Remember that invitations are generally given informally. They are usually verbal, and not always given by the person hosting the event. Invitations are rarely given more than a few days in advance, and sometimes only a few hours before the event. Prepare gifts. Fruit, flowers, cakes or alcohol should be given whenever visiting someones home. On special occasions, such as a first birthday, a gift is also appropriate. When one attends a wedding, a 60th birthday party or a funeral, money in an envelope is appropriate. Prepare more food for gusts than would be necessary by Western standards. Generosity towards friends and acquaintances is important. This includes giving gifts that are worth a bit more than one might expect. Being at all stingy is impolite. Remember that drinking is an important part of social and business relationships for men in Korea. The amount of alcohol consumed at any given time is generally considerably more than most Westerners are accustomed to consuming. Be prepared to sing a song or two at any social gathering. At parties, the most honoured person is given the first chance to sing. Other people are then each given a turn. Remember that eating is done with chopsticks and a large spoon. Rice is serve don the left, and soup on the right. The person of highest status should begin the meal. Excessive talking during the meal is considered impolite. Slurping is acceptable, as a sign of enjoyment.

Remember to eat your kimchee cautiously at first as it is usually quite spicy. Kimchee is the national food made from pickled Chinese or napa cabbage. Koreans will be very pleased to see you enjoy kimchee. Remember that paying is considered an honour and also a matter of pride. Paying is done by the person who did the inviting. going Dutch is never done. If there is a question as to who made the invitation, the bill is fought over.

Dont

Waste rice. Rice is the staple of the Korean diet. Throwing away leftover rice is considered wasteful and bad luck. Tip before checking if a service charge has already been added to the bill. This is done in some first-class hotels. However, if the service at a restaurant, hairdresser or in a taxi has been especially good, a small tip would be appreciated.

Wow! may Diyos nga!

CATHOLIC FAITH:The Assumption has been a subject of Marian art for centuries. This painting is believed to be by Bartolome MurilloAccording to Roman Catholic theology and Catechism, the Virgin Mary, "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory."[1] This means that Mary was transported into Heaven with her body and soul united. The feast day recognizing Mary's passage into Heaven is celebrated as The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Roman Catholics. This doctrine was dogmatically and infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950 in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. The Assumption of Mary into heaven is also taught by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental and Coptic Orthodox Churches, where it is known as the Dormition of the Theotokos. In those denominations that observe it, the Assumption is commonly celebrated on August 15. In his August 15, 2004 homily given at Lourdes, Pope John Paul II quoted John 14:3 from the Bible as a scriptural basis for understanding the dogma of the Assumption of Mary, where Christ, in his Last Supper discourses, explained that "When I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am, there you may be also". According to Catholic theology, Mary is the pledge of the fulfillment of Christ's promise. However, many theologians disagree with this interpretation of Scripture, and believe that Christ was speaking about his preparation of Calvary and the crucifixion for the remission of punishment of sin. However, it seems fitting that Mary's body, sins. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly declared: [citation needed] The idea of the Assumption, therefore, is that Mary passed from this life to our future state being "assumed" or taken "up" body and soul into the state of heaven. There is some debate, therefore, whether the Assumption was in fact Mary's "death" or an act which by-passed death.[citation needed] In Ludwig Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma he states that "the fact of her death is almost generally accepted by the Fathers and Theologians, and is expressly affirmed in the Liturgy of the Church," to which he adduces a number of helpful citations, and concludes that "for Mary, death, in consequence of her freedom from original sin and from personal sin, was not a consequence of By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory[12] Since the 1870 solemn declaration of Papal Infallibility by Vatican I in 1870, this declaration by Pius XII has been the first and only ex cathedra use of Papal Infallibility. While Pope Pius XII deliberately left open the question of whether Mary died before her Assumption, the more common teaching of the early Fathers is that she did.[13][14]VOLUME 13 ISSUE 31

Karunungan:

Bro. Allan Rodriguez

May tulungan. Page 7

Seoul donates used computers, equipment to ManilaMANILA, Philippines - Previouslyowned computers and various pieces of used industrial equipment are expected to arrive from Korea in September, a Philippine business group said. Considered as assistance from the Busan Metropolitan City Education (BMCOE), the $6 million donation facilitated by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)were used for only a year and remain in good running condition. Besides welcoming the donation, the Philippines said that the used equipment and computers could assist many Filipinos needing training in electronics, chemical engineering, automobile and architectural design. Training will be conduced by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Used computers will be distributed to public secondary schools, state universities and colleges all over the Philippines through the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Some 3,089 pieces of technical equipment, including machinery, electronics, chemical engineering, automobile, and architectural design will be donated to local institutions of higher education by the Sung-gi Vocational Schools of Korea.

SudsBut Rita, a 21-year-old factory worker from Nasugbu, Batangas, says she doesnt mind if the submissiveness relates to performing household jobs. I wont mind the duties at home," said Rita, who married her Korean spouse ten days after the latter arrived September 4, as Philippine laws require prior to civil marriage. Tricia, 22, expressed the same sentiment. She married a 45-year-old Korean from Jeolabuk after his 16-day stay in the Philippines. Tricia said she also accepts the role of taking care of the husbands farming family. I am not against helping his family," Tricia narrates, For as long as my husband will help my family here." Tricia hopes her husband would fulfill that promise to her and her family in Pampanga, even if Koreans usually dont give their whole salaries to their wives. You dont have much of a choice" but to hope, she said. Another potential marital problem, Valencia thinks, is that Korean husbands pressure the Filipina wives to prove to be worth the money" the former spent in bringing their wives to Korea. This is what Elenita is trying to prove to her widower-spouse, a 50year-old police official who has been living with her in Manila for months already.
