Neighbourhood Team’s priorities;-
Potts Lane car park Crowle- Anti-social behaviour and vehicle
nuisance.
This location continues to be a problem area where bored
mainly local youths are congregating and behaving in an anti-
social manner. Some of the youths are in vehicles and
complaints have been received regarding the manner in which
some of these vehicles are being driven on their frequent
laps of the town. The Neighbourhood Policing Team and the
Roads Policing Department continue to patrol this hotspot
area and any offences are dealt with as deemed appropriate. In the past month eighteen vehicle related offences such
as speeding, driving without due care and attention, not wearing seat belts, use of mobile phones, defective exhausts
and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol have been identified and dealt with. As a result of future court
appearances it is anticipated that three young drivers will lose the licences due to the accumulation of penalty points.
Alcohol has been seized from persons in the alcohol free zone of Potts Lane car park. Applications are being made
regarding a dispersal order which will give the Police the power to move groups from this problem area.
St Oswalds Church gardens Church Street Crowle – Youths causing annoyance and anti-social behaviour.
One of the problems with moving youths on from Potts Lane car park results in displacing them to cause nuisance/
annoyance at other locations and to other residents. This would appear to be the case with St Oswalds Church
gardens. In June we have had criminal damage caused to the windows of the church. Youths seen in the area prior to
the damage being discovered have been spoken to but there are no witnesses to who actually broke the windows. A
dispersal order will also include the church yard.
Keadby Playing Field Edinburgh Road Keadby – Arson and Criminal Damage.
Fire damage has been caused to a bench seat and a lamp post has been snapped off in the park. Enquiries are still
ongoing regarding the persons responsible for the offences.
The former priority over concerns about drunken males congregating in the park on Edinburgh Road Keadby has
been resolved after those responsible have been identified and spoken to.
Two males at Crowle have been dealt with after been found in possession of cannabis. These have been given
cannabis warnings.
Working with Pc Graham Godley are your Police Community Support Officers Paul Fearon and Wendy Frear who
regularly patrols the North Ward area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please
feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via
0845 60 60 222 or by e-mail graham.godley, paul.fearon or wendy.frear @humberside.pnn.police.uk.
The police station at Epworth provides a front counter service on Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm.
The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting will be held
at the Keadby School on Tuesday 31st August 2010. Members of the public are invited
to attend this location 15 minutes prior to the meeting to meet members of the NAT
group to discuss any local issues.
A Police Surgery held the first Monday of every month in the front entrance of Tesco
Express between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The next meeting two meetings are on Monday
2nd August 2010 and Monday 6th September 2010.
The Humberside Police Events Bus was booked for Tuesday the 6th July but unfortunately developed a mechanical
fault and so we visited Ealand, Keadby and Amcotts in the Epworth Police patrol vehicles. Some residents did come
and speak with us about local concerns and provide important information about crime in the area. On Tuesday 17th
August the bus will be visiting Eastoft , Luddington, Garthorpe and Fockerby.

