This means that the indie genre can include many types of music, as well as hybrid genres. There is therefore a wide range of ways that artists are able to express themselves through their music, which can often lead to much more freedom in what they are able to communicate to their audience. This could lead the audience to be more open, understanding and flexible around what type of music they listen to.

Because artists are able to create the music which they most associate with without the pressure to conform to a specific genre, it means that they are able to create an individual style and persona for themselves. This can also help to connect to an audience because people will associate with the artist or appreciate that they have their own brand, and the artist is likely to stick to that. If the artist then becomes successful and they continue to have their uniqueness, the audience is likely to appreciate that, and may begin to form their own style.

Many indie musicians often have small audiences and can be seen as ‘undiscovered', this could create a bond with any budding musicians as they would relate and feel connected to those they have found. This can create a level ground between the audience and the creators as the consumers of indie music may also create music themselves

Well known musicians of this genre are often people that have grown from nothing which can mostly be seen through their older music. This can encourage their 'prosumer' audience to keep creating music and can give the audience something to aspire to become.
