Nagano Prefecture is one of Japan’s top destinations, brimming with attractions. From its majestic nature transforming with each season, to its mouthwatering local delicacies and its historical hot springs, there are innumerable charms waiting to be discovered by the traveler. Join us in a journey around Nagano with Matsumoto as our base.
Running parallel to the Kiso River, crossing steep ridges and passing through deep valleys and high cliffs reaching the feet of the mountains is the Kiso Road. Hiking it leisurely we will get to know three post towns: Narai, Tsumago and Magome.

KisojiIn the Edo period (1603–1867), Nakasendo was one of the five ma-jor arteries connecting Edo, the shoguns’ city to the Imperial Capital, Kyoto; because it passed through Kiso, Nakasendo was also known as the “Kisoji” or “Kiso Road.” At the time, the Tokaido and the Nakasendo were the two main routes linking the two cities. Nakasendo was much more popular among women. It was also used by princess Kazunomiya Chikako for her bridal procession to Edo to marry the 14th Tokugawa shogun, Iemochi as well as for the “O-chatsubo Dochu” the procession

Narai-juku (present day Nagano Prefecture’s Shiojiri City), was famous during the Edo Period as the post town/station “Narai Senken” (i.e. “1,000 buildings in Narai”). It is structured around a main street of stores and houses stretching for about 1 km (0.6 mi) and features some Important Cultural properties among which are the Wholesalers’ Archives, the Nakamura Residence and the Narakawa Museum of History and Folklore.

During the Edo Period, the Tokuriya building served as the town’s secondary inn (or “waki-honjin”). In later times, literary greats like Shimazaki Toson and Masaoka Shiki also stayed here in several occasions. Nowadays, it is used as a restaurant with a library.
To the side of the Hachiman Jinja Shrine, 200 stone statues of the Buddhist divine entities Jizo and Kannon.
The building housing Cafe Miyama used to be the office of a lumber yard; among its dishes is a mild curry with a recipe going back 100 years.

Tsumago-juku (present day Nagano Prefecture’s Nagiso Town) is Japan’s first Nationally Designated Architectural Preservation Site and its scenery has remained virtually unchanged since the Edo Period.
Magome-juku (present day Nakatsugawa City’s Magome area, Gifu Prefecture) features two rows of old houses along a street going down the slope of a hill. The town is also known as the birthplace of noted author Shimazaki Toson (1872–1943) and as the stage of his most famous novel “Before the Dawn.”

KISO/KAMIKOCHI/MATSUMOTO
Kamikochi is a high mountain valley at an elevation of 1,500 m (4,921 ft), surrounded by some of the tallest peaks the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains): Mt. Hotakadake, Mt. Yakedake and Mt. Kasumizawadake. Being the entrance to the Northern Alps it is a popular destination among mountaineers and its appeal became known to the world from the 1896 book “Mountaineering and Exploration in the Japanese Alps” by British mission-ary and mount-climber Walter Weston.
Take long strolls in the pristine nature and enjoy the virgin forests, the clear waters of the Azusa River and the small and larger lakes dotting the landscape. One of the recommended courses is to get off the bus at Lake Taisho and go around Taisho Pond, Tashiro Pond and towards the Kappa Bridge (1–2 hours).
One of Japan’s most characteristic mountain scenic spots, a mountain range with peaks higher than 3,000 m (9,842 ft) looms before your eyes.

The Northern Alps’ highest peak, Mt. Okuhotaka (3,190 m/10,465 ft) as well as the surrounding peaks – Mt. Maehotaka (3,090 m/10,137 ft), Mt. Kitahotaka (3,100 m/10,170 ft) and Mt. Nishihotaka (2,909 m/ 9,543 ft) make up the Hotaka Mountain Range.

2,455 m (8,054 ft) high, the Northern Alps’ only active volcano right on the border of Nagano Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture, Mt. Yakedake.
Compared to Matsumoto (whose elevation is at 600 m/1,968 ft) the average tempera-ture in Kamikochi is about 5–10 degrees C lower so in early spring and early autumn temperatures going below zero are quite common; even in summer, midday tempera-tures go below 10 degrees C so dressing well is highly recommended!

