 8:00 am Mass imme-diately followed by a fantastic breakfast catered by John Nguyen of Golden Harvest Catering. Meal Tickets will be sold after each Mass.sAfter July Meal tickets price will be $10.00 each. Children under 5 years of age eat free.