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
THE DRAINAGE OF THE ISLE OF AXHOLME (continued)
The most successful drain was from Tudworth to Althorpe because it carried no water from a river. Vermuyden however made some fundamental mistakes. He took two drains and the New River Torne to Althorpe instead of following the lie of the land to Adlingfleet four feet lower. In the case of the New River Torne he merely made raised banks on the surface of the land to contain the river instead of excavating the hard rock and gypsum. The lands of Vermuyden around Hatfield and Thorne seemed to have been fairly effectively drained, but surrounding areas were still flooded which were not previously. The high embankment on the Dun’s right bank protected lands to the east, but lands to the west around Snaith, Stainforth, Pollington, Sykehouse and Fishlake were flooded whereas previously they had experienced no flooding. In 1630 Richard Bridges wrote to the Lord President of the Council of the North describing the scene around Sykehouse: - “ I rode with great difficulty and danger of water; where I was, and yet am, a woeful spectator of the lamentable destruction of my native soil and country. All sorts of people in pitiful distress; some to save their lives; some their goods and cattle; some to get food for their hungry bodies”. He also wrote how mothers were trudging middle deep in water, how the floods had carried corn and hay both cut and standing away. The waters of the New River Torne proved too much for the embankments and much of the land west of Epworth was heavily flooded. The outfall at Althorpe was too small; this also helped to cause flooding. Opposition to the drainage by the local people seems to have been very extensive. The Islonians claimed that their common lands were being taken away despite the Deed of John de Mowbray granting them free use of the commons. The Islonians would also loose their fishing and wild fowling activities. Compensation of £400.00 was granted to cover this. The Islonians were allocated the lowest and therefore the wettest land in the share up. The Court of Sewers dealt with grievances about the drainage and sometimes they compelled the Participants to make improvements. The work seemed to go ahead despite their protests. Violence soon broke out. Dutch workmen were assaulted and their carts and barrows burnt. Vermuyden didn’t help matters by saying that anyone who petitioned the Privy Council in London, against him would be hanged. An embankment near Haxey was broken down fifty times says Sir Philibert Vernatti, one of the participants. Workmen were thrown into the drains and held under with long poles. Mock gallows were set up to terrify the workmen. This damage along with unforeseen difficulties and improvements left the Participants gaining little financial reward from their adventure. Continued next month Make sure you see a copy of the Arrow...

Flowers for Someone Special
Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves something nice.
I would like to nominate Mr and Mrs Howse (Marie & John). They work very hard keeping
the grass cut and keeping the fronts of the flats nice. There are tubs which they have arranged and they keep them watered and maintained. Other littler things are also no
problem, shopping, collecting prescriptions, friendly chats and their company which means a lot. Thank you. From Wendy Clayton x
The Arrow and Jackie’s Floral Designs would love to send someone special a bouquet. Listen to Trax FM in the morning to hear the nominations. Let us know who they are and why they deserve
a bouquet. Contact [email protected] or 01302 532676 with your nominations Jackie’s Floral Designs

North Axholme School Sponsored Walk
On Friday 2nd July 2010, every student and staff member at North Axholme School took part in a 5 mile
sponsored walk. This is the 2nd annual sponsored walk that the school have organised, in an aim to raise
money for the North Axholme School Fund. This fund is aimed at providing discounted educational trips
and events for the students; therefore the money raised goes straight towards their own educational ex-
periences.
The walk takes the students around different parts of Crowle, including past the rail tracks, down by the
canal and through the village. Most of the school took the walk at a good steady pace and it took approxi-
mately two hours to complete. All of the students thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the walk and are
hoping to raise a considerable amount of money.
Summer Newsletter
Our Summer Newsletter is now available to view online at www.northax.net. Inside you will find reports,
articles and photos that give you a flavour of the enormous number of activities our students get involved
in that enrich their education at school. The Newsletter has been distributed within Crowle and is avail-
able to collect from our school reception.
Photography Competition (see page 25 for details)
As you will see from the poster we are holding our annual photography competition. This was a great
success last year and we would love the community to take part so why not join in and become involved.
If you would like any further information or help downloading your pictures please get in touch with Miss
Dowdy on 01724 710368 or e-mail [email protected] after the 8th September when school re-opens.
The School term has ended and six weeks of freedom beckon. But although many children say they don‟t like school, they often find the long holiday „boring‟. Par-
ents get tired of hearing the plaintive cry, “I don‟t know what to do?” or if you able to get away,
“How much further is it?”
The older children get however, the more they worry as August approaches and important exam
results are published. Some students rejoice, others are surprised, most are satisfied. But there are
also those who are absolutely desolate.
No matter how bored the children get or how good or bad exam results may be, the good news is
that God has not gone on holiday! He is still working in the lives of individuals all over the world and
He hasn‟t forgotten those of us who live on the Isle of Axholme.
When His disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, He gave them those famous words that we
call „The Lord‟s Prayer‟. I append two versions – the traditional version and the modern translation
– and commend them to your use.
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily
bread.
And forgive us our
trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the
glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
