Academic Costume and Regalia

Academic gowns represent a tradition handed down from the universities of the Middle Ages. At that time, the gowns were a common dress for students and faculty. The usual color of academic gowns is black, but the official color of the junior college gown is blue.

The bachelor’s gown is worn closed and has long sleeves; the master’s gown is worn open and has slits in the elbows of the sleeves; and the doctor’s gown, also worn open, is trimmed with velvet bands.

Before their present square mortarboard design, caps were originally round. The hoods once served as cowls that could be slipped over the head for warmth. Hoods are lined with colors of the college or university from which the wearer received his or her degree. Trimming or color of the hood designates the degree.

P RESIDENT’S WELCOME

Dr. Mary S. GrahamMississippi Gulf Coast Community College

Graduates, family, and friends, welcome to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s 2021 Summer Commencement Ceremony. We welcome all of our graduates and their guests to this special event held at our Immersive Media Performing Arts Center (iMPAC) on the Harrison County Campus.

The graduates who walk across the stage are resilient and have met and overcome every challenge that has come before them. I know there is nothing that will stand in their way as they

move toward the next step in their journey. Whether their plan is to join the workforce or transfer to a university, we look forward to seeing them continue their path to success.

Commencement is not only a celebration for our graduates and their families, but for all of the faculty members and college employees who put in countless hours to make sure MGCCC was able to operate, educate, and support our students over the past year. I know the path we had to take was not an easy one, but the hard work and dedication they put forth was well worth it.

This is a special time for so many, and we thank you for allowing us to share in this extraordinary moment in your lives. Congratulations on this great accomplishment!
