Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[F-Cn] Hey, Mike. Did you manage to send off that report to Accounts

this morning?[M-Am] Yes, finally. What a relief. It’s taken me almost two days to pull

all that together. I really don’t see why they need a complete report every single week, for everyone in the department. I could have been out on the road getting more orders.

[F-Cn] Yeah, I know. They want to crack down on our expenses, but all they’re doing is creating more admin – at least for one of us. Seems crazy to me. Tell you what, as it’s such a chore, I don’t mind doing it next time if you like.

[M-Am] That would be great. Thanks.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[F-Au] Excuse me. I see from the notice over there that everything’s

an extra 10 percent off. Is that right?[M-Cn] It certainly is, madam. And that’s on top of whatever other

discount you see on the labels. Take this sweater, reduced from $49 to $24.99. Another ten percent off means that’ll be just $22.50.

[F-Au] OK, I understand. Thanks. I think I’ll keep browsing. Oh, is it just for this weekend?

[M-Cn] No, there’s another week left. It started on the 1st of the month, and runs through till the 31st. Actually, for today only, the first 50 people spending over $100 get a free gift coupon. I can go check with the manager if that’s still available for you, if you like.

Mini Test – Topics, Reasons, and Advice p48 Track 43

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] So how do you think it went, Kerry? I hope it wasn’t too

grueling. You were in there for nearly two hours![F-Am] I know. I thought it would never end. It was fine, though,

actually. I mean, he did ask about my absence record, of course, but I think I explained it OK, and I’ve met all my goals. He knows I wasn’t passing the buck.

[M-Br] That’s good. Mine’s tomorrow, and to tell you the truth I’m getting a bit worried about it. After last month’s fiasco over the Nielson contract, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t tell me to go.

[F-Am] Well, forewarned is forearmed. The key is just to make sure you know what ground he’s going to cover, and have all the answers ready. I’m sure you’ll manage OK.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] I have to say I was very impressed. I’ve driven past there for

ten years but never stopped to look, let alone go inside. That’s the first time I ever set foot in the place.

[M-Au] Yes, me too. It was a real eye-opener. No wonder there were so many people there. It was very well organized. What got me, though, was that there were all those huge contraptions whirring away, but I never thought for a moment I was in any danger.

[F-Br] Yes, and they managed to get a lot of information in, as well. It’s great they have tours like that. But to see how the whole process works, from egg to table, that was the highlight for me. And then to come away with all these free samples! They look so delicious.

[M-Au] You should bring your class from college here someday. They’d love it.

Mini Test – Locations, Feelings, and Suggestions p49 Track 44

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] This is a nice place, isn’t it? Very classy, and the facilities are

top-notch. There’s even a tennis court![M-Au] Yes, but the rooms aren’t quite as big as I’d imagined,

considering it’s purpose-built. Have you been to see your room yet? Mine’s tiny. I have no idea how I’m going to cope in there. It only holds around 20, and I’m hoping for far more.

[F-Am] I’m in somewhere called the Beaufort Suite. It’s bigger than I need, to be honest. Why don’t you ask the organizers if we can swap?

[M-Au] I don’t know if we’ll be able to. All the details are already printed in the program, aren’t they? I guess I could go and ask, though.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[M-Am] Right, you’d better get a move on if you want to make it. Do

you have everything you need?[F-Cn] Yes, yes. It’s all here. I wish you’d stop fussing. So, when I get

there, you’re sure that there’ll be someone to meet me? I don’t want to be hanging around for ages. I hate that, especially after a long journey.

[M-Am] Don’t worry. I e-mailed Danny Macintyre from personnel, and he said he’d go there himself to collect you. You can always call him when you land. His cell number’s on your itinerary. Look, it says over there the gate’s closing in 30 minutes. You haven’t even been through security yet.

[F-Cn] OK, I have to go. Bye. I’ll try to call you tomorrow.

Mini Test – Activities, Requests, and Problems p50 Track 45

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Hello. I’m due to see Dr. Wilson at three o’clock this afternoon,

but something urgent has come up and I can’t make it. It is rather important, though, so I’d like to see her soon if possible. Do you have anything before the end of the week? It’s Olivia Ellis.

[M-Br] I’m sorry. Dr. Wilson’s fully booked for the rest of the week. I can give you an appointment with Dr. Patel on Thursday at four o’clock, but if you really want to see Dr. Wilson, the only thing you could do would be to go to our website and use the booking system there. You need to register if you haven’t used it before, but there are usually slots available for next-day appointments that way.

[F-Am] Yes, I tried signing up for that just now, but it didn’t work. For some reason, it wouldn’t recognize my patient number and locked me out. Are you sure there’s nothing more you can do?

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[F-Au] OK, so if you unpack all those leaflets and stack them up on

that table, with a cover letter for each one, I’ll put them into these envelopes. How long do you think this will take?

[M-Am] Ages. There are over 500. Have the addresses been printed on the envelopes?

[F-Au] Yes. I just need to make sure the right cover letter goes into each one. They’re all arranged alphabetically so it shouldn’t be too bad. Can you keep tabs on the numbers with your calculator?

[M-Am] Sure. Don’t forget they need to be ready for the afternoon collection. It’s only an hour away. I hope we can get it all done.

Mini Test – Plans, Opinions, and Inferences p51 Track 46

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[M-Cn] How was your visit to Willoughby’s yesterday? Did they have

anything interesting? [F-Am] Well, they came up with a couple of possibilities. There’s a

place on Granville Street that sounds ideal for us, actually. It’s 3,500 square feet, with everything we need, and the price is reasonable. It’s only just come on the market. I’ve asked them for the particulars, but I’m going there this afternoon to check it out.

[M-Cn] Are you sure that’s a good idea? I mean, can you afford to take the time? We have a lot to do here, and we haven’t even started the Benson project. It sounds great, but I’d have thought it’d be better to stay here.

[F-Am] No way. Those places on Granville Street get snapped up in no time. If it’s as good as I think it is, we need to act fast.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] That was a great performance, wasn’t it? It’s the third time I’ve

been here and every show I’ve seen has been amazing. Hey, do you want one of those mugs? They look pretty good.

[F-Br] No, thanks. The ticket price was high enough without buying stuff like that. Anyway, I thought it was good, but hardly anything special, to be honest. It’s a pity our seats were so close to the front. I hurt my neck looking up the whole time.

[M-Au] Oh, I love being at the front. You feel more part of the action. I mean, you can see their faces more clearly and everything. In fact, I’m thinking of joining the rewards program they have here. You know, the more you go the more points you earn.

[F-Br] Hmm. Rather you than me.

Previewing Short Conversations p52

How to preview Part 3 short conversations Track 47 [F-Am] So let me see… that weighs just under 10 pounds. And this

one is 1.2 pounds. Where are they going? Did you say?[M-Cn] The heavier one’s for Hong Kong. They’re just sample books

so there’s no commercial value. I’d like it to get there by the end of the week, if that’s possible. It’s quite important. The lighter one’s for Singapore. There’s no rush for that so whatever the cheapest rate is would be fine.

[F-Am] Right. OK, then. I’d say you need Express Mail International for Hong Kong. It’ll be there in three to five days. And for Singapore you’ve used a Flat Rate Box, so we can send that by Priority Mail. You should allow six to ten days for that. I’ll call and check of course, but just leave them with me.

[M-Cn] That’s great. Put it all on the overseas sales account, can you? Mike said that would be OK.

Previewing – Conversation 1 p53 Track 48[M-Br] Hello, Suzie? It’s Liam from technical support. How was Japan

last week?[F-Au] Oh, hi, Liam. It was fantastic, thanks. I mean, it was really hard

work of course, because we had so much to do, but the place is absolutely amazing… and the food!

[M-Br] Sounds great. Anyway, I’m calling because while you were away we updated the servers here and I took the opportunity to install some new antivirus software on everyone’s computer. You probably recognized a blue icon at the bottom right of your monitor when you started up your PC this morning?

[F-Au] Yes, I did actually. I was wondering what that was. Thanks for telling me.

Previewing – Conversation 2 p54 Track 49[M-Am] Good evening. Is it possible to book a table for tonight,

please, in the Bradley? There’ll be six of us.[F-Cn] For tonight? Oh, I’m afraid it’s too short notice. We’re normally

fully booked at least two weeks in advance. I’ll just check the system, though… Hmm, well there’s nothing for tonight. Oh, we do have a cancellation for tomorrow night, though. At seven-thirty. Would that work for you?

[M-Am] Yes, I think it would actually. I’ll have to check with the others because it’ll be our last night here, but let’s go ahead with that for now. The name’s Sommers – that’s S-O-M-M-E-R-S. Room 1224.

[F-Cn] Very good, sir. That’s all done for you. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Previewing – Conversation 3 p55 Track 50[M-Au] You know, ever since we moved in here there’s been one

problem after another. First the air conditioning packed in, and then the roof started leaking. The amount they’re charging in rent you’d think they’d look after the place a little better.

[F-Br] Yes, it’s not very good, is it? And before we signed the lease they made all these promises about installing a video security system, repaving the tarmac outside the front… they haven’t done a thing and it’s been six months already.

[M-Au] I’m beginning to think we need to start looking for somewhere else. We only signed up for a year, didn’t we?

[F-Br] Yes, with the option of a five-year extension after that at the same rate. It might be hard to find anything as competitive as that. I’d say we speak to them first about all this, and see how it goes. We can’t carry on as we are, that’s for sure.

Mini Test – Previewing Short Conversations p56 Track 51

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] Hello. Could tell me a bit about your flexible retirement plan?

I saw it advertised on the internet recently and from what I understood I think it might be just what I’m looking for.

[F-Au] Of course. You mean our Platinum Plus plan. It’s for people who want more control, so you can decide where your money goes. Is that the one?

[M-Br] Yes, that’s it. And I think there’s a drawdown facility, too, where I can withdraw money in stages as well. Is that right?

[F-Au] Yes, that’s right. Up to a certain limit, of course. Platinum Plus is our most popular retirement plan right now, actually. OK, so if you want to sit down over here, I’ll quickly go and find the right forms and then we can get started.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Hey, Karl. You remember I said Mr. Banks from Westin

Associates will be here next week? Well, do you know somewhere nice we can go for lunch? He’s arriving at twelve and says he needs to get away by two, so it has to be fairly close.

[M-Cn] Well, I always take visitors to Franco’s—that pizzeria on the corner near the station. The food’s not great, but it’s cheap and it means they can head straight off afterwards.

[F-Am] No, I don’t like that place. The last time I went there the cutlery was filthy and I got food poisoning. Anyway, it’s not just about price. I want to go somewhere nice. Isn’t there anywhere else? I heard there was a new Moroccan place somewhere near the park.