The castle’s jet-black keep, a National Treasure of Japan, was built in 1593–1594. Reflecting the time it was built, the late Warring States Period, the castle is lacking any ornate decorations and emits an air of coarseness and severity.
Planned around the castle, the city of Matsumoto is a perfect ex-ample of a castle town. With the area filled with springs, there were many wells in Matsumoto, some of which still remain until today: discovering them as well as the old white-walled storehouses (like
those in Nakamachi and Nawate streets) makes for some great walking tours.

Lots of things to do in Nagano’s Matsumoto City – this is a place where you want to take your time, walk around and enjoy everything at a relaxed pace. But there are some things you will definitely need in order to fully enjoy your trip so let’s hit the Don Quijote store in Minami Matsumoto to get them.
Getting to the shop is also very easy. Simply disembark one stop after Matsumoto Station. If you are touring the town, make sure to stop by here!
Whether strolling around Kamikochi or visiting hot springs, you will need a towel, a change of clothes or a thermos – or a couple of things that you hadn’t planned for. But you don’t need to worry: Don Quijote Minami Matsumoto offers an abundance of items to help the traveler in distress.
Moving around demands snacks. From candy of any shape, color and taste to stuff that will boost your energy, the variety you will find here is staggering; just seeing them stacked tower-like is reason alone to visit! And if you’re look-ing for some souvenirs, try the selection of local sake labels.
We feel confident in saying that we provide the best combination of price and variety of items. We particularly recommend our “Passion + Price” brand, a line of products sponsored by our company and offering good quality at very reasonable prices.
Travel around Hida CityThe city of Hida, in which Hida-Furukawa is located, is known for its quaint townscape, and as an innermost sanctum of Takayama. The city is situated, geographically speaking, approximately at the center of the Japanese archipelago, and at the northernmost part of the Gifu Prefecture. Together with Takayama and Shirakawa-
go, Hida is one of the most famous tourist sites in Japan, which has long been cherished by Japanese people. Presented here are this city’s charming attractions which should make you feel an urge to visit the city. Why don’t you come to visit the city to soak up the enchanting atmosphere emanating from the old townscape?
Traveling just a little bit toward the North-East from the Hida-Furukawa Station, you can reach the town of Kamioka. How about strolling through Kamioka’s quaint traditional townscape on a guided tour? You will find many interesting spots here for taking pictures such as the tranquil Fujinami Bridge painted in red, and the time-worn road-side signs. You should certainly not miss riding the “Gattan-Go” or “Rail Mountain Bike” which is a pair of bicycles attached together and mounted on a rail-way by means of a frame. Riding this “bike,” you will experience a curious sensation of locomotive sounds and rhythms unique to railway traveling. With the crystal-clear river running along the railway in view, and fresh clean air in your lung, both your body and mind will become reinvigorated! Walking a little further away, you can get to Kamioka Castle, from which you can command a panoramic view of the old-fash-ioned townscape as a whole. Adjunct to the castle is a renovated old traditional farm-house, transported there to house the local folk museum. Getting acquainted with the local history there should also be an interesting diversion in your trip.

After enjoying your walk through the town, let’s refresh your slightly ex-hausted body by relaxing in a lodging that would make you soak up an atmosphere of a good old Japanese countryside. In Hida, accommodation is available in more-than 100-year-old farmhouses, that are renovated and converted into inns and guesthouses. Immersed in a “retro” space and looking over the surrounding pastoral landscape, let’s relax and recapture your experiences of the day in Hida. It would also be interesting for you to enjoy the evening in Hida by degusting exquisite local dishes and sipping a cup of locally brewed sake.
How about getting up a little bit earlier next morning to have a hands-on experience with the local traditional craftsmanship as a nice finale to your trip? In Hida, you can personally try out the more-than-400-year-old wooden joint technique called the “Chidori goshi” method, or the equally long-lasting landscaping technique for maintaining beauti-ful Japanese gardens. Clad in real traditional gardener’s attire, you can trim trees, or make your own woodcraft object using the Chidori goshi method. Once you have tried out the supreme craftsmanship unique to the region by yourself, you should certainly become captivated by Hida.

