Atoms are made of smaller particles.

The middle or nucleus of an atom is made of protons and neutrons.

The outer rings or cloud is made of electrons.

Breaking into atoms

Some matter is made of only one type of atom which are called elements.

Elements

Elements are organized based on their size on the Periodic Table of Elements.

Activity: Look at the periodic table of elements. Find elements that are common in your

everyday life such as items at home or school. Make a list of those elements and what they

are used for. Are some elements more commonly found

than others? Infer why many of the elements are not

“everyday” or common elements.