[M-Cn] Oh yes! That’s right. Opposite the entrance. I haven’t been in, but walking past it looks pretty good, and the board outside says they have free mezze at lunchtime, which sounds fine to me. Depends if you think he’ll like kebabs and couscous, that kind of thing. Oh, you’d better check it’s open on Tuesdays.

Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] It says here that you have experience working in teams. Can

you tell me a little more about that?[F-Am] Sure. All salespeople for Clancy’s have our own jobs to do,

but we help each other when needed. So, for example, I’m usually on the floor helping customers, but when a cashier gets busy, I pitch in and help, and at the end of the day we all tidy up the store before we leave, that kind of thing. It’s a case of many hands make light work, really. The more people there are to do something, the less time and effort it takes.

[M-Au] I see. And what about any other useful skills you’ve picked up?

[F-Am] Well, I’d say being diplomatic with customers is a big one. Our store policy is no refunds, only exchanges. That can be pretty challenging, and it takes quite a lot of skill to get that across to customers and make sure they leave happy.

Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] Have you finished the proposal for Clifford College yet,

Paul? We need to get it in soon or we’ll be out of time. The deadline’s the end of the month.

[M-Cn] Well, there’s a slight problem. I worked out all the figures and it comes to over $25,000. That means it’s subject to competitive bidding. That’s their policy. I had to download a ton of documents from their website. There’s a guy called Jason Nichols who’s been very helpful, though. He’s the head of their procurement department, actually, so this afternoon I’m calling him just to confirm all the paperwork is all in order.

[F-Br] OK. It’s good he’s been advising us. Sounds like quite a rigmarole. So, there’s no chance we’ll miss the deadline, right?

[M-Cn] None whatsoever, but whether we’ll win or not is another thing. According to Jason, there are four others in the market bidding for this sports hall, including Petersons. They’ve been undercutting us for the last year, and despite our reputation that’s hit us hard, so we need to go as close to the bone as we can or they’ll run away with this one as well.

Steps to Success p57

Practice 1 Track 52[F-Am] Hello, Martin? It’s Charlene. Listen, that virus I told you was

going around at work… well, I think I’ve caught it. I’ve been ill all weekend with a fever and a pounding headache. I’m feeling really washed out, so it looks like you’ll have to present the business plan this afternoon on your own.

[M-Au] That’s OK. Sorry to hear you’re under the weather. We’ve done all the preparation anyway, so I just need to download it from your PC, I guess. It’s not on the O drive, is it?

[F-Am] No, it’s in a folder called Pack1 on my desktop. After it boots up you’ll see a shortcut, which will take you straight there. You’ll need my password, though. It’s Kimbolton20, that’s capital K and then lowercase, all one word with numbers at the end. Do you see what I mean?

[M-Au] Yes, I still have that written down somewhere from when your laptop was stolen in Vladivostok. Remember, I sent you those spreadsheets? Anyway, leave it to me. I hope you get better soon!

Practice 2 Track 53[M-Br] Hello. I phoned earlier this morning to ask if you had any

lockable metal filing boxes. You said you’d got some in black, but I can’t see them anywhere. Do you know where they are?

[F-Cn] Hmm. Well, all the filing boxes we have are over on Aisle 4. If you can’t see what you want there, then we don’t have it.

[M-Br] I’ve just been there and there aren’t any. The guy I spoke to this morning definitely said there were three left.

[F-Cn] Well, I don’t know who that could have been. Unless they’re in our discount section, or maybe over in Secure Storage instead. That’s over on Aisle 9. You could try there.

Practice 3 Track 54[F-Au] I just heard there’s been a major pile-up on I-80. Isn’t Colin

Potter driving up from Los Angeles this morning?[M-Am] He phoned to say he’s taking a plane instead. Apparently the

freeway has been closed indefinitely, so there was a scramble for tickets, of course. He has to hang around until four o’clock for his flight.

[F-Au] Wow. Is that the soonest he could get? I guess we’ll have to put the staff development session off until tomorrow morning. I’ll let everyone know and see if there’s a room available at ten.

[M-Am] Good idea. His flight takes an hour and a half, so I think I’ll leave early this afternoon and go and pick him up. He is the area sales manager, after all.

Review Test p62 Track 55

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation.[F-Cn] So, it’s been hurting for some time, you say. Hmm. Yes,

I can see swelling around the ankle joint here, and signs of inflammation around the lower calf, too. You must have sprained it very badly.

[M-Br] Yes, I did. It’s over a month now. The doctor told me it would get better, but it’s just getting worse, actually. Ouch. That’s painful.

Page 13: Audioscript - Practice the TOEIC Test · 2 Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT PART 1 – Photographs Improve Your Performance ... The pleasure cruiser is sailing under

[F-Cn] That’ll be the scar tissue where the ligaments have torn. It’s why it’s started affecting your gait, as well. You really should have stopped playing the moment this happened, and had it seen to by a specialist. The first 24 to 48 hours are critical. I’ll work on this now, but you’ll need a splint. We’ll get you started on a program of home exercises. You’ll have to take it slow and steady, though. There’s no quick fix for this, I’m afraid.

[M-Br] That’s not the news I was hoping for. There’s a competition coming up in two months, the regional semis, and I have to be ready for that.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation.[M-Am] Karen, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong here, but I can’t get

these figures to add up. Can you give me a hand?[F-Au] Sure. OK, let me see… Hmm, in the third column here you

need to insert a formula to add these three values together… like this. Then just highlight this row here and hit Enter, and it’ll put the total at the bottom. See?

[M-Am] Wow. That’s impressive. I wish I could do that. I’ve been struggling with these end-of-semester grades for ages and you managed it in seconds!

[F-Au] That’s because there was a training seminar on this last month. Didn’t you read about it on the staff room notice board? You really should sign up for some of those, you know. They’re very useful.

Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] So, for all those reasons, Mr. Jackson, I’m sorry, but we just

don’t feel in a position to authorize an overdraft extension. Particularly for a business like yours, it wouldn’t be prudent at this time.

[M-Cn] Well, that’s very disappointing. I’ve showed you how the money would be spent, and offered more than sufficient security in terms of property and other assets.

[F-Br] But again, we draw your attention to the default on the last loan two years ago. At that time you pledged your home as collateral, and frankly it’s all we can do not to foreclose.

[M-Cn] Well, I’m sorry you take that view. At the very least I was hoping for a few thousand more. In the current climate, I don’t see how you can expect me to push the business forward without any capital.

Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] There’s no direct service from Royal Park to Southbank, so

you need to change at Flinders Street and get a tram. [F-Am] OK. How long will it take to get there?[M-Au] Well, if you get the 9:43 from Platform 1, you’ll be at Flinders

Street at 9:59. Take the 64 to East Brighton or the 67 to Carnegie. It’s only a few minutes. You should be there well before 10:15. Oh, and you’ll need to get off on the corner of Grant Street and St. Kilda Road. The Malthouse Theater’s about 500 meters from there, but you’ll have to ask for directions.

[F-Am] That’s OK. I’ve already printed out the route from there. It looks simple enough. I have a student pass, so how much is an off-peak day return?

Questions 13 through 15 refer to the following conversation.[M-Am] Hello. It’s Mike Shields from Sun Valley Foods here. I’m calling

about next Tuesday. You’re due to see Mr. Macintyre.[F-Cn] Oh yes. At eleven, I think, to discuss the problems you’ve

been having with the XR20. Is that right?[M-Am] Yes. Well, actually, we’re so sick of it breaking down that we’ve

decided to buy a new labeling machine, from Dawsons. It’s going to be installed next Monday, so from that date on we won’t be using the XR20. There’s no need for you to visit any more.

[F-Cn] Oh, I see. That is a surprise. Weren’t you thinking of ordering the replacement from us?

Questions 16 through 18 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] Hey, Andrew. How come you’re not going away with your

family this summer? You haven’t taken a break for ages.[M-Am] I have too much on my plate right now, Tracey. I can’t possibly

get away. I don’t know how you guys can just walk off and leave everything. I know it’s the European way, but I’m not used to it.

[F-Br] Well, everyone needs a break, don’t they? You should try it. You’ll come back more refreshed and ready to work after a bit of downtime. I heard in the States it’s different, though.

[M-Am] Very different. We don’t take much annual leave at all. Even if you’ve worked at a company there for like ten years you might only get two or three weeks at most — and even then you’d never take it! It’s amazing that you get so much time off here. Four weeks, and all those public holidays! It seems crazy to me!

Questions 19 through 21 refer to the following conversation.[M-Cn] It says here I need to scan for a wireless signal, but when

I press the scan button nothing happens. I can’t figure this diagram out at all. Do you know how to get this to work?

[F-Au] There’s no point asking me. I have no idea about any of that. Whenever I have a problem I just give Alan a call.

[M-Cn] I’ve been trying all morning, but there’s no answer. If I don’t connect my computer to this thing I won’t be able print the minutes of the last meeting before the board gets here. There’s only half an hour left.

[F-Au] I think I saw him over at reception sorting out their fax machine. That seems to have gone on the blink again. Why don’t you go down and see if he’s there?

Questions 22 through 24 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] Hello. We’re thinking of going to see a show tomorrow night.

Could you get tickets for us, I wonder?[F-Am] Well, it’s very short notice, sir. Often the best shows are sold

out weeks in advance, but I can certainly try. What kind of thing are you interested in?

[M-Au] Oh, you know, just a standard musical. Something cheerful, that has good reviews, preferably, but it doesn’t really matter.

[F-Am] There are a couple of ticket agencies we use for last-minute bookings. I’ll call them now and see what’s available. If they have anything, I’ll have to book right away so it’ll be luck of the draw, I’m afraid. Give me your room number and credit card details and I’ll see what I can do.

Questions 25 through 27 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] Hello. I’m looking for something that can seat around 80

people, with a stage. Oh, and sides that open if the weather’s good. The forecast is OK for next Saturday, but it might be windy, so…

[F-Au] Yes, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. I’m sure we have what you want, whatever the weather! If you’d like to check our website, there are full details of all our marquees.

[M-Br] Yes, I’ve done that already. There’s one called the Calipso that looks all right, with detachable windows. And you can install lighting and things, too?

[F-Au] Yes, you can choose the lighting, furniture, tableware, layout, everything. With that model most go for a raised wooden dance floor in front of the stage. It looks great with ivy garlands and fresh flowers over the arches. We can also theme the interior linings to match your company logo. All these are additional to the base price, of course, so why don’t we look at exactly what you’re after, and then we can create a package that’s right for you?

Questions 28 through 30 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] Excuse me, sir. Can you put your suitcase on the counter over

here, please? Thank you. Can I ask if you packed this bag yourself?

