This is a drawing of a magnesium atom. It has an atomic number of 12. By looking at the periodic table you know that magnesium has 12 protons and 12 electrons. (This is because the protons and electrons are equal.) The number of neutrons can be found by taking the atomic mass and subtracting the atomic number.