On April 4, 2016, “Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal” is finally here. The termi-nal for the highway bus lines connecting Tokyo to various regions of Japan. The new center brings together all the terminals pre-viously scattered around Shinjuku Station, making direct transfer from the station to them a breeze. Together with the new bus terminal, The Tokyo Tourist Information Center has also opened there.
Focusing mainly on female customers, the new shopping facility NEWoMan is re-plete with exquisite fashion items as well as a variety of other offers. LE PAIN de Joël Robuchon (bakery), Blue Bottle Coffee (café), TORAYA CAFÉ ・ AN STAND produced by TORAYA (maker of tradi-tional Japanese confections), and others are worth visiting.
Hordes of visitors from Japan and abroad are roaming its streets shopping and sightsee-ing in Shinjuku! Even though the area has gone through several transformations, 2016 has brought some particularly big changes, especially when it comes to the New South Exit area of Shinjuku Station, featuring a new bus terminal with commercial and tourist infor-mation venues that are drawing more and more attention with each passing day.

In this area, BEAMS JAPAN opened on April 28, a shop which selects a variety of goods under the theme of “Japan” from all over Japan, brought to this all-in-one location, for your conve-nience. Shinjuku Wald 9, a theater complex showing digital cin-emas, will screen the latest film of ONE PIECE, “ONE PIECE FILM GOLD” from July 23 to August 5. The film is available with subtitles in English and Chinese. (For details, see p.16)
Right in the heart of Shinjuku “The city that never sleeps” – an apt name for Kabukicho, Tokyo’s top enter-tainment district. It has earned the right to be called a “City of the Night.”
A life-sized Godzilla peeking from Shinjuku Toho Building is a new landmark of Shinjuku. Dance shows by cute dancers and huge robots at Robot Restaurant are also an exciting experience. (For details, see p.39) Another Kabukicho attraction that has been gaining in popularity since its opening 2015 autumn is the Samurai Museum. Particularly appealing to visitors from overseas, it offers lessons in the history of the samurai (warriors) and also the chance to get your picture taken in their kabuto hel-mets and katana swords. When you are a little tired of the bustle of the town, go to Hanazono Shrine, an oa-sis in the metropolis.
Shinjuku Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho are two of Shinjuku’s drinking areas featuring an enor-mous number of tiny shops tightly packed next to each other. Both areas are said to have evolved from the drink and food stalls that sprang up around Shinjuku Station after the devastation of WWII, which means that they have a rich history of over 60 years.

ment Store → Hanazono Shrine → Samurai Museum → Golden Gai
Shinjuku is filled to the brim with people, and
this large station is almost always going to
be chock full with crowds gathered to enjoy
the many sights that are on offer here. The New South Exit is one to take note
of, as it has a brand new NEWoMan complex built directly adjacent here. One
cannot go to Shinjuku and miss out on visiting the Shinjuku Gyoen National
Garden, featuring different styles of garden seamlessly blended together to
create a beautiful and harmonious place.
When it is about time for lunch, you can head over to Shinjuku-sanchome
Station. There is direct access to the Isetan mall where you can enjoy all man-
ner of foods from local to international. Hanazono Shrine, a quaint little shrine
but beautiful in its own right, is opportunely close to the famous Kabukicho
area known as Tokyo’s biggest red light district. Those who find little interest
in the more adult scene may still find
hidden gems nestled in the area, for ex-
ample, the Samurai Museum Shinjuku.
Should it be late by the time
you have done all the sightseeing in
Shinjuku, then you can head over to the
Golden Gai where it famously crams all
manner of bars together, mixing differ-
ent themes to entice all manner of cus-
tomers to have a drink and meet new
people, which would be a fantastic way
to round off your Shinjuku experience.

Bon-odori has a 500-year history and is one of Japan’s typical folk performing arts that people still enjoy today. It is considered to have two origins: one derives from Buddhism and the other is from a custom from before the time that Buddhism took root in Japan of praying for the repose of souls and commemorating of ancestral spirits and welcoming them for a brief return to this world.
Most Bon-odori festivals are open to everyone, so let’s join in a casual manner! Moreover, visiting and seeing Bon-odori in differ-ent parts of the country, which have their own local variations, is sure to be enjoyable too.
Bon-odori dance is one of the signature features of summer in Japan. As many as 10 million people may join in the circles and rows of the dances across the country in one summer season. Why not experience the uplifting feeling of festivals, the excitement of dancing, and the groove of dance music?