[M-Am] Yes, I did. Just this morning, when I left New York. Look, it’s been a long journey and I’m very tired. We’ve already been kept over an hour just to get through immigration, and now this. Is it really necessary? I have someone waiting for me outside. They’ve been there since ten.

[F-Br] I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but this is just a routine check. Would you mind opening the bag, please, sir? It shouldn’t take a moment.

PART 4 – Short Talks

Mini Test – Speakers, Opinions, and Inferences p71 Track 57

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following talk.[F-Am] And here is one of our most famous and impressive paintings,

Claud Bergerac’s The Waiter. You can appreciate the exquisite detailing around the neck and the strong linear definition of the facial features, which serve to radiate a depth of color that is not apparent in the numerous reproductions you might have seen elsewhere. This original of course was painted by Bergerac in his surrealist phase back in 1925. Today it is considered one of his most exceptional works, using a remarkably light and subtle touch that differs substantially from the techniques of his youth. The care with which the subject is depicted has led experts to suggest this may have been the artist’s son. As some of you may know, Bergerac was married in June 1903 and Pierre, the eldest son, would have been about twenty years old at this time.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following announcement.[M-Br] Right, let’s get straight down to business. I’ve called this

meeting to discuss the restructuring plan. You may not like it, but it’s something we have to go through if we’re to grow the business and move forward. RG Consulting will be overseeing the transformation, starting with the main office in Leeds next September. They say we will need to allow four months to relocate to our new premises on Piccadilly Street in Manchester. They’re drawing up a three-phase plan to help minimize disruption. While this is going on, our operations in Stoke and Bradford will be wound up. Again, this is sad, but critical to our long-term success, and most staff will be repurposed elsewhere in the organization. To make sure our output remains steady, as we have a full order book to fill, for this period the plants in Harlow, Crewe, and Halifax will be put on a three-shift system which should more than pick up the shortfall. Now, are there any questions?

Mini Test – Locations, Reasons, and Requests p72 Track 58

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following announcement.[F-Cn] Your attention please. This is a passenger announcement.

We regret to announce that due to a signal failure the 8:53 service to Maybridge has been canceled. This line has been closed until further notice. Will all passengers for Maybridge currently waiting on Platform 3 please make their way to the station entrance, where a temporary bus service will take you to your destination. The next train on Platform 3 will be the 9:04 service to Clarkston. Passengers for the 8:59 service to Oakington and Charlesville please note this service will now depart from Platform 5. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following speech.[M-Au] I would like to start by thanking you all for coming here

tonight. I know I’ve worked at Harpers for over thirty years, but it ‘s still a nice surprise to see so many of you gathered here to see me off. One thing my time here has taught me is

that friendship and work do not have to be mutually exclusive. I’m proud to count many of the familiar faces I see around me as my friends. In my years here, I’ve worked in almost every department, from sales and marketing, to HR, research, and finally operations. It’s been an eventful and stimulating career, which must now draw to a close as I journey with my family to far-off Brisbane in search of new challenges. I will certainly take many happy memories with me. Oh, and thank you also for this wonderful set of golf clubs. As a keen golfer, I hope to put these to good use in the future. Once again, thank you for staying behind tonight to see me off. Please, enjoy the wonderful buffet our catering staff have prepared, before everything goes cold!

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following telephone message.[M-Am] Hello, Miriam? It’s Andrew, from Aqua Group. You remember

when you were here last week we discussed packaging options for our water treatment solution? You said you’d check whether the new 20-kilogram drums would be OK for this. Well, we have a customer in Boston that needs delivery before the 31st and I need an answer ASAP as this affects our quote. Obviously, we don’t want them to go elsewhere. I know you’re out of the office today, but maybe when you get this message you can ask Stuart to look into it and give me call instead? Thanks a lot. Bye.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following talk.[F-Br] OK, everyone. I think it’s time to wrap things up now. Thanks

for coming. As you know, this is the last of our Book Club meetings until the autumn. I hope you’ve enjoyed them all as much as I have, and you agree with me that our final book of this season, Memories of a Long Hot Summer by Kevin Jarvis, was an especially appropriate way to end. We now have a six-week break until next season’s program, which will begin on September the 5th. We’ll be starting with Journey to Patagonia, by Christine Chadwick. Places are limited. In fact, we have over a dozen people on the waiting list, so make sure you don’t forget to sign up before you leave or you might miss out. Have a great break, and hope to see you next time.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following talk.[F-Am] So, to sum up, obviously it’s a question of not simply offering

a great choice, but also understanding the mindset of your customers, so you can help them make the best choice. Our research shows that far more than help with visas or booking excursions, it’s the quality and location of accommodations that influences customer satisfaction the most. The more

information you can provide upfront, the better the result for your customers. For example, if you know that the rooms at the front of one hotel all look onto a parking lot, then you can guide those who value scenic views away from that choice. Getting this kind of thing right is especially important in centrally located hotels, where the better-appointed rooms get booked quickly. Likewise, if the sightseeing bus stops just outside the hotel, this will be especially handy for guests with limited mobility, or families with young children. Right, it’s nearly one o’clock, so I suggest we take a break for lunch and then reconvene here at two for your end-of-course assessment. As you know, the results will be passed back to your line managers and will form part of your performance review.

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following radio broadcast.[M-Au] Good day, folks. It’s seven a.m. here in the Sunshine State on

a glorious morning. Welcome to Ridgeback Radio, right here in the heart of Queensland. I’m your host, Mike Taylor, and this is City Watch. In just a moment we’ll go over to Simon Johnson for a rundown of the day’s weather, and then it’s straight to our eye-in-the-sky traffic reporter Jason Greene for a look at traffic hotspots around the region. Jason’s already sending in reports of a major holdup on the Pacific Highway, as well as heavier-than-normal congestion on the Kennedy Highway around Smithfield, so stay tuned for that, all you motorists out there. Later in the show it’s “Famous Lives,” of course, and this week I’ll be speaking with none other than Graham Edwards, business entrepreneur, property developer, and owner of no fewer than thirty restaurants across the state. That’s coming up in a quarter of an hour, but first, let’s go straight to Simon.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following announcement.[F-Am] Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Benny’s

Department Store. To celebrate this year’s Fashion in Philly gala, we’re pleased to offer all our customers an extra 15 percent off selected products throughout our men’s, women’s and children’s departments. That’s right, 15 percent! So be quick and take advantage of some amazing deals. Look for the red star stickers on items across the store, including all your favorite top brands! There are plenty of great deals running till closing Sunday, so don’t miss out on your share. These offers are not available online. Pick up a copy of our flyer at one of the entrances to the store – saving you time and money. And don’t forget, at two o’clock today in the Roof Terrace Cafeteria there’s a fashion show of all the latest women’s styles. Thank you for shopping at Benny’s Department Store.

How to preview Part 4 short talks Track 62[M-Cn] OK, well, that’s about it. I think I’ve shown you all the main

areas you’ll need to use: the public computer rooms, photocopying and print stations… In your Welcome Packs you’ll find details of our loan policies, off-campus access, and lots of other stuff, so I encourage you to read those carefully. Remember, you need to book the group study rooms at least three days in advance if you want to use them. And please don’t forget to respect the silent study areas. They’re mostly along the East perimeter on the main level, as I showed you. I’ve told you all about your graduate borrowing privileges. If you have any technical problems, like trouble logging in, then contact the Service Center, but for anything else don’t forget you can always ask me or any other staff member. Right, well, if nobody has any more questions, I’ll leave you to it.

Previewing – Business Talks p77 Track 63[M-Br] OK, everyone. If you’d like to all take your seats, I think it’s

time to begin. This is our fourth Networking Lunch this year so far, and it is encouraging indeed to see more people than ever here today, including so many regulars. I trust this means you are all profiting from the experience in one way or another. Our Hot Topic this time is How to use Social Media to Grow Your Business, and with us is Linda Manson from Web2Net Solutions, which is based just a few miles from where we are now. Linda will have the usual twenty minutes to present her ideas, after which we will move straight on to the wonderful three-course lunch, which I’m sure you’re all looking forward to. We’ll round up with the customary Fast Pitch session, where new members get two minutes to present themselves and their companies. I’m pleased to say we have no fewer than five new members with us today. More details on them later, but I see you all have your notebooks and pens at the ready, so without further ado, let me hand you over to Linda Manson. Linda.

Please also make sure that any baggage is safely stowed in the overhead lockers or below the seat in front of you, and that your seat belts are fastened, and your tray tables and seats are in the upright position. May I remind you that the use of cell phones and other electronic devices is strictly forbidden on takeoff and landing. In just a few moments, once the ground crew have finished loading the cargo, I should get clearance to taxi out onto the runway so we can get airborne. Shares in Eastport Resources have slumped to a five-year low as the region’s largest mining company struggles to overcome its well-publicized operational problems. Eastport shares were trading at $8.32 as of this morning, a drop of 9.5 percent. Elsewhere, good news for Denton, who have just announced the reintroduction of weekend overtime shifts for the first time in nearly three years. Citing demand for the company’s new Ambassador model, chairman Gareth Bowers told reporters the additional weekend production would result in 400 more Ambassadors per shift, with a scramble to get the cars to dealers across the country, caught unawares by unprecedented interest from consumers. And finally, police investigating the suspicious fire at an Arco TX oil refinery say they have found evidence of tampering with equipment, which may have led to the blaze. Bosses have been quick to point the finger at disgruntled employees, angry at losing benefits. More on that story later.

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following talk.[M-Cn] Welcome everyone. Before we begin today’s staff meeting,

I’d like to take a few moments to introduce Karen Jarvis, who’s joining us as Sales Administrator. It’s a new post set up to support our field sales reps. Karen will be our customers’ first point of contact, answering stock and price queries, processing orders, coordinating deliveries with the warehouse, that kind of thing. She’ll need to liaise with the Finance Department over any payment issues, so Kimberley has been helping her get to grips with the Kinetics software this week. Oh, and as Karen has moved all the way from Toronto to be with us, if any of you are able to show her around the city, I’m sure she’d appreciate it. Now, in case you haven’t had a chance to meet her yet, can each of you please briefly say who you are and what your role here is.

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following weather report.[F-Am] Good afternoon, I’m Danielle Carpenter. Now, starting out

the new work week for summer, a good part of the country will certainly feel the seasonal changes as heat really builds across the Midwest and the Northeast, bringing also summer showers and thunderstorms from New England down into the Southeast. In fact, storms could turn severe over a wide area of the Midwest from Iowa through to Illinois, Indiana, Michigan… So watch out in Chicago and Detroit, because you’re in the red zone there for what could be some damaging winds and hail. And here’s the heat I was talking about: fair skies and temperatures into the 90s as far north as Kansas City and even into DC, New York, and Boston. Perhaps getting a little muggy, too. A stationary front bringing more severe thunderstorms will be working further eastward through tomorrow, while in the desert Southwest around Phoenix the triple digits will continue there at a sweltering 108. Contrast that with more wet and chilly weather in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. From Seattle down to San Francisco, things are looking a lot more comfortable with light scattered showers helping to keep temperatures to the cool high 60s.

Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following telephone message.[F-Br] Hello, this is a message for Mr. Travers. It’s Trisha Perry here

from Go Explore. We spoke earlier today when you came in to ask for some brochures on South and Central America. Well, the good news is that I’ve found the one on Chile, so I’ll mail that to you as promised. You said you were interested in

the North to South tour. I checked the price and can confirm twelve days fully inclusive, leaving from Santiago is £2000: that’s with flights from London Heathrow included. You’ll have to be quick, though, as they said there are only two more places left on next month’s tour. Call me if you want to go ahead and I’ll put a block on that for you. Oh, and there’s a three-night trip to Easter Island you might be interested in as well while you’re there. From what you said, there should be just time to add that on to the start or finish. OK, that’s about it. I’ll wait to hear from you. Bye.

Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following recorded information.[F-Au] Welcome to Excel Corporation. You have reached our

automated service status hotline. Due to damage caused by an electrical fault at our Primrose Hill plant, there is a loss of some PSTN, ISDN, and dial-up services to customers in Bayswater, Hermidale, Frinton, and Lake Hinds. We are working hard to restore the service as quickly as possible, and apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing. The estimated clear date for repair works is Wednesday the 28th. Customers in the Langton and Starville Creek area may currently be unable to place or receive calls. This is because of essential maintenance at the central exchange in Burnaby. Customers in these areas are advised that normal service should be resumed before 3 p.m. today. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Any broadband customers in Cobar affected by last night’s outage whose connection has not been restored should make sure all cables are attached securely, and restart your modem or router. Engineers have now repaired the fiber optic cable and normal service has been resumed. There are currently no other known problems with NetworkOne services. If you are experiencing problems not mentioned in this message, please contact our Customer Services team at 555-9080-2345. Thank you for your call. Goodbye.

Steps to Success p83

Practice 1 Track 69[M-Am] Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to

Hammond Center in Cincinnati for today’s NlR Champions League semi-final match between the Cincinnati Eagles and the San Diego Cubs. Action begins in just a few moments. Please be aware that the use of flash photography, tripods, and electrical cords is strictly prohibited, along with the videoing, reproduction, sale, or retransmission of any images. Your cooperation is appreciated. In the interests of spectator safety, in the event of evacuation, all persons must immediately proceed to the nearest sector exit. Emergency exit signs are positioned around the stadium. Should you require special assistance, please identify yourselves to our security staff now. Remember that when play is in progress, pucks will leave the ice surface at a high rate of speed. To help avoid injury, please stay alert at all times. And now, what we all have been waiting for, the players that you have come to see battle it out for success today: it’s time to welcome the teams!

Practice 2 Track 70[F-Br] And there’s one last thing I need to tell you all about just

before we finish up here. Last, but not least, as they say. You may have heard rumors already, but after Jim Cranshaw’s inspection last month, it’s been decided by head office that the sales and marketing departments need to be combined, and a separate, new business team set up to focus on building our capacity in emerging markets. These changes will help ensure we maintain a sustainable and robust structure going forward, and allow us to actively safeguard the future of the organization as it develops. There’ll obviously be

Page 17: Audioscript - Practice the TOEIC Test · 2 Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT PART 1 – Photographs Improve Your Performance ... The pleasure cruiser is sailing under

more on this later, but for now please just tell your staff that no redundancies are planned as part of this reorganization. Quite the opposite, in fact: we’ll be looking to take more people on, and certainly relocate some people, so if anyone’s keen on moving to our Shanghai office, they should tell their line managers. To encourage volunteers, there’ll be a 10 percent salary bonus paid for those wishing to do so.

Practice 3 Track 71[M-Au] Hello. This is Chris Bryce from the Department of Engineering

at West Plymouth University. I will be out of the office from the 12th until the 19th of this month, attending the World Engineering Trade Fair in France. Please leave your name, number, and a brief message, and I’ll get back to you on my return. I will not be checking my voicemail while I’m away, so if your call is urgent press 0 now to reach my secretary, Caroline, who can redirect your call to another member of the department. Alternatively, you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you.

Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following advertisement.[M-Cn] This weekend, don’t miss the Lanark County Cruise-In:

Canada’s biggest and best car show. Just come to Uplands Park for a whole heap of fun for all the family. We have over 2,000 classic cars on display, great live music from Martin Redman and the City Slickers, and a host of celebrity appearances by the likes of soap star Heather Jarvis, and TV’s Trucks and Tractors presenter Ned Wilkins. See the amazing Amphicars race on water, and watch in awe as the Vintage Tractor Troop show off their precision driving skills, performing to a good old square-dance routine each day at 3 p.m. Cadillacs, Mustangs, hot rods—we have it all. KidsCar zone, specialty car parade… you name it, we have it. Book now to avoid disappointment. Call 555-921-4731. Rain or shine, the fun starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Don’t miss it!

Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following recorded information.[F-Am] Thank you for calling Hayfield Dental Practice, serving the

West Metro area since 2006. We provide caring dentistry for the entire family. Using the latest technologies and treatment methods, our dedicated team of doctors and friendly support staff are committed to providing you and your family with the very best in quality care. For more information on our services, visit our website, at hayfielddentistry.com. We appreciate your call today, and look forward to assisting you momentarily.

Questions 7 through 9 refer to the following talk.[M-Br] And finally, all that remains is for me to welcome Gabbie Clark

to our team. Gabbie is actually being seconded to us from Peter’s department, as you may know, to cover for Sharon Wilbers, who is of course on maternity leave. While Gabbie is fully trained and familiar with court procedures, she lacks direct experience of drafting legal documents of the kind we need here in our department, and so she’ll need a little help from all of you at least at the start as she adapts during her time here. She’ll handle and draw up much of the paperwork in divorce actions and bankruptcies, and carry out legal research for myself, Martin, and Stacey. I’d like to ask you all to help oversee Gabbie’s transition to us.

Questions 10 through 12 refer to the following radio broadcast.[M-Am] And now with the time just coming up to 2:15, it’s the part

of the show where we turn to you, the listeners, and ask for your opinions. So, if you’ve been affected by any of these issues, particularly by homelessness or debt, then give us a call here in the studio and tell us about it. Our special guest tonight is Dr. Clair Farah, from the Institute for Welfare Studies, and she’ll be happy to hear your views and give her advice. Who knows, you might be able to help some other listeners out there to really change their lives. So call us at the usual number, 800-555-0180, or e-mail, tweet, whatever, and we will get your question to Dr. Farah. She’ll be here for the rest of the show, so you have 45 minutes to get in touch and ask your question or just share your experiences. Once again, that number is 800-555-0180. And now, here’s a song that I think you’ll all recognize: it’s Leo Jasper and “Inner City Blues.”

Questions 13 through 15 refer to the following announcement.[M-Au] Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, First Officer Winslett

speaking. On behalf of Captain Lorrimer, it is my pleasure to add our welcome to that of Kevin, your cabin services manager, and his crew, aboard Air Express Flight AE345 to Canberra. We’re currently climbing through 20,000 feet on our way to 35,000 feet. The seat belt sign has been turned off and you are now free to move about the cabin. We’re expecting mostly smooth conditions enroute, but please remember it is a requirement that whilst seated, you keep your seat belt fastened, in case we encounter any turbulence. Our flight time from Perth today is an estimated four and three-quarter hours, so allowing for the time difference we expect to arrive into Canberra at 21:45, which is 19:45 local time. The weather in Canberra is a very cool 14 degrees Centigrade: that’s 57 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ll come back to you just prior to our descent with an update of the weather and arrival time, but for now, please sit back, relax, and enjoy the in-flight service.

Questions 16 through 18 refer to the following short talk.[F-Br] OK, everyone. It’s just before nine so we should be at our first

stop very shortly—Windsor Castle. A few reminders: Entry into the castle is included in your tour ticket, so stick with me when we get off and I’ll get you straight in. You’ll have almost two hours to look around. Remember, we’ll meet back at the same place we drop you off at—just outside the visitor center. That’s ten to eleven, to watch Changing the Guard. Then at eleven we’re off to our next destination, Stonehenge, where we’ll stop for an hour, which is enough time to soak up the atmosphere and get some good photos, and then finally on to the lovely city of Bath. It’s going to be a full day. Right. In just a few moments we’ll be pulling up at the entrance, so make sure you have all your valuables with you, and please, don’t be late getting back. If you have any problems, just call me on the number on your itinerary sheet.

Questions 19 through 21 refer to the following speech.[F-Cn] It’s great to be here in this wonderful facility. I’d especially

like to thank Professor Ramirez for inviting me, and of course all of you, too, for taking time out of your busy afternoon to turn up! Over the next hour, I’m going to talk to you about how we can help facilitate a more modern and integrated working environment, using the next generation of servers. I’ll explore the challenges that professionals face in delivering high-density applications, and I’ll give an overview of new capabilities that support delivery and increase efficiency in data centers. We’ll look at how to embrace the cloud, including scalability and elasticity, both securely and cost-effectively. These are key to achieving operational excellence. Our goal at SoftTech is to partner with you to help embrace the consumerization of I.T. and lower your infrastructure costs, to unleash productivity, innovation, and competitive advantage. We can help you achieve programming symmetry

between your on-premises and cloud environments, so you can build solutions that suit you. So let’s start by showing you how the Win4000 server can give you the future-proof edge you need.

Questions 22 through 24 refer to the following telephone message.[M-Au] Oh, hello. This is Charles Fletcher from Tysons. We received

your e-mail saying the pepperoni pizza you’d bought was actually cheese and pineapple. We’re obviously very sorry to hear that, so please accept our apologies. As this is an own-brand item, we’re taking this very seriously indeed. If you have kept the box it was in, could you please return it to us, preferably to the store where you got it from? We can then use the bar code and other identification symbols to trace which of our suppliers it comes from, so we can find out what went wrong. This is urgent, so we’d really appreciate it if you could do this as soon as possible. As a sign of our thanks for bringing this to our attention, we’d like to give you a $30 coupon. I’ll enter this into our system here, so whichever store you go to just tell the customer service desk code YTN78—that’s YTN78—and they’ll give you the coupon. If you can’t take it back in person, then call me on my direct line, 555-2323-6797, and I’ll take the details from you over the phone. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

Questions 25 through 27 refer to the following news broadcast.[F-Am] Welcome to Business Hour. I’m your host, Mandy Chen. Our

top story tonight is the intensifying government investigation into insider trading at Brinton International. At least ten current or former employees, including founder and C.E.O Nicholas Heston, stand to be subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury next month. Some sources are suggesting the scale of illegal trading at the $10 billion hedge fund firm may even have been underestimated, with one analyst predicting profits as high as $300 million netted by the illicit scheme. Concerns over trading decisions at Brinton International arose two years ago, although prosecutors put the delay in building a criminal case down to the complexity and sheer scale of the fraud. Meanwhile, Heston remains defiant, and continues to maintain his firm acted appropriately. On the advice of his legal team, he is expected to invoke his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself. We’ll have more on this as the story develops.

