No Refunds PolicyYour committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.

Membership Renewal 2013-14
Many thanks to those who have already sent me their cheques, having a gentle trickle of forms helps me a lot. I will have forms available at the February & March meetings for those who do not have a computer, please complete the forms as it enables me to check the data we have on you , e.g. phone numbers and e mails, it is surprising how many have changed! Please remember you have to be a full member at a U3A group to be an associate member with us. What this really means is that your TAT (Third Age Trust) fee to national, is paid from your full membership, wherever that may be, that is why the associate membership fee is a reduced amount, as you only pay the TAT fee once per year.
MEMBERSHIP FEES:- . Full membership is £16.00 for the yearAssociate membership, for members who pay their Capitation fee to another U3A -£12.50Postal Membership £11.00. Associate Postal Membership £7.50. Two years ago The capitation fee was raised by £1.00.. We will review the membership fees each year, and try to keep them as low as possible. £16.00 is still cheaper than it was 3 years ago
Please note that whichever membership you choose, you will have full membership of Ashfield U3A
Contact me by e mail or phone, [email protected] or 01623 793447many thanks; Trish Tootell: Membership Secretary

An old man was asked,
"At your ripe old age, what would you prefer to get -
Parkinsons or Alzheimer's?"
The wise one answered,
"Definitely Parkinsons.”
“Better to spill half an ounce of Scotch than to forget where you keep the bottle!"

Horsemeat A woman has been taken into hospital after eating horse meat burgers - Her condition is said to be stable
So they have found a Horse burger in Tesco. What's next,…………. My Lidl pony?
Not entirely sure how supermarkets are going to get over this hurdle.
Waitress in supermarket asked if I wanted anything on my Burger. So I had a £5 each way !
Quarter Pounders: The affordable way to buy your daughter the pony that she's always wanted!
Had some burgers for my tea last night.... I still have a bit between my teeth
Unused HMV vouchers are now being accepted at Supermarkets. Just tell them HMV means 'Horse Meat Voucher'
Supermarkets are now testing all their vegetarian burgers for traces of uniquorn
Anyone want a burger from the supermarket? - Yay or neigh?
"I've just checked the burgers in my freezer...AND THEY'RE OFF!!"
I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse....." I guess Tesco just listened.”
Supermarkets now forced to deny presence of zebra in burgers, as shoppers confuse barcodes for serving suggestions.

Creative Writing Group: Leader Chris Ward 01623 550105
Meets 3rd Wednesday of the Month 1.30pm – 3.30pm at members’ homes, there is no charge.
We are exploring collaborative writing, collaborative writing is where a collection of characters are created and each person takes on the persona of this character and writes only about this character. The group then exchanges their characters story and others make notes so they can adapt their character within the story (much like writing a soap opera). We are writing about a 50th wedding anniversary brought about by the family’s history being traced. It is really an exciting, fun exercise in writing as it allows great creativity and imagination within some set parameters pre-agreed such as where it is set, when it happens, and the date it takes place.Next meeting will be 20th March 2013 – subject: Humorous Writing
Phone 01623 550105 for venue information
Gardening Groups
A new group, Horticulture Forum, has had its first meeting. The group mapped out their programme for the following year: venues and subjects to be researched by the members, and presentations to be given. This means that all group members will contribute, helping extend our knowledge. Topics will cover all those questions to which Martin Fish does not know the answer! We will meet in the homes of members to keep the costs down and meetings may or may not involve the member’s garden. This should enable us to meet throughout the year.As in the past, the group may include visiting speakers in the programme. The group will meet in the morning of the 4th Monday of the month as there is currently a gap to fill at this time. There was a total of around 10 members, so there is room for more if anyone is interested in serious gardening and horticulture in depth, (not garden visits). There will be a signing up sheet at the February meeting - or I can be contacted by telephone 01623 750466 or at [email protected]

Also, please offer to help with the catering at the many events we organise. We always need a few ‘extra hands’ to help at events and meetings.
Please consider helping your committee in any of the above capacities.
Our Latest Interest GroupsNew Garden Visits Group – leaders Pam Sapey and Kathleen Jones
Our idea is that we will visit gardens mainly throughout ‘recognised’ garden visit months – and also any other times of the year during which we know there will be something of interest to see. As well as our own gardens, we can visit local ‘open Gardens’, Municipal gardens, NT gardens and RHS gardens etc. the list is endless and of course we will welcome members’ ides. It is your group, and we welcome your view and your input. Unless we decide to travel a long way, and have sufficient interest to warrant the hire of a minibus or coach, it is intended to use and share cars

SHARED LEARNING PROJECT
We have been fortunate to be offered a shared learning project with Ashfield District Council.
The project is related to the refurbishment of Lindley’s Mill in Sutton and is being funded by lottery heritage funding. It involves the physical refurbishment of the mill and research into the mill and other mills in the area. Our part will be to research the history of Lindley’s mill and the other mills to produce a report which we hope will contribute to a book about mills and milling in the immediate area.We need a group of 8 -10 people who are prepared to commit their help for 9 – 12 months starting in September. We will meet once or twice a month and there will be research to do in between. We will probably meet at one of the local libraries or the Ashwood centre and the project will involve the use of computers . Training will be provided if necessary on the research techniques by Denis Hill of ADC.
If you are interested please see Lynne Jackson ( [email protected]) orTrish Tootell ([email protected]) for more information or to add your name to the list.
Committee meeting. At this month’s committee meeting, the members of the committee decided to give up cake for Lent. (Due to the person, who should have provided the cake, forgetting to bring it)
A cow walks into a bar. Barman says 'why the long face?' Cow says 'Illegal ingredients, coming over here stealing our jobs!'
I hear the smaller version of those supermarket burgers make great horse d'oeuvres.
These Tesco burger jokes are going on a bit. Talk about flogging a dead.. NO! NO NO NO!
I said to the Mrs ; “These burgers have given me terrible trots”
To beef or not to beef. That is equestrian
Meat pies with no added Shergar
“The mafia are getting lazy – people are finding Findus Beef Lasagnes in their beds!!”

Friendly GardenersThis group will re-commence in April, led by Marjorie Woolham