“Bandai” is the name of this area, home to Mt. Bandai, and Atami comes from Atami Onsen in Shizuoka Prefecture, the hometown of Ito Sukenaga, a lord of this area. He was a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199), the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, and became the lord here after the Oshu War (1189). Though the area is far from the sea and nestled in mountains, the place was named “Atami,” meaning “hot sea,” which indicates hot springs were already discovered like those of famous Atami Onsen in Shizuoka.
This hot spring has a legend. There was a beautiful girl named Hagihime in Kyoto about 800 years ago, who suffered from an incurable disease. One day, she received a prophecy from Cetaka (Fudo Myoo) that she would recover from her illness if she went northeast and soaked in a sacred hot spring on the riverside of the 500th river from Kyoto. She started to head for the northeast and finally arrived at Bandai Atami Onsen, overcoming a lot of obstacles along the way. Thanks to the water, her illness fully recovered. According to this legend, the hot springs are renowned as a “beauty hot springs” and Hagihime Matsuri festival is held every August. The name of the Ioi River, which means the 500th river, is also from this legend.
For sightseeing, visit Nihon Kimono Bunka Museum, where kimonos from the 17th to early 20th centuries are on display. Roughly situated in the middle of Fukushima Prefecture, the location is convenient to visit other sightseeing places in the prefecture.

Saba no miso-ni was easier than I expected and is good if there is miso and any kind of fish, even fresh water fish. That is the best part of recipe because in my country we only have river or lake fish. (from Kazakhstan)
For the detailed directions, seehttp://www.att-japan.net/en/recipe/dish?code=EK000048
This time the side dish for the saba no miso-ni is shira-ae (mashed tofu salad). For the shira-ae recipe, see http://www.att-japan.net/en/recipe/dish?code=EK000049
Cooking Directions1. Make several shallow cuts, about 1 cm apart, on the skin of the mack-
erel. Dip the fillet into boiling water for one second to slightly cook
the surface. Remove and soak in another bowl filled with iced water
until it is chilled. Remove and gently dry with paper towels.
Quarter the eggplant lengthwise into 4 strips. With a knife, make v-
shaped notches on the cap of the shiitake mushroom to form a cross.
Peel and slice the ginger.
2. Put all (A) ingredients into a pot and bring to a boil. Add the mackerel,
eggplant and shiitake mushroom and let simmer over low heat for
about 5 minutes. Skim off the foam several times while cooking.
3. Put (B) seasonings in a small bowl and add 3 or 4 tablespoons of liq-
uid from the pot with the fish and mix well until the miso has dis-
solved. Add it to the pot along with the sliced ginger.
4. Poke 4 or 5 small holes into a piece of kitchen parer, cover the fish
with it, and simmer over low heat for about 2 minutes.
5. Remove from the heat when sauce has thickened. Sprinkle with the
chopped green onion and serve.

Thank you!
Chef Ito has much pride in Japanese cuisine, and I felt his passion! It was my f ir st time to make a Japanese dish and I was surprised it tasted so delicious! Easy recipe, easy steps, must try! (from China)
Chef’s Advice・ Parboiling the mackerel reduces
the unwanted fish aroma. ・To keep the flavor of the miso, do
not overcook.

Rail 鐵路
Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2 hours 30 minutes on the fastest line.

Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than travel-ing by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would rec-ommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.
Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Getting Around in Tokyo / 東京的交通
In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient ac-cessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.
在東京,大阪等大都市的交通系統被充分的整備,如果使用電
車或是地下鐵的話可到達任何地方,如果不想浪費為了購買車

