Jan Lander, 37, is about six weeks into her fitnessprogram, and she’s starting to notice a difference in the
way she works out.“Some of the weights are getting
easier,” Jan said. “I have to add a few pounds.”
According to her personal trainer, Amy Logan of Courthouse AthleticClub, it is typical to hit a point in your routine where it becomes noticeably easier. What to do then? Well, increase
the intensity, of course. “You’re just about at that point in your program where even if you don’t see the results, you can feel them,” Amy said. “We’re starting to kick up thecardio now and getting moreaggressive on the nutrition side.”
Adding more intense full- body exercises like lunges, dips, chest and back exercises helpskeep Jan on her toes and keepsthe pounds dropping.
Since her last weigh-in a few
weeks ago, Jan lost about twopounds and a half inch aroundher waist, a notable differencefor such a short time span.
Amy is really pleased with Jan’s progress and very proud of her hard work.
“She’s stepping up the intensity from her previous workouts, and she’s doing it so easily! I’m really proud of her,” Amy said.
Not only is Jan noticing that workouts are getting easier, but she can tell the difference
when she keeps her mind focused. Amy encourages Jan to focus andexplains the muscles behind eachmotion.
“Put your mind in those areas that you’re working,”
Amy advised. “You should be crystal clear on what muscles you’re using in an exercise in order to get resultsand perform the motion properly. “
By thinking carefully about what muscle groups areengaged, Jan does notice that she gets a better workout.
“When I do think about it, I can feel it. It’s the simple little things like that,”
Jan said. Because this is the point in the
routine-just when one’s body is getting used to working hard-when it’s easy tohit a weight-loss plateau, this is exactly the point when Amy wants to kick up
Jan’s focus on proper nutrition.“I think the key for Jan
is going to be her diet,” Amy said.
They will cut downunnecessary, refined carbsto boost Jan’s weight loss.
“Carbs aren’t bad, but if you think about what
nature put out there-fruit, vegetables, potatoes-they’rebeautiful. We eat pasta, cereal,
crackers, far from carbs in their natural form,” Amy said. “We’realso going to make sure Jan’s getting protein in three times a day.”
With the proper nutrition building blocks in place, Jan’s weight loss is sure tocontinue. One thing is for sure, that Jan and Amy work hard, but they keep the training sessions light-hearted
with lots of laughter.“The fun takes the edge off the pain,” Amy said.Like Jan, Gunter Vogtmann is stabilizing in his fitness
program. Given his age (81), he and his trainer, Rich
Smith of Courthouse Athletic Club, have taken it pretty slow. Rich carefully increases Gunter’s range of motionand workload as he sees him improving. And they areseeing great results!
Gunter’s stamina has improved, his heart-rate remainssteady and his weight is redistributing. His dedication isalready paying off.
“I’m walking better,” Gunter said happily.Rich is gradually boosting Gunter’s workouts with
weights and more intense exercises. “We’re adding additional strength training without
overburdening him. We’re also trying for more range of motion,” Rich explained.
With the additional exercises, Gunter is working hardand experiencing some of that goodquality muscle soreness that indicatesprogress.
“Some days, I’m aching all over. But I know it’s a good thing,” Gunter said.
Gunter pushes through the pain anddoes great with every increase inintensity and added exercise. Hiscompetitive attitude and dedicationgive him an edge.
“Gunter is tearing it up,” Rich saidproudly. “It’s a slow process, but he’s
really doing a great job witheverything.” Now that he is stepping things up
and seeing an encouraging outcome,Gunter is more determined than ever tocontinue his healthy lifestyle changes
beyond the 13-week competition. Rich encourages him tokeep his long-term goals in mind as well.
“I don’t want this to be a 13-week program, but a lifelong adventure,” Rich said.
With both Jan and Gunter kicking up their programs a notch, they are kicking up the
competition and changing for the
long-term. Check back soon to seehow their journey progresses!
