We no longer want to watch our favorite programs when they are broadcast. Netflix, YouTube, and online web sites have reprogrammed our habits. Our video consumption habits have changed for good. Underlying all this is the march of technology bringing us inexpensive high density memory chips, scalable 64 bit operating systems, high capacity hard drives, and the simultaneous availability of 1 Gig and 10 Gig Ethernet ports. All these reduced the price of the principal building blocks of VOD servers dramatically. DVEO’s Atlas Media Server II: TELCO is an exemplary product born in the new era. It was created by a group of talented young individuals who started from scratch and have integrated an architecture based on assumptions of low cost memory into an Ubuntu Linux® core, which is tailored for this task only. The Atlas Media Server II: TELCO is an affordable stand alone Linux® based turnkey live and VOD system designed for small to mid size deployments by Telco’s, schools, cruise ships, stadiums and hotels. It is suitable for both streaming live events to many clients or video on demand. It has been load tested and is certified to support 8,000 simultaneous users since it is configured with a10 gig NIC. It ships with dual redundant power supplies. The main function of this and other VOD servers is to keep track of each user and intelligently cache the users’ video segments efficiently in RAM so that each new user pulls video segments from RAM rather than the hard drive. A VOD server then is really a fast video segment data base manager coupled to a fast I/O system. Our system ingests H.264 live streams over IP, then adds wrappers such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, or RTMP, plus subtitles for closed captions or multiple languages. It outputs the live streams and simultaneously stores the streams as VOD files. All content can be encrypted when communicating with a myriad of target devices. The Atlas Media Server also sends videos to STB’s, smart TV’s, iPads, iPhones, and Android based devices in the formats they need. For customers using two or more Atlas Media Servers in different locations, we recommend adding our optional award winning “DOZER” UDP packet recovery technology, with built- in algorithms to alleviate packet loss. Future versions will include bundled middleware, such as a built-in programming guide, network DVR, and players for Android, IOS, Windows and MAC.