Questions 28 through 30 refer to the following talk.[F-Br] Please take your seats as quickly as you can, everyone.

It’s already quarter past eleven and we only have this room booked until twelve. It’s not fair on Sam to hold things up any longer. I’ll hand you over to her in a moment, but first let me explain the purpose of this Meditation and Energy workshop. Working in a very busy call center is a pressurized, 24/7 job, and stress levels are understandably high. Stress in the short term is positive, but long-term effects can be debilitating and affect not only your health, but your ability to do your job to the high standards our customers expect. Over recent months, customer satisfaction levels have been dropping and that’s one of the reasons why I’ve contracted EnergyPlus to deliver these workshops. They’re the UK’s leading experts in employee well-being, and run this kind of program at numerous other companies across the country, including our main rival Mirabel. It’s taken a big chunk out of my budget for this year, so please take this seriously. Now, over to Sam.

21. [F-Am] Pass me that magazine, would you? [M-Au] (A) Yes, I would. (B) Do you mean this one? (C) I passed it last week.

22. [M-Cn] Is that your final offer? [F-Am] (A) It’s the absolute best we can do. (B) No, the offer has been extended until Friday. (C) The final starts at two o’clock.

23. [F-Au] How many people do you reckon will turn up? [M-Am] (A) It’s not their turn yet. (B) There were too many to count. (C) We’re expecting over a hundred.

Part 3 p98 Track 75

Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] It was all right until about ten minutes after I came off Route 4,

and then I heard a knocking sound coming from the engine somewhere and suddenly all this smoke started coming out. I pulled over right away. It was pretty frightening, I have to say.

[M-Cn] It’s just as well you called us when you did. The engine’s been overheating for some time, by the looks of it. It’s probably just a faulty pump or thermostat, but you won’t know until we get it to a garage.

[F-Am] How long will all that take? I have to be in Glens Falls by three.[M-Cn] It’ll be half an hour to the nearest garage from here; then

they’ll need time to check it over. The repair shouldn’t take longer than an hour or so—if they have the right parts, that is. You might want to rent a car while they do it, I suppose. Or get a taxi, of course.

Questions 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] I’ve been looking through your online catalog and I’m

interested in the Velco wireless router at $159. It’s item number 23984. Can you tell me whether that qualifies for the free coffee maker? That’s your special this month, isn’t it?

[F-Am] Yes, but you need to spend over $199 to get one of those, I’m afraid. You’re not short by much. We have Renko multipurpose paper on sale this month—ten reams for $22.50— so you could get two of those. Or we have Wilsons Anti-Virus Pro on sale for just $45 right now. And there’s our own brand of toner cartridges, of course, which are buy one, get one free.

[M-Au] Hmm, what about the Calypso mobile storage cart? That’s 98751. We’ve been thinking about getting that for a while, so we could add it to this order, I guess. It’s $49, right?

[F-Am] Yes, that’s right. So, would you like to go ahead with that? If you order today you can get delivery by Friday.

Questions 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] I bought these a couple of days ago on my credit card, but I’d

like my money back, please. Here they are. I have the receipt.[F-Au] Oh, OK. These are really popular, actually. Can I ask what’s

wrong with them?[M-Br] They felt OK when I tried them on in here, but when I got

home and wore them in the garden for a while they started to hurt my feet. I got blisters, and could hardly walk.

[F-Au] Oh, right. The problem is they’re marked. You see here? And here, on the sole? There are grass stains on them. I’m sorry, but I can’t give a refund, and I doubt I’ll even be able to exchange them in this state. There’s nothing wrong with the manufacturing quality, and they’ve clearly been worn, but I’ll go and check with the manager.

Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.[F-Cn] Hello, Simon. Please come in. It’s good to see you again.

Now, what can I do for you?[M-Am] Well, you know I’ve been working with Sean for the last couple

of months, on the Robinson case?[F-Cn] Yes, that’s right. They renewed their appeal against conviction

for money laundering, didn’t they? How’s all that going?[M-Am] Fine, fine. That is, the casework is going fine, and we’re on

schedule so far, but sharing an office with Sean is a bit of a nightmare, to be honest. He’s incredibly loud on the phone,

and I find it very off-putting. If I’m to focus properly and pull together a robust defense before we go to trial, I really need an office of my own.

Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Hello, Mr. Jackson? It’s Selina Griffiths here, from Bradbury’s.

I’m just calling to let you know that it’s all arranged for three o’clock this afternoon.

[M-Au] You mean the one on Lexington Avenue? [F-Am] Yes, that’s right. The Colonial-style property I told you about

yesterday. I think it would be perfect for you. As I said, I went last week. It has everything you’re looking for: a gourmet kitchen, gorgeous family room, three bedrooms, vaulted ceilings, wall-to-wall carpeting throughout… you’ll love it.

[M-Au] Sounds great. Can you e-mail me a map? I have a meeting that finishes around two across town, so you’ll have to excuse me if I run a little late. It depends on the traffic, but I’ll definitely look forward to it. Thanks.

Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] How do you think it went, Andy? [M-Au] Oh, it was OK, I guess. There were quite a few tricky

questions, and I hadn’t had as much time to prepare as I would have liked, but I guess I did all right in the end. I’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

[F-Br] Hmm. Well, at least it’s over now. You were in there for ages![M-Au] Yes, well over two hours. I didn’t think it would be so long, to

tell you the truth. There were three of them in there and all I can remember is their faces! I wish I’d given a better account of myself, but there’s nothing I can do about it now.

Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation.[M-Cn] Hello. Can you tell me about Waverley Gardens, please? I’m

thinking of going there tomorrow with my family, and I told them I’d find out about it first.

[F-Am] Oh, it’s a great day out, especially for wildlife enthusiasts. There’s a huge safari park, with over 2,000 animals; elephants, cheetahs, lions, meerkats—they’re very popular, of course. There are lots of rides too, and shows. Here’s a brochure you can take, if you like. The directions are on the back.

[M-Cn] Great, thanks. Wow. There sure is a lot to do. We can probably only spare an afternoon, though. What would you recommend?

[F-Am] Hmm, well. You need a full day at least really. But, if you don’t have that much time, I’d say go for an Explorer Pass. That’s the cheapest ticket, but it will get you into the main animal park, and there’s more than enough there for a few hours.

Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] Hello. Are you Mrs. Parsons?[F-Cn] Yes, thanks. I was expecting you earlier, actually.[M-Br] I know it says before twelve, but there’s been a big holdup. I

called twice, but couldn’t get through. Anyway, here you are. Be careful; it’s heavy. Can you just check the details and then print your name and initial here, please? And put the time, if you can. It’s one-fifty.

[F-Cn] OK. Here you go.

Questions 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation.[M-Am] Hey, Stacey. Have the auditors finished their report yet? Do

you know? [F-Au] Apparently they’re almost done. I spoke to Gavin Helmsley

this morning and he said he and his team should be finished by the end of the week. I don’t know why it’s taken so long.

[M-Am] Neither do I. We’re relying on this to boost our chances of more funding. That’s the whole point of getting an external audit—to get investors interested in the company. We won’t be able to raise the money we need without it.

Page 21: Audioscript - Practice the TOEIC Test · 2 Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT PART 1 – Photographs Improve Your Performance ... The pleasure cruiser is sailing under

[F-Au] I know. But he confirmed everything was in order, and the return to growth this year should show a net cash position. We have a pretty healthy balance sheet, so I’d say we’re going to get a thumbs-up all round. We won’t know for sure until Friday, though.

Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Is this really the best they can do? We’ve been waiting for over

two months, and this is what’s finally come back.[M-Au] I agree it’s hardly impressive. They don’t seem to have

changed that much, and what they have changed has just made things worse, in my opinion.

[F-Am] You can say that again. The old design was much more vibrant. Basically, all they’ve done is change the color and font style, and move a few pictures around—but it looks so dated. It doesn’t exactly show our new range of products off to their best advantage, does it?

[M-Au] And did you see their invoice? They’re asking for over $800. I think you should send them an e-mail asking how on earth it came to all that. It’s way over the quotation they sent, and there’s no way we can go ahead and print this as it is.

Part 4 p101 Track 76

Questions 71 through 73 refer to the following talk.[F-Au] OK, folks. Spread out, and make sure there’s some space

between you all. I’d like to welcome Peter Havers, who’s our speaker for tonight. As we know, the economic downturn means that many of us have had to give up our gym membership—but that doesn’t mean we can’t maintain our fitness. Peter will show you that you don’t need a gym membership or a personal trainer to keep fit and healthy. He’s here to demonstrate some great exercises which we’ll all try out together, so we can learn how to work out on a budget. Now, I see that most of you have followed my advice and have dusted off your sports clothes for this evening. That’s great. OK, so let’s start walking on the spot to warm ourselves up. Just quickly before Peter begins, I want to show you this; it’s a pedometer, and it’s a great gadget to have because it monitors your movement every day. Peter agrees with me that you should try to get one as it will motivate you to keep moving—that’s the key to keeping fit. The recommended number of steps per day for people over 65 is 8,000, they say, so that should be your target. Now, I can see you’re all raring to go. I’ll hand over to Peter.

Questions 74 through 76 refer to the following answering machine message.[M-Cn] Hello, Mrs. Shibata. This is Raymond Mitchell speaking. I

know I agreed to start on your office next Monday, and I said I would buy the paint before then, but I was just in the hardware store and the assistant told me that the color you chose for the walls, Golden Dawn, had been discontinued. Perhaps you could look at the color chart in the brochure I gave you and see if there’s another color you’d like instead. I suggest Caramel Toffee, which is similar to Golden Dawn, although a bit darker, or Apricot Sorbet for a lighter feel. If you can call me back with your answer as soon as possible, then I’ll be able to get the paint and still start Monday.

Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following talk.[M-Br] Thank you to our four panelists for a very interesting

discussion. You all argued your points most eloquently, and it was clear from the audience’s questions and comments that they found it very interesting. Many people here tonight are parents of pupils, and there’s a large contingent of our teachers too, so they will have listened with great interest to your different parties’ plans for education policy. I certainly don’t intend to be partisan, so I’ll just wish you all the very best of luck in next month’s election. That ends the official part

of the evening, so now I’d like to invite you all to the cafeteria, where drinks and snacks are available.