Transportation Cards/Useful Tickets 划算的交通卡
If planning to stay in Japan for a longer period why not try using IC cards? (500 yen deposit returned when returning the card) Simply touch the card on a rectangular pad beside the ticket gate and the fare used is automatically deducted from
the value of the card. In Tokyo the cards are known as Suica or PASMO and are accepted on JR lines, subways and most other railways and buses.
Tokyo One-Day Free Ticket (Tokyo Furii Kippu) (東京フリーきっぷ)is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 cities), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,590 yen.
Tokyo Subway Ticket is available for use on Tokyo Metro and Toei Metro subway lines. Prices for adults are 800 yen (1 day), 1,200 yen (2 days), and 1,500 yen (3 days).
JR TOKYO Wide Pass is valid for three days and good for unlim-ited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen and express trains in the Kanto area. The service is now ex-tended to Echigo-Yuzawa Station and GALA Yuzawa Station. Prices are 10,000 yen (Adults), and 5,000 yen (Children).
In the Kansai (Osaka) area ICOCA or PiTaPa is available IC cards similar to Suica / PASMO.
Kansai Area Pass is valid for unlimited travel using ordinary non-reserved seats of JR-WEST local and rapid trains in the defined “Free Area.” Prices for adults are 2,300 yen (1-day), 4,500 yen (2-days), 5,500 yen (3-days), and 6,500 yen (4-days) when purchasing in Japan. When purchasing in other countries, prices are 2,200 yen (1-day), 4,300 yen (2-days), 5,300 yen (3-days), and 6,300 yen (4-days).

You’ve finally made it to the hot spring. But how do you go about making use of it? Above all, you should never forget to observe the manners and etiquette needed throughout. Here are some important rules to guide you through your first onsen experience - a primer to the laws of the onsen:
1 First of all you will have to completely undress. Clothes are to be taken off in the dressing room (known as the datsui-jo in
Japanese). Other than your birthday suit, you may bring one small towel or washcloth to the bathing area for washing with. Do not make the mistake of changing into and going in your bathing suit! It is not allowed.
2 Once in the bathing area, rinse off with hot water before getting into the onsen. At some places there will be a stone
tub by the entrance, at others you may be able to wash with soap, bucket and using a tap, and at other you will have to take the water directly from the onsen itself (In Japanese this is called kakeh-yu). Kakeh-yu can be done with a small bowl or bucket (sometimes with a handle). Hot water is drawn from the tub or tap and poured over the entire body to rinse thoroughly. This is considered one of the most important points of onsen manners.
3 After you have completely rinsed, it’s time to get into the hot tub. It’s best to get in slowly at first. Get in slowly up to your
knees, then up to your waist, followed by chest, then neck. In doing so your body will slowly get used to the water temperature. Do not put the towel into the water. You may see people fold and put it on their heads, now you know why - it doesn’t belong in the water. You may also put it on the side of the tub.
4 One dip is usually no more than 10 minutes. As there are mineral elements in the water, longer exposure is not only
relaxing, but allows the body to soak up more of those minerals. Getting in at least 2 to 3 times a day is reasonable.
5 Where tap and washing stalls are available, switching from wash stall to tub and back is up to you. Do so at will. Never
bring the soap or suds into the tub!
6 Some hot springs provide more than one tub, such as an open-air bath (rotenburo). Switching from bath to bath may
also be done freely.
7 When your body is hot and you are totally relaxed, taking a shower is entirely up to you, although may be a waste of the
onsen’s mineral healing properties. Leaving them to soak in may be better for your skin.
8 Once out of the onsen, dry off with a towel. Taking a nap is effective; bathing in a hotspring takes quite some physical energy.

Location: 1-7-1 Kabukicho Shinjuku Shinjuku-ku Tokyo, JapanCall for Reservation: 03-3200-5500 (English is available)Phone hours: 9:00am-10:00pm Business hours: 3:30pm-11:30pm Web: http://www.shinjuku-robot.com *Making a reservation early is highly recommended as tickets are difficult to get on the day of.
The Robot Restaurant, a recent endeavor to create a fusion between the tra-ditional and modern cultures of Japan, has been operating in Shinjuku's Kabuki-cho district for over two years. Although it's called a restaurant it is functionally an entertainment performance, albeit one where you can have a sushi meal delivered at your table.
The performance itself features the aforementioned robots, along with a medley of mythical creatures, traditional taiko musicians, dancers and clowns, including an impressive final act where all of these performers join the stage together. It's a light-hearted jaunt through the history of Japan and its popular culture, in an intimate stage setting that gives more of a family-run impression than a big Broadway business one.The popcorn offered at regular intervals during intermissions helps to establish this homey atmosphere even further.
Still, the production values on display here are undeniably high, and the large ensemble cast works with a clear sense of unity and professionalism.
Most importantly, they genuinely seem to enjoy performing the show. This one comes recommended for those who want to get up close with the wacky side of the Land of the Rising Sun. The show performs three to four times a day, but with its popularity steadily rising, reservations are recommended.
