LEUCIPO DEMOCRITUS

The atomistic philosophy of Leucippus and Democritus could be summarized as:

1.-The atoms are eternal, indivisible, homogeneous and invisible.

2.-The atoms differ in shape and size.

3.-The properties of matter vary grouping of atoms.

EARTH

EMPEDOCLE IV b.C

In the fourth century. BC, Empedocles postulated that

matter consisted of four elements: earth, air, fire and

water

Page 4: Atomic structure

Aristotle subsequently postulated

that matter was made up of those

4 elements but denies the idea

of atom, a fact that was

maintained until 200 years later

in the thinking of mankind.

In 1808, John Dalton

1.-The elements are composed of

tiny, indivisible particles called

atoms and unalterable.

Dalton established a system for

designating each atom so that could

distinguish between different

elements

The electron

commonly represented

by the symbol e, is a

subatomic particle

with a negative

elementary charge

The particle nature of the electron was

demonstrated for the first time with a

Crookes tube. In this illustration, an

electron beam profile projected cross-

shaped target against the tube face

The neutron is a subatomic particle, a

nucleon, no net charge present in the

atomic nucleus of virtually all atoms

except protium.

All bodies are

composed of

Atoms

An atomic bomb is a device that gets a lot of

explosive energy nuclear reactions. Its

operation is based on a nuclear trigger

uncontrolled chain reaction

The electron

was discovered

by JJ Thomson

in 1897 at the

Cavendish

Laboratory at

Cambridge

University,

studying the

behavior of

cathode rays.

The neutron was

first identified

in 1932 by the

British physicist

James Chadwick

Ernest

Rutherford
