Personal Statement

My interest in the medical field goes back to after graduation from high-school. It was when I enrolled into a nursing assistant program. I enjoyed working in the medical field, learning all the terminology and the medical jargon. It was there I learned about mental illness and patient care, caring for the generic and so much more. Once I completed the program I worked in the medical field for about ten years total. Then I enrolled in college to obtain an Associate Degree in Accounting/Business Administration. With this degree it allowed me to work as an account payable and inventory clerk. It was this position that encourages me to attend college to obtain a bachelor degree in Business Administrative/Management to which I didn’t complete. There was a desire to accomplish more? When I decided to attend college again I had no idea of what my interest was or the field. Since I had previously attend college and obtained the hours but not the degree. This time there were set goals of what I was seeking to accomplish. There were so many areas to choose from such as medical field, criminal justice field, management. Choosing a field was more challenging than I thought.

I wanted a field that I could apply skills, experience and knowledge in which I had obtain from past experiences of the various jobs. Most of my previous work experiences included working with patients in the following areas; assisted living, hospital, mental retardation and nursing homes. So therefore there was one general area I knew I wanted to work, that was with people is some aspect but what. Then take into consideration of the experience of administrative, management, customer service.

This was becoming more of changing a career than to obtain a degree. Was I really at a crossroad of wanting to make a change? There was so much to really take into this goal that I had not put in place. I found my self taking the time to research with a list of long-term goals verse short-term. What would be in-store once I had a general idea of what it was seeking to accomplish? Then one day I received a brochure in the mail, it listed all the possibilities of choosing a fulfilling career. The one career that caught my interest was clinical nurse psychologist; it had both the medical aspect as well as the administrative. Did I have what this career encounter, how much of my personal experience would I be able to use? Would my pervious college classes transfer? There was so many question and no answers. Once I got over the pro and cons. I decided to call and meet with an advisor, there all of question was answer and I begin my journey.

Since I’m an undergraduate and getting closer to graduation, I have been setting goal to obtain a master degree either in forensic science or nursing. And obtain certification in various fields of family counseling, drug and alcohol abuse, pain medication abuse. Once after completion of the degree in the master program, my studies will be toward a doctoral degree. To which it will allow me to practice as well as be an instructor in a college.

Reflection

• I have always had the desire of a life long strategy to improve myself as much as possible. That was the reason I decided to go back to school again after going attending college four years and missed getting my bachelor degree the first time. I have found it to be very satisfying to achieve a life long balance of happiness and success in my life. When I decided to challenge myself with attending college again I had to really make sure it was going to become a career change in the future.

• When I enrolled in college in the summer of last year, there was indeed some consideration to take in. All my children were leaving the nest and was I going to be okay. And the other was why do I want to go to college and what did I wanted to study? I have come along way both in my personal and professional life. Many of my accomplishments in my life I attribute to my love for growth and challenges. It has helped me to set principles in my life that are close to my heart.

• The biggest obstacle was the online classes, believe me it was my weakness, after working on an computer daily on my job, it was almost an act of congress to wanted to sit again at home on the computer. I had to develop a plan to make myself set a schedule to work on the computer and a time to relax. I even bought a nook so that I could read the assignments and prepare my assignments. Once I developed a plan I was able to execute the assignments.

• My strength came from the fulfillment I received from research of a particular topic and the grade. This allowed me to show that I had the potential to accomplish those tasks set out before me. It allowed me to think outside of the box on the discussion question and responses to others. Learning new information is something we do everyday, but really don’t know the impact it has on us in accomplish goals. I found it was really easier for me to learn something that was interesting and challenging. This has been a great opportunity for me to find my overall ability to put my goals into action. Each assignment gave me the opportunity to recognize different aspect of life.

Research

• Psychology Today on the Death Penalty•  • Much of the current controversy about the death penalty focuses on the circumstances where it

should be applied, and on its unequal application among racial and socioeconomic classes. About 52% of death row inmates are Black or other minority, versus 17% in the general population. Over 98% of death row inmates are male. It indicates that executions are a deterrent against future murders have been the subject of criticism. The death penalty is becoming a controversy because it’s a financial burden on taxpayers.

• The argument is that the death penalty is a barbaric act against values? Whose value are we speaking of the victim or the criminal? When interviewing Michelle Greer, via telephone these were the arguing questions.

• Michelle, “How would justify your view toward the death penalty? Well Georgia, it isn’t hard to say that I’m for the death penalty, no matter if it’s a firing squad, electric chair, gas chamber, lethal injection or hanging.

• Michelle, you made some strong points, but what about the Bill of Rights, which states it is barbaric and violates the “cruel and unusual”. Wait a minute do think that it should be fair that they get an option to the way they should die, No! I strongly disagree, and the reason is the victim did not get that right, so why should they. Okay.

• Michelle, “It seems that when we speak about rights, such as the 8th and 5th Amendment of the U. S. Constitution prevents the use of “cruel and unusual punishment”. Maybe you misunderstood how strongly I feel for the death penalty, It gives closures to families who has endured so much pain for the lose of a love one; It’s justice served;

• See Georgia, as I see it this only show that the justice system shows more sympathy for the criminals than it does victims. I honestly don’t feel that is right, why they should be given the opportunity to do a little time and then parole out to committee another crime. No, with so much modern technology with DNA testing we can get results quicker, why some 10 to 30 years wait.

• Well upon finishing the interview, Michelle made some very strong points and some arguments; the views that which I support on the death penalty is also very much the same.

• As I took the time to reflect back on the question of the “Death Penalty, it was interesting to know that there are other places that indeed support the death penalty as you can see below.

My Future in Learning

I plan on attending college until I have obtained my PhD in Psychology I haven’t quite decided in the general area but I’m interested in the mental health area. I have learned that in society we are challenge with many changes. And some of those changes bring about situation that somehow can not be adapted too. Since I have been in college and have had the opportunity to learn of those causes and affect that individual is challenge with I would love to assist them in coping with the unpredicted changes. And on a personal level I have had first had of dealing with mental disorder within my own family. I would like to understand the behavioral aspect of this as well and find a better way of treating this disorder.