Questions 80 through 82 refer to the following advertisement.[M-Am] Calling all builders, plasterers, bricklayers, and plumbers. You

work hard, but did you ever stop to think how hard your hands have to work, too? Just imagine what they have to put up with every day. To make sure you take care of your hands, use Best Mate. Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following report.[F-Am] Good evening. I’m Lisa Perez, and you’re listening to Sports

Hour here on KFZ Radio. We start with breaking news of the resignation of Los Angeles Cougars head coach Chuck Ramsey. Ramsey earlier stormed out of discussions with club officials, and at a press conference called later at his home, the 64-year-old tried hard to keep his emotions under control as he announced he was leaving the club after almost two decades of head-coaching the Cougars, citing personal problems. However, few believe this to be the real cause, with most pundits agreeing with Ramsey’s longtime friend and former teammate Sam Cannadine. Cannadine has put the move down to a bitter dispute with Cougars trustees, who expressed their displeasure at the controversial signing earlier this season of running back Kevin Heekin by cutting Ramsey’s salary a full 10 percent. A replacement for Ramsey has not yet been announced, but sources suggest former playing legend Steven Darcy might be in the running. More on that, and other news, after these commercial messages.

Questions 86 through 88 refer to the following recorded message.[M-Br] Welcome to the National Customs and Excise Duty Helpline.

Please be aware that we are currently experiencing technical problems with our automated revenue mailing service, and you may have received a notification of assessment asking for payment in error. If you have already sent in your payment, please ignore this notice. Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following announcement.[M-Au] Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Adelaide Airport. The local

time is 3:45 p.m., and the temperature is a pleasant 16 degrees Celsius, with a light northwesterly breeze. For your safety, we ask that you please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the captain has turned off the Fasten Seat Belt sign. In the meantime, could I ask you to please check around your seat for any personal belongings you may have brought onboard with you, and when we have parked at the gate and it is safe for you to leave your seats, please use caution when opening the overhead bins, as heavy articles may have shifted position during the flight. If you require assistance,

please remain in your seat until all other passengers have disembarked from the aircraft. On behalf of Express Airlines and the entire crew, I’d like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you onboard again in the near future. Have a nice afternoon.

Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following talk.[F-Cn] Honored guests, entrepreneurs, members of the business

community, ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pride to be here today, to judge one of the most prestigious business awards in the province—The Alberta Enterprise Award. Throughout the course of this morning, we have heard many shining examples of innovation and entrepreneurial flair. All eight finalists have shown the talent, energy, and above all, the sheer dogged determination needed to achieve success, and I wish all of them continued achievement going forward. It’s been a very tough call to name a winner. In fact, I’d say it’s the closest final we’ve had in the history of the competition. But, a winner there must be… Well, they say fortune favors the brave, and indeed it takes a lot for one individual to single-handedly create, develop, and then take forward to production a dream she had as a small child. Her example and leadership are an inspiration to us all. As you’ve probably guessed by now, the winner of this year’s Alberta Enterprise Award is… Amanda Hargreaves, for her Happy Hana range of designer porcelain figures. Congratulations, Amanda! Would you like to come onstage and say a few words?

Questions 95 through 97 refer to the following announcement.[F-Br] You probably know that exposure to UV radiation from the sun

is one of the major causes of skin cancer, but did you know your skin can burn in as little as 15 minutes? The heat here in Seville is pretty extreme in August, so even if you’re not going to be spending a long time in the sun, you still need to protect your skin. I don’t want to hear of anyone getting heat rash, exhaustion, or even heat stroke while we’re here. You should all have brought your sun cream—and those with children should be using factor 25 or higher, and make sure it’s waterproof of course if you intend swimming in the hotel pool. Try not to be outside between eleven and three if you can help it. That’s the time to buy souvenirs, visit museums, have a siesta, or just take a long lunch. If you do find yourself out in the sun, try to use the shade of buildings and trees as much as you can. Wear long-sleeved tops to protect your arms, and a broad-brimmed hat, and don’t forget your sunglasses. Oh, and one last thing, remember to drink lots of water. In this heat, you should be drinking half a liter every hour.

Questions 98 through 100 refer to the following radio broadcast.[M-Am] Good morning. I’m Alan Nicholson, and you’re listening to

Start Right on KYT Radio Portland. The time now is ten-thirty on a bright and beautiful day here in the City of Roses. Coming up in five, I’ll be speaking to Crystal O’Hara who’s with me here in the studio. Crystal of course came out on top in last night’s Dance Academy, which I’m assuming you all watched. An absolutely amazing performance, and thanks to her success she’s off to New York next month to study at the Center for Performing Arts. What about that, folks? Then at eleven we’ll go over to William Stabler for a look at all the region’s sports, and after that it’s the latest movies and cultural events with Clara Brandon in this week’s “What’s On?” So stay with us, folks, as we take you right through to noon here with Start Right on KYT Radio Portland. First, let’s hear from Trisha Stevens for a roundup of all the local and national news.

26. [M-Au] Shall we take a break now? [F-Cn] (A) Yes, I could do with some coffee. (B) I received mine earlier, thanks. (C) It broke last September.

27. [F-Am] Isn’t it about time we left for the airport? [M-Cn] (A) We have a few minutes yet. (B) You need to turn right for the airport. (C) There’s hardly any left, I’m afraid.

28. [M-Am] What have you been doing since you quit your job? [F-Br] (A) Three months ago. (B) I’d worked there for over two years. (C) I’ve been retraining as an accountant.

32. [F-Am] You’re going to the I.T. workshop, aren’t you? [M-Au] (A) It depends on when it is. (B) No, I work in a library. (C) It was very useful.

33. [M-Am] I was wondering if you had any books on telemarketing? [F-Cn] (A) I never tried it. (B) Did you look in the business section? (C) I prefer to watch television.

34. [F-Br] Whose turn is it to make the coffee? [M-Am] (A) That’s very kind of you. (B) You should have turned it off. (C) I can’t remember, but I’ll do it.

35. [M-Au] It wasn’t a very good movie, was it? [F-Am] (A) Hopefully, the move to our new offices will be better. (B) No, it was rather disappointing. (C) We went to the concert last night.

36. [F-Cn] Do you calculate your tax on a calendar-year basis? [M-Am] (A) I’ve already filed my tax return. (B) No, we use a fiscal year. (C) It only lasts six months.

37. [M-Au] Are you ready to process these orders? [F-Br] (A) No, I wasn’t. (B) I’ll order a new one. (C) Yes, I’ll do it right away.

38. [F-Cn] Could I have a word with you if you’re free, please? [M-Br] (A) Why don’t you look it up in a dictionary? (B) Yes, of course. (C) It wasn’t so expensive.

39. [M-Am] Do you want confirmation by letter or is an e-mail OK? [F-Br] (A) I’d prefer both, if possible. (B) I’ll send you one if you like. (C) This isn’t the right address.

Part 3 p278 Track 79

Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Hey, Joseph. The vice president wants the quarterly sales

report on his desk first thing tomorrow morning, and I didn’t get a chance to finish it yet. I have a meeting soon, so can you find this month’s sales figures for me and add them to the report? I e-mailed a draft to you.

[M-Cn] Yes, sure, Ms. Moreno. Do you want me to print it out when it’s finished?

[F-Am] No, Mei-ling needs to check everything first. Just send it to her and ask her to print the final copy.

[M-Cn] No problem. I’ll do it right away.

Questions 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Ms. Kwan, especially as I

know this is the busiest time of year for television networks. [F-Am] Yes, I’ve just come from a meeting with some of our main

advertisers. They were really excited to hear about our new schedules for the fall.

[M-Au] But you’re not doing so well with younger viewers, are you? Your viewership is going down, right? And that’s because the all-important 18–49 demographic group is watching less.

[F-Am] Well, we have a new drama series starting next Sunday evening that will keep the 18–49 group glued to their television sets every Sunday from now until the end of the year. We’ve also acquired some great movies. We’re confident these measures will help turn things around, so will you ask me that question again in a couple of months’ time?

Questions 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] Hi, I want to reserve a place in the center’s Fit After Forty

course, but before I sign up, I just want to check that the course will be suitable for me. I’m 58.

[F-Cn] Yes, for sure. We call it Fit After Forty, but there are plenty of people in their 50s and 60s in the class. Are you fit and healthy? That’s the main thing.

[M-Br] I’ve got the usual stiff hips and joints, but that’s probably because I don’t exercise enough. I’d say I’m in pretty good shape, on the whole. I’m not overweight or anything.

[F-Cn] Well, tell the instructor about any health problems, and don’t overdo it. The important thing is to work at your own pace. Shall I swipe your credit card? Then we can schedule you for an assessment.

Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] Excuse me. Will you sign for this package for Mr. Ishikawa

next door? I just rang the bell but there’s no answer.[F-Am] The apartment next door is empty. The guy who was living

there moved out a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know where he went, I’m afraid. He was from Tokyo, I think, so perhaps he went back to Japan.

[M-Au] Well, in that case I’d better take the package back to the post office. They’ll probably contact the sender.

[F-Am] Do you have any mail for me today? I ordered some books last week but they still haven’t arrived.

Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.[M-Cn] Just a moment please, madam. This ticket is dated yesterday.[F-Au] What? Is that the wrong one? It can’t be. I bought it this

morning. I hope I didn’t throw it away thinking it was yesterday’s ticket. Let me look in my pocket. No… Wait a moment, please—I know it’s here somewhere. I just can’t remember what I did with it. I’ll have a look in my purse.

[M-Cn] Well, sorry. I can’t allow you through to the platform without a valid ticket. Can you move to one side, please? There’s a long line of people behind you.

Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] This headset doesn’t work properly. I can hear everything all

right, but the person on the other end of the line can’t hear me. It must be my mic.

[M-Am] Hmm. When did this happen?[F-Br] It’s been fine all morning. It’s just the last few calls I’ve had

trouble with. [M-Am] I’ll give you another headset. Here, this one’s a spare. Try

it out now and let me know if it works. If not, then it’s the settings on your computer that have been changed somehow, so we’ll have to call technical support and get them to configure it correctly.

Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation.[F-Cn] Hello. How can I help you?[M-Br] Er, yes. I have a reservation under the name Stevens. It was

made ten days ago, over the Internet, I think. The confirmation number is GHY34.

[F-Cn] I see. Just one moment… Yes, here we are. Mr. Stevens. We have you in our system. That’s one double room for single occupancy, without breakfast.

[M-Br] Yes, that’s right. I have to leave early tomorrow morning for a conference in London. Can I have an early-morning call around five-thirty? My flight is at nine.

Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Electronics Monthly, Customer Care department. Veronica

speaking.[M-Au] Hello. I’m a subscriber to your magazine, and I received this

month’s edition in the mail this morning… but the pages are all mixed up. Some pages are duplicated and some are upside down. It’s hopeless. I can’t really read the magazine at all.

[F-Am] Oh dear, I am sorry. That sounds like a printing problem. You probably received a misbound copy. Our production department will need to speak to the printers, but in the meantime, let me mail you another copy of this month’s issue. I’ll send it by courier this afternoon to arrive tomorrow. Would that be OK?

[M-Au] Yes, that’s great. I can wait until tomorrow, no problem. Shall I give you my name and address?

Questions 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] I’m worried about our cash-flow situation this month. That

plumbing emergency meant we had to shell out thousands on a new boiler, which was an unexpected expense.

[M-Am] What do you mean, “worried”? Sales have never been better, and we just won the Vertiflex contract, which is massive.

[F-Br] Yes, but the money from Vertiflex hasn’t started coming in yet. Other clients are late paying their bills, but we still need to pay our suppliers—not to mention the staff salaries this month. Our bank balance is very low.

[M-Am] I’ve sunk all my savings into this business and we’ve all worked very hard to make it a success. I’m not going to be beaten now. Maybe if we explain our situation to the bank they’ll increase our overdraft limit for a month or two. I’ll give them a call now.

Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation.[M-Cn] Well, thank you for showing me around. From what I’ve seen,

your factory is a perfect match for our Excel System. As I mentioned, the Excel is our bestseller, and we’re so confident about its reliability that we offer a free five-year guarantee.

[F-Br] That sounds good. As it’s within our budget, I’d like to get it installed as soon as possible. Can I just check that the control panel won’t be too complicated to operate? Most of our staff need access to the site 24/7 so we have to have a security system that’s easy to use.

Page 25: Audioscript - Practice the TOEIC Test · 2 Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT PART 1 – Photographs Improve Your Performance ... The pleasure cruiser is sailing under

Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT26

[M-Cn] That won’t be a problem. The control panel is very simple, so your staff should be able to use it with a minimum of training. Jason Vickers, the engineer who will install it, will stay on-site to give training to anyone you think needs it.

[F-Br] OK, good. Let’s go back to my office and see if we can get the paperwork sorted out today.

Part 4 p281 Track 80

Questions 71 through 73 refer to the following news report.[F-Am] Here on News Dot Com we’re taking a look at the hottest

business topics trending right now. First up, drugmaker LixoPharm has temporarily halted production of its hypertension drug Mydoxovin while it investigates the discovery of traces of bacteria in packets at several stores across the Los Angeles County area. LixoPharm has recalled all packages with expiration dates from November through December of next year. The company says that no other lots are affected, and there are no reports of patients being harmed. Current users of the drug are advised to check the expiration date on their supplies, and to take any packets affected by the recall to a pharmacy, where they’ll be replaced free of charge. There is no need to consult with your regular physician. LixoPharm’s stock slumped on news of the product recall to a three-year low.

Questions 74 through 76 refer to the following telephone message.[M-Cn] Hi, Sameer. Er, Thomas here. Thanks for the call and for the

invitation to your party next month. Sorry I’m late replying, but I just came back after two weeks in Toronto. I had to go on short notice because my mother was in the hospital. Anyway, she’s fine now, and yes… I’d love to come to the party! It will be great to see you again. I can’t believe it’s been a year since your last birthday. Anyway, I’ll be seeing you before next month, won’t I? You said you’d be at the squash club AGM on Friday, so perhaps we could catch up then over a cup of coffee.

Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following radio broadcast.[F-Am] It’s 4 p.m. and you’re listening to City Arts on WJXU, right here

on 95.5 FM, 1580 A.M., and worldwide at wjxu.org. Coming up later in the show on Book Corner, Sheridan Williams interviews Ronald Jackson, a former NBA basketball referee, about his new autobiography, Through the Hoop. On Screenshot Dan Fernandez will be reviewing the movie Diamond Sunset, and I will be speaking with director of the Boardtreaders theater troupe, John Cardioli, about their latest show premiering this evening at the Meridian Playhouse downtown. But coming up first, I’m delighted to have with me in the studio Raymond Rusedski, chief historian of the city’s Heritage Museum, who’s going to be telling us about the Museum’s forthcoming exhibition on the Midwest in the nineteenth century. Raymond, welcome.

Questions 80 through 82 refer to the following talk.[M-Br] Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Just a few things to report this

month. We had a very successful hike to Kelly’s Point. The weather was glorious, and although it was our first hike, still over twenty members came along, so I’m planning to run one hiking event per month throughout the summer. The senior Pilates group, which we only started three months ago, is now full with a long waiting list. There seems to be a strong demand so again I’m looking at expanding this perhaps to Tuesday and Thursday evenings, rather than just Tuesdays as at present. Oh, and finally, I’ve booked the Lakeland Garden Hotel for our summer garden party this year. It will be on July 23 so please make sure we promote this in the newsletter next week. A couple of reminders for you to pass on to the members: if anyone hasn’t yet paid for a place on the bus trip to Bellington Wildlife Park in August, please can you remind them to do so. Fifty-five people have signed up for it, but only

12 have paid. Also, Michael Barratt’s wife called me to say that Michael was still is in the hospital. It’s nothing serious, but there’s a get-well card being passed around, so can you make sure you sign it? OK, that’s about it from me. Back to you, Gerald.

Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following announcement.[M-Au] Good morning. May I have your attention, please. Tomorrow

there will be a bloodmobile visiting the campus from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will be located in the staff parking lot in front of the Performing Arts building. Donors of all blood groups are needed, particularly of blood types O positive and O negative. It’s a worthwhile cause, so I would encourage you to donate if you can. There’s no need to make an appointment; just walk in anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Please do not go if you have a medical condition or if you have traveled outside the country within the last three weeks. Any questions, call the Student Welfare Office today at Extension 752. OK, so now let’s begin.

Questions 86 through 88 refer to the following talk.[F-Br] We’re in the largest of the galleries in the complex of caves

now, ladies and gentlemen, and as you can see, it has some of the most remarkable examples of rock art you will find anywhere in the world. These paintings are believed to be over 10,000 years old. Incredible, isn’t it? Yet, the animals in the drawings are quite clearly recognizable. The horses, deer, and oxen look like their modern counterparts, don’t they? Make sure you take a good look while you’re here today, because the caves will be closing next month for restoration, and we expect them to be closed for at least two years. The artificial lighting that we use here has caused the colors in the paintings to fade, so expert restorers will be working to return the paintings to their original quality.

Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following talk.[F-Cn] I’d like to thank you all once again for coming today. I can

tell by the buzz of excited conversation that you’ve had a very stimulating and productive day. I’d like to thank all our presenters, too. We have heard lots of useful ideas about how to think creatively, prepare a manuscript, submit proposals, and most importantly, get our material published. Speaking for myself, I learned a huge amount about how the use of photographs can affect the success of a book. I’d now like to invite you all to join the organizers and the speakers at a reception in Conference Hall A. Shuttle buses will be available to take delegates to the train station at 6 p.m. But before we go along to Conference Hall A, can I please ask you to complete the evaluation feedback sheet that is in your conference pack, and hand it to Jo or Mike at the door.

Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following announcement.[M-Br] Ladies and gentlemen, please be aware that because of

security regulations, large containers of liquids and gels are not allowed in carry-on baggage. Small containers up to 3.4 ounces are OK, but they must be kept separate from your carry-on bag as you go through security. I have some small transparent bags for any cosmetics, perfume, toiletries, and other liquids, so if you need one please tell me. Bottled drinks aren’t allowed either, folks, so please drink up before you pass through the security check. We’re very busy today, so move along quickly and take off your coats and jackets, watches, and any large or heavy metal jewelry now. Flat sandals and flip-flops are fine, but please take off shoes and boots as you reach the screening area.

Questions 95 through 97 refer to the following advertisement.[F-Am] Are you unhappy with your electricity bills? Would you like

to get a more competitive rate? Then open an EnergyOne account with Luminex and say goodbye to overpriced electricity now. Established in 1997, Luminex currently serves

Page 26: Audioscript - Practice the TOEIC Test · 2 Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT PART 1 – Photographs Improve Your Performance ... The pleasure cruiser is sailing under

nearly 3 million residential and commercial customers across Canada and the United States. We use the latest innovative technologies to provide economical power supply and cost-effective energy solutions, bringing your prices down. You can choose between fixed-price plans and variable-price plans, or why not go for our Green Energy solution and offset the negative impact of your energy consumption on the environment? Whatever you’re after, we have a low-cost electricity plan to fit your budget. So come to Luminex and join the fastest-growing competitive retailer of energy and related services in North America. Why pay more?

Questions 98 through 100 refer to the following talk.[F-Au] Don’t even think of operating a chainsaw unless you’re

wearing the correct protective gear. You need a helmet like mine, with visor and ear muffs attached. Your face, ears, and head are then all protected, just in case the chain hits you, or branches fall on your head. Next, padded gloves. Notice the thick padded section here on the back of the hand in case the chain comes off and makes contact with your hand. Going down the body, you could wear a jacket—although that’s not essential if you’re cutting on the ground. Jackets are more important when you’re climbing. The right pants are very important, too. These are made of a rough, high-strength fabric that will immediately jam up the mechanism if the saw touches it. Your boots are very important. I’m wearing triple-lined boots, with specially reinforced lining and steel toe caps. Ordinary safety boots are not strong enough—the saw will go straight through them.

Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.[F-Cn] So, all that remains for us to finalize now is your invoice.

Would you send it to my secretary, Sarah Longford? She deals with those matters. What are your payment terms?

[M-Am] Generally 30 days, with a discount of 5 percent for early payment.

[F-Cn] OK, that seems fairly standard. Oh, before I forget. Could you please make out two invoices, one for the rental of the conference rooms and equipment, and one to cover the cost of accommodation and food? The costs come out of different budgets, I’m afraid.

[M-Am] No problem. I’ll send two invoices to Ms. Longford.

Questions 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] Did you see this month’s Innovation in Marketing yet?[M-Au] No, I hardly ever read that journal. There is too much

emphasis on technology, in my opinion, which is of no relevance to us in our business.

[F-Br] There’s an interesting article in this issue, though. It’s about different fonts used on websites and how changing the font can change readers’ attitudes toward a company and its products. I think it could come in handy the next time we get our website updated.

[M-Au] Well, it does sound interesting. May I borrow your copy? I’ll have a look at it on the train home this evening.

