In 1982, a San Francisco athletic group tries to hold a “Gay Olympics,” instigating what will ultimately become a battle at the U.S. Supreme Court and a challenge over the place of gays and lesbians in American Society. The inner workings of the Court are exposed, revealing an institution and individual justices—real people with human emotions and deeply felt assumptions—divided and in conflict

Go down below the Hawaiian Islands in a search for the hidden forces that drive the planet's largest and most active volcanic system. Follow earth scientists as they work among the volcanoes of the Big Island of Hawaii, pursuing clues and compiling evidence in a quest to shed new light on the mysterious inner Earth process that has been producing giant volcanoes in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for more than 75 million years. After years of painstaking research, startling new discoveries are made and long-standing mysteries are solved.

This 3-part series traces the American Railroad story drawn from historical accounts, authentic newsreel footage and archival photographs. Each episode crosscuts with one-of-a-kind moving train images and rare photo-graphs that follow three distinct facets of the Railroad Passenger story: the history of Locomotives, Railroad Mail Service and the Pullman Sleeper story. Supporting interviews combining oral histories with restoration participants and historians round out the series.

Between 1942 and 1945, The Poston Relocation Center in Arizona housed more than 18,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans, who worked as laborers to construct schools, farm the land and construct an irrigation system. Discover the moving and haunting stories of four former detainees. A tragic past haunts each person, now in the last chapter of their lives, as they struggle to reconcile the trauma of their youth and give voice to the sense of dislocation Japanese-Americans felt and how many of them still search and yearn to find their rightful place in the United States.

Follow the history of rock radio—from the AM deejays to the FM pioneers who fanned the flames of the '60s, to the silencing of rock radio by the government and big-business interests, to its promise of rebirth on satellite radio. Discover the story of the 50-year struggle for the soul of music radio, told by the deejays and the artists they made stars. Musicians include: Crosby, Stills and Nash, Grace Slick, Little Steven Van Zandt, Bob Weir and Ray Manzarek (The Doors). Also legendary disc jockeys talk about the hits and the history they made together.

Airplay: The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio

In his latest travelogue, Rick Steves journeys to Iran in the hopes of getting to know this ancient country—a leader in its corner of the world for 2,500 years—and to better understand the 70 million people living there. Shot in Tehran, Shiraz, Esfahan, Persepolis and villages in between, discover the country's rich artistic and cultural heritage. Visit the splendid monuments from Iran's rich and glorious past, discusses the 20th-century story of this perplexing nation and explores Iran's bustling cities, historic capital and countryside villages.

Acclaimed sculptor Brad Sells teases fine art from rough timber. A melange of art and eco-travel, trace the arc of Sells' artistic process while exploring the history, science and traditional culture of the places he visits. Emmy-winning filmmaker Todd Jarrell follows Sells from his Cookville, Tenn. studio to the forested volcanic slopes of Hawaii in a quest for the exotic koa wood, revered for its density, luster, tone and color.

Examine the religious beliefs and practices shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims to illustrate how many in the Abrahamic faith communities are dealing with historical conflicts and charts their dedication to facilitating under-standing and respect. Contrasts of the religious practices of the three faiths, including the rituals of fasting and marriage are explored, and a broad range of voices and ideas of ordinary people and respected scholars in the interfaith field are heard.