Questions 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation.[M-Cn] Could you fill it up, please? And would you check the oil? I’m

just going to go inside to get some coffee and a sandwich.[F-Am] Yes, sure. I’ll clean your windows, too. If you need the

restroom, it’s around the back.[M-Cn] Thanks. I’m on my way to Chicago. How much farther is it

from here?[F-Am] About 100 miles if you take the interstate from Rochelle. It’s

a toll road where you pay multiple times, so make sure you have...let’s see...$6 or so in change ready.

Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.[F-Au] How did your first day go? I can’t wait to hear.[M-Br] It was good, thanks. The people I’m with seem like a nice

bunch. [F-Au] What about the work? [M-Br] It was very busy, and noisy the whole time. I mean, the phone

didn’t stop ringing all day. Opening and sorting the mail was straightforward enough, but I also have to handle incoming calls, deal with couriers, sign for deliveries, that kind of thing. There’s no heavy lifting, though, which is good. There’s a lot to learn, but I think I’ll soon get used to it.

Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] Hello, Mr. Robertson? It’s Paula Simmons here, chief

executive of Brent Plastics. [M-Br] Oh, yes. Hello, Mrs. Simmons. I’m glad you called. Is it about

the problem at your Nottingham plant? I hope there won’t be any disruption in supply.

[F-Am] None whatsoever. I want to let you know you that it’s not as bad as the media have been making out. A few members of the design team have walked out, that’s all. The rest of the factory is completely unaffected. Production is continuing on schedule and the whole thing should blow over very shortly.

[M-Br] Oh, well, that’s a relief. We have some pretty big orders we need to fulfill. Can you put that in an e-mail and I’ll forward it to our management?

Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation.[F-Br] So, just to recap. We’re going to forget about the long-

sleeved version, and I’ll have a couple of machinists make up some short-sleeved samples in the studio in the colors we discussed. That will take them about two weeks, say to the end of the month. Shall we meet again on the 30th?

[M-Cn] No, sorry, I’m on vacation that week. Let’s leave it until next month. Does the 5th suit you? Or the following week—the 12th?

[F-Br] Earlier suits me better because I’m flying to Milan on the 14th for fashion week. Call me if you have any more thoughts, or if there’s a problem. Otherwise I’ll see you in about three weeks.

Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation.[F-Am] That was a very productive meeting. I think that everything’s

settled now. I’m certainly looking forward to working with you on this project.

[M-Au] Thanks. I’m really excited about it. It’s different from anything you and I have worked on before. Oh, let me help you on with your coat. Shall I call a cab for you?

[F-Am] No, thanks. I’m in my car. I parked at the supermarket down the street. I have another meeting now, so I won’t be back in the office until tomorrow. But I’ll call my secretary and ask her to e-mail the market research data I mentioned to you.

[M-Au] Thanks. I’ll look at that before I present all this to the creative team tomorrow.

Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation.[F-Cn] You can have your documents back now. Here you are: bill

of lading, customs invoice, and your passport. I see you’ve driven from San Francisco—that’s a long way. Are you stopping in Canada to make a delivery?

[M-Am] Actually, I started from Seattle this morning. The company’s main office is in San Francisco. I’m driving straight through British Columbia on to Alaska.

[F-Cn] In that case I’m going to have to examine your consignment. Please pull over to the examination dock on the right and open your trailer door.

[M-Am] What? Is that really necessary? There’s no way I’m going to make it on time now.

Questions 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation.[M-Br] When I agreed to the 30 percent discount I did so on the

understanding that our normal delivery period of 28 days would apply. I can’t manufacture these components and get them to you in 10 days for the same price.

[F-Au] But we approved your company’s bid expressly because you said you had quick turnaround and could meet delivery times.

[M-Br] For normal delivery, yes. But rush jobs mean I have to pay my staff overtime, or take on temporary workers.

[F-Au] Well, I did e-mail your secretary and ask her to confirm this with you before we signed. Anyway, I guess I can run this by our purchasing director and see what we can come up with. I’ll speak to her this afternoon and call you tomorrow, OK?

Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation.[M-Au] Hello, sorry to bother you at this time in the evening. I’m

calling about your vacation cabin for rent. Is it suitable for a family of five?

[F-Am] Perfect. There are three big bedrooms, a living room, and a games room with a pool table and plasma TV. The kitchen is fully equipped with a washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher, and there’s a Jacuzzi room, too.

[M-Au] Actually, my kids are only small—they’re two, four, and seven.[F-Am] Oh, then no. There’s an open wood-burning fireplace, which

would be dangerous with young children around. And there are very steep steps up to the porch, too. I have to be honest and say maybe you should go elsewhere. I wouldn’t want any accidents.

Part 4 p319 Track 84

Questions 71 through 73 refer to the following telephone message.[F-Br] Hello, this is a message for Dr. Chang. It’s Sandra from the

dean’s office at the Central College of Engineering. It’s now half past seven on Thursday, February the 12th. There’s a group of students sitting waiting for you here, Dr. Chang. Your lecture on the design of steel structures was due to begin at seven. You’re not answering your cell phone, so maybe that means you’re on your way here and are stuck in traffic or something. Anyway, I hope you can find us OK—I know this is your first visit. I’d appreciate a call to let me know the situation, as some of the students are wondering whether to go home.

Questions 74 through 76 refer to the following announcement.[M-Au] Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Before we get off,

can I remind you to keep together as a group—I don’t want to lose anyone this morning. We’ll go at a gentle pace, but please everyone make sure you keep up. Can I also remind you that you are responsible for your own safety, so do take care when crossing the street. The tour will take us through the oldest part of the city, past the world-famous opera house, and several museums. It’s just after ten now, and lunch is

Page 29: Audioscript - Practice the TOEIC Test · 2 Pass The TOEIC Test Advanced Course AUDIOSCRIPT PART 1 – Photographs Improve Your Performance ... The pleasure cruiser is sailing under

booked for one o’clock, so I’m aiming to have you back at your hotel around half past twelve. Remember, the restaurant we’re going to today is just next door. After lunch, you’re free until the opera this evening. I recommend visiting the old castle, and in particular going down to the dungeons. They’re awesome. Some of you might be tired and wish to take it easy, in which case I suggest a relaxing boat tour on the river.

Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following speech.[M-Am] Governor Alonso, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

It is an enormous privilege for me today to be in the company of such talented architects, engineers, designers, and construction workers who have created this wonderful facility. As your state representative and chair of the Assembly Committee on International Trade and Commerce, I know that this award-winning convention center will attract business from all over the country—and from all over the world. What’s more, it will give an enormous economic boost to this city, to its hotels, restaurants, stores, and museums. We’ll shortly go to the roof terrace, where there will be a delicious buffet. I’m sure you’re all eager to see the spectacular views, so may I therefore declare the Adams Convention Center open.

Questions 80 through 82 refer to the following talk.[F-Au] Having looked at the results for the clinical drug trials in North

America, we’ll move on to the next slide now, which shows the outcomes in a number of European countries. As you can see, our volunteers in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany experienced levels of symptom alleviation similar to those of volunteers in North America, and the patient satisfaction figures are also similar. You might find the data for Spain rather alarming. Unfortunately we found it very difficult to recruit volunteers there, so the success rates and satisfaction figures are based on a small sample, and although they are very low, we shouldn’t read too much into them. In fact, we still plan to push ahead with our program in Spain, despite these results.

Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following advertisement.[M-Am] If you’ve been thinking of buying a new car, then head

Questions 86 through 88 refer to the following announcement.[M-Br] And on to our next item. A masterpiece by one of the

eighteenth century’s greatest cabinetmakers, this beautiful carved Sheppledale chair epitomizes luxury, elegance, and fine taste. It must have graced the dining table of one of the finest houses in England. Look at the deep, rich color of the wood—it’s the finest mahogany, as you’d expect. It’s got the craftsman’s trademark carvings on the back and legs. Similar pieces sell for between two and three thousand dollars, but I expect this one to go for four or five thousand given its excellent condition and the curvature of the back. Sheppledale’s furniture is usually more angular than this, making this a very rare treasure indeed. Who will start the bidding? Do I hear three thousand? Thank you, madam.

Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following talk.[F-Am] Like the other people you’ve interviewed on your weather

news program this week, I’m hoping that we don’t get the bitterly cold weather we had a while back. After that big freeze my orange and grapefruit trees didn’t produce any fruit for two years. Now the fruit on the trees is looking OK, but that could change if it doesn’t warm up today or tomorrow. One heavy frost and we’ll lose the crop. I’m worried, of course, because this is my livelihood and a big contribution to our income. We can’t live on my husband’s pension. But it’s not just us who’ll suffer. If crops in this area are ruined, then that means that citrus fruits will be scarce. Therefore they’ll cost more in stores and at farmers’ markets.

Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following announcement.[M-Cn] Ladies and gentlemen, staff and customers of Lucky’s

Mini-mart. I have a very important announcement to make. Today is the birthday of Nancy Vettel, our longest-serving employee. Nancy is 80 years old today, although when you see Nancy—and she’s the lady on the checkout that’s festooned with flowers and balloons this afternoon—you’ll find that very difficult to believe. Nancy has been working in this supermarket for over 50 years. She started with us when her children were at school, and she’s now a great-grandmother, but I’m pleased to say she’s still here three mornings a week, working hard and helping customers find whatever they need. I’m sure you’d like to join the management in wishing Nancy a happy birthday. I hope you’ll also join in with all our staff now as we give a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” for Nancy.

Questions 95 through 97 refer to the following news report.[F-Am] Those were the business headlines. Let’s turn now to

the arts. The California-based troupe Skills and Thrills, known across the world for its zany clowns and daredevil acrobats, is planning to lay off 200 workers at the end of the month. This number includes both performers and office staff. The announcement was made at a press conference yesterday. We approached the company for a statement, but unfortunately no spokesperson was available. Until recently Skills and Thrills was a runaway financial and artistic success—with tickets sold out months in advance. However, its latest show, “Dancing in Space,” which was expected to run for at least three years, closed after just two months following poor box-office sales. Critics say that the company had started to take its audiences for granted, with each production simply offering variations on the same acts.

Questions 98 through 100 refer to the following talk.[F-Au] Let me give an outline of the course, so you all know what

to expect. The business school has a ten-week semester, so the last class will be in mid-December. There’ll be no lecture in week 5, as that’s fall break. We’ll start off today with an introduction to the course, and a look at the dominant theories of marketing. Before reading week we’ll cover consumer behavior, marketing research, and logistics. When we come back after fall break we will look at strategic marketing, and then in subsequent weeks international marketing, internet marketing, and retail management, respectively. The last lecture, in week 10 of the semester, will be devoted to business ethics. There’s no exam for this course. Instead you’ll do one group assignment and one individual piece of written work. I’ll give you more information about both those assignments in a couple of weeks’ time.
